it, but my granddaughter and myself ?are using Windows 7
on our laptops.

Stan, there is a program called 'xming X Server for Windows' that
will allow you accomplish what John mentioned. You can use it with
putty to ssh in and grab a x11 session. Here is a link to a pdf that
will help you if you choose this route.
As far as your initial question there is some documentation here:
At the bottom of the link you can select the operating system you
are trying to connect from and it will go into further detail.
There is also another video output available on your version of the
pi with use of a 3.5mm four pole plug to three RCA cable.
