Re: GPS NMEA monitor software for the Pi

Doug,

Google is your friend here. From a search I found this article which is a good start :-

You may have to write some code in Python to get exactly what you want. One of the issues is that there is no common way to put every GPS into NMEA mode. I have some Motorola ones and an some Trimble ones and they all require a different string to be sent to the GPS to put it into NMEA mode. Both have various proprietary modes as well as NMEA.?

Hope this helps,

Have you checked out gpsd yet?

I know it gives the base level of outputs but as for S/N,
I didn't notice that.

Nice thing about gpsd is that it can be accessed by
any other program via TCP. Looking at using it to
provide a basic ntp server for me for when I do not
have Internet access to keep times up to date for
meteor scatter and FSK144/JT usage.

Hello All,
Anyone in the group know of a good GPS receiver software program for monitoring the NMEA data sent by a GPS receiver? I have looked on the net and found some Linux programs that display the position on maps but I have not found anything that will just a simple display of the basic S/N levels, lat/long, etc. Had thought this should be simple but I haven't found any such so far. Thanks...

Re: GPS NMEA monitor software for the Pi

Hi Max, Yes, I can see the ASCII strings on my Pi using Minicom. So I know the NMEA data sentences are there. I just need a linux program to parse the data and put it into a human readable display, something like VisualGPS which works for that horrible OS known as Windows! Thanks, Doug, k4cle

Re: GPS NMEA monitor software for the Pi

The NMEA data just streams as ASCII text, so you should be able to "see" it in a terminal session

For serial number I guess you need to send the GPS a command also simple ASCII.... I have no idea what...

I guess the NMEA command set is defined some where on the www ...

Xastir no offline maps

After a bit a of a struggle? I got APRS working using a USB sound card direwolf, soundmoden and xastir. I have a few questions?
1. how do I find, download and install? maps for xastir for offline use.

2. how to I get ax25? soundmodem, configured in MKiss mode to work remotely as a server so I can use it? like? dirworlf as an agw server for windows PC apps like UISS or APRIS32?

3. what ax25 programing resources out there? Eventually I want to use the Pi as a High altitude balloon flight computer and tracker. I just want get used programming the Pi (python and C++) by? a program to listen for aprs packets? then put the data in a spread sheet. comma-separated values. I wan tdrive around with the pi for grins to survey what it can pick up.

Turns out it was VERY good advice and the source of the problem.? For a ¡°temporary fix¡±; I moved the Pi/TNC-Pi stack away from the radio and antenna feed, AND put a big wrap around choke on the line from the TNC to the radio.? Been in Digi mode for over 36 hours now with NO issues.

A permanent fix will be a smaller choke and a metal case ¨C trip planned to Radio Shack later today,

You have given nothing useful for anyone to form conclusions on.

Apart from the above, if everything works on RX my next step would be to
rule out RF getting into the PSU/Pi.

Re: New Product Announcement: TNC-Black, a version of TNC-Pi for the Beaglebone Black

I've been using an IC-208H on 440MHZ at 9600 Baud for 3 years now as a RMS Packet Gateway.

It has worked flawlessly using a Kantronics 9612 TNC into the 6 pin data jack.

Dire Wolf 1.0 now available.

Dire Wolf is a software "soundcard" modem/TNC and APRS encoder/decoder.???It can be used stand-alone to receive APRS messages, as a digipeater, APRStt gateway, or Internet Gateway (IGate).? ??It can also be used as a virtual TNC for other applications such as?,?,?,?,?,?,?,?, and many others.

It runs on Windows and Linux systems including the Raspberry Pi.

New features in version 1.0 include 9600 baud operation and?new interfaces for operation with software defined radios (SDR) such as??or?.?

The Icom IC-208H has a mini-DIN connector on the back for data, and one of the pins is marked for 9600, although I've never used it.

Good morning!

?

I have a TNC-Pi running APRX and acting as an RX-Only iGate (PROSSR)??? I had it working about a month ago as a Fill-In Digi+iGate; and took the digi down when a higher/better site came online.? Since then, that site has gone offline; and so last nite, I tried to restart my system as a digi.

?

I changed the config file; did apt-get update, ?apt-get upgrade all and a reboot.??? The first time the it tried to transmit; it ¡°hung¡± key down until I pulled the power.????? I tried a few more times, and no config changes seemed to help.? I did discover that a ¡°service stop aprx¡± would release the PTT, but only after about 10 seconds.

?

Later today, I¡¯m going to try rebuilding APRX in case something got messed up in the updates; but was wondering if anyone else has seen this, or has any other suggestions (I¡¯m running as just an iGate right now).

?

Thanks!

Both are good solutions - but what if you had to get a radio today?
What options are there?

Ohio Linux Fest

Hello ALL:

I just wanted to share this link regarding a Linux Fest Oct. 24-26 2014.

"The twelfth annual Ohio LinuxFest will be held October 24-26, 2014, at the Greater Columbus Convention Center in downtown Columbus, Ohio. Hosting authoritative speakers and a large expo, the Ohio LinuxFest welcomes all Free and Open Source Software professionals, enthusiasts, and everyone interested in learning more about Free and Open Source Software."

In addition if anbody is so inclined, the organizers are open for people to give presentations. I'm thinking such a presentation by utilizing the R Pi and other Linux stuff would bea good way to promote amateur radio. See this link for details.
