In my general collection of stray bits and pieces I found a few sections of an ex-military sectional antenna made of copper plated steel. Two of these plug together to make a 2.5m whip and the bottom end of the larger section has a coarse thread molded onto it, which just happens to fit tightly into the whip socket on the radio, so I've decide to go with that initially as it's a quick and simple solution.
I'll look at making up a tilting base for the whip at a later date.
