Like most computers, a Raspberry Pi has just enough system installed in its firmware to find and load the main operating system from storage - in our case the SD card. This bit in the firmware is called a boot loader, from the nonsensical? idea in an old story of a mountaineer getting up a cliff by grabbing hold of their bootstraps and pulling themselves up into the air.
