To answer your curiosity about how the system works, both the operating system and the Pi-Star software are on the card; the image that you download as a special copy of the operating system that's been set up with the software installed and ready to start up automatically.

Like most computers, a Raspberry Pi has just enough system installed in its firmware to find and load the main operating system from storage - in our case the SD card. This bit in the firmware is called a boot loader, from the nonsensical? idea in an old story of a mountaineer getting up a cliff by grabbing hold of their bootstraps and pulling themselves up into the air.
