FEMA 5 AUXCOMM Winlink Net this Sunday (12 December)

Hello Everyone,
This Sunday, 12 December, is the second Sunday of the month and we will hold the next FEMA Region 5 Winlink Net.? While this net is sponsored by the FEMA Region 5 AUXCOMM group, all ham radio operators and those with SHARES callsigns are encouraged to check in.??

I hope as many stations as possible will check in and do invite others to check in also.

This week's exercise is to send a weather report.? Here's how:

If you have a Winlink account:
1. Start Winlink
2. Start a new Winlink message
3. In the 'To' field, enter W9REL.?
4. On the ribbon menu, click 'Select Template', then from the drop-down list click '+' next to 'Standard Templates'.
5. On the drop-down list, click '+' next to 'Weather Forms', then double click 'Local Weather Report'.? Watch in amazement as a Weather Report form appears before your eyes.
6. Complete the top part of the form.
? 6a. For GPS coordinates, I recommend you don't list the coordinates for your home or work.? Instead find a nearby landmark and list the coordinates for that location.??
7. When you get to the Measurements area, click 'Imperial'.
8. Now for the fun part.? The form asks for several weather parameters.? Here's a tip: Websites like Weather Bug and Accuweather have the information you need to complete the form.? There are others, I'm sure.? If you don't have information for a specific field, leave it blank.
9. Save the message, then Sunday the 12th, send your message.?

If you DO NOT have a Winlink account, what the heck?? This is, after all, a Winlink net.? Starting a Winlink account is free and it's easy to use. Go ahead, you know you want to.
To check in via email:
1. Open your email client.
2. In the 'To' field, enter W9REL@....
? ?2a. On the Subject line enter '//WL2K /R December 12 Check In'.? The //WL2K is mandatory otherwise Winlink will reject your message.
3. Enter the following information (This would be much easier if you had the report form available on Winlink):
? ?3a. Your callsign, name, report date, report time.
? ?3b. Location, GPS coordinates, City, County, State.? I recommend you NOT use your home or work address and coordinates.? Instead use a nearby park, public building, or other landmark.
? ?3c. At a minimum, include the temperature and sky condition.? Enter the current precipitation, if any.? Enter the barometric pressure, wind speed and direction, and any National Weather Service watches or warnings.
4. On Sunday the 12th, send your message to W9REL@...?

Did You Know: When sending a Winlink message via email, you must start the subject line with //WL2K otherwise Winlink will not accept the message.??

Keep healthy and safe and keep good situational awareness

Region 5 AUXCOMM Winlink Net this Sunday

Hello Everyone,
Please pass this on to others who may be interested.

This Sunday (28 November) is the fourth Sunday of the month and time for the next FEMA Region 5 AUXCOMM Winlink Net.? While this net is sponsored by the FEMA Region 5 AUXCOMM group, all ham radio operators and those with SHARES callsigns are encouraged to check in. I want to increase the number of stations checking in on this net so please spread the word!?

For this week's net, I'd like stations to send a Winlink Check In form

If you have a Winlink account:
1. Start Winlink
2. Start a new Winlink message
3. In the 'To' field, enter W9REL.?
4. On the ribbon menu, click 'Select Template', then click 'Standard Templates', then click 'General Forms', then double click 'Winlink Check In'.? VOILA! a check in form will open.
5. Complete the form??
? 5a. In the 'Comments' section, on a single line enter Exercise #2021-27, your grid square, your first name, your callsign, and your state.? Example: Exercise #2021-27, EN52, Skip, W9REL, Wisconsin.? If there is more than one operator at your location, use a separate line for each operator.
6. On Sunday (28 November) send the message to W9REL.

If you DO NOT have a Winlink account, why not?? This is, after all, a Winlink net.? Starting a Winlink account is free and the system is easy to use.??
To check in via email:
1. Open your email client.
2. In the 'To' field, enter W9REL@....
3. Begin the 'Subject' line with //WL2K R/ followed by the message subject.? The //WL2K is required otherwise Winlink will reject the message.? The [space]R/ identifies the precedence of your message as routine.
4. In the message text, enter Exercise #2021-27-, your grid square, your first name, your callsign, and your state.
5. On Sunday send your message.??

I hope you all had a marvelous Thanksgiving and didn't get trampled at the Black Friday Sales!? Our next net will be on 12 December.? For that net, please use the Winlink weather reporting form.? More details later.

Keep healthy and safe and keep good situational awareness

HF conditions, especially NVIS propagation, have been noticeably improved over the past several weeks and we should anticipate that trend going forward, barring solar storms including high speed streams and flares.? Interesting to note that 40 meters has been nicely short practically every day between 10 AM and 4 PM, but it begins to quickly stretch out after 4 PM EDT. ?60 meters, on the other hand, has provided usable conditions during daylight hours, depending on station performance, but it really improves between 5 PM and 9 PM… outside of our net window, unfortunately.?

Subject: Request in response to Hurricane Ida

?Hi Guys,

As managers of the largest central-US Winlink nets and training exercises, we are grateful to you for keeping your participants ‘trained up and tuned up’ as efficient operators. It is important work, and we want you to know the Winlink Team appreciates it deeply.

However, we have noted the traffic levels your operations present to the HF RMS stations that are also important to the Hurricane Ida response. Landfall has just occurred, and it’s likely that this storm will surpass Katrina in it’s impact. We hope not.

SPECIAL REQUEST: We would like to ask you to manage your nets this upcoming week to help minimize the competition for US midwestern, southern and mid-atlantic HF RMS stations on the amateur bands. We would like to be sure these remain as clear as possible for emergency and disaster relief traffic so that EOCs and deployed stations have their best shot at making connections with minimal waiting.

Would you contact your participants (please use regular email) to explain and perhaps present to them a special task that can have them stay off these HF RMS stations for the week of August 29? The use of any other VHF/UHF, telnet, or other modes are fine, and using HF gateways outside the central/southern/mid-atlantic US area should be fine.

We surely appreciate your assistance!

Thanks in advance for this and keep up the great work!

Lor Kutchins, W3QA

Today’s NCS will be Max, KE8DON, from Michigan.?

?

Beginning with today’s net, I’m asking all NCS’s to call for check-ins by state, with each state called one at a time, on each mode. NCS’s, please call the states alphabetically (Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, Wisconsin) and report the state for each station checking in.

?

One other note: 60 meters has not been a good performer for us recently during the daytime hours (understatement) and 40 meters has been generally too long until much later in the day. Both of these conditions make it very important for NCS’s to utilize stations at a distance to make net calls on their behalf and relay any station check-ins back to the NCS. These stations do not need to make their net calls by state.?

?

Poor daytime HF conditions should be anticipated (depressed performance on the sun-facing side of the Earth, especially on lower frequencies, until we get further along in the new sunspot cycle) for the next several months. This also justifies why we always test our digital voice capabilities.
