Hi Stan, just to kick the discussion off ....is this a firewall problem??

To use the desktop I used xdrp on the Pi?and remote desktop connection from windows pc (see previous posts to the group)

For the commane line interface / terminal, I used SSH with PuTTY on the PC

Both work fine here with W7 but not sure about 8

Stan, like Alan I use xrdp also.
XRDP is much easier to setup then VNC but as Alan said make sure you setup SSH so you can use PuTTY or some other terminal program to remotely administer the Pi.
