FEMA 5 AUXCOMM Winlink Net this Sunday (12 December)
Hello Everyone, This Sunday, 12 December, is the second Sunday of the month and we will hold the next FEMA Region 5 Winlink Net.? While this net is sponsored by the FEMA Region 5 AUXCOMM group, all ham radio operators and those with SHARES callsigns are encouraged to check in.?? I hope as many stations as possible will check in and do invite others to check in also. This week's exercise is to send a weather report.? Here's how: If you have a Winlink account: 1. Start Winlink 2. Start a new Winlink message 3. In the 'To' field, enter W9REL.? 4. On the ribbon menu, click 'Select Template', then from the drop-down list click '+' next to 'Standard Templates'. 5. On the drop-down list, click '+' next to 'Weather Forms', then double click 'Local Weather Report'.? Watch in amazement as a Weather Report form appears before your eyes. 6. Complete the top part of the form. ? 6a. For GPS coordinates, I recommend you don't list the coordinates for your home or work.? Instead find a nearby landmark and list the coordinates for that location.?? 7. When you get to the Measurements area, click 'Imperial'. 8. Now for the fun part.? The form asks for several weather parameters.? Here's a tip: Websites like Weather Bug and Accuweather have the information you need to complete the form.? There are others, I'm sure.? If you don't have information for a specific field, leave it blank. 9. Save the message, then Sunday the 12th, send your message.? If you DO NOT have a Winlink account, what the heck?? This is, after all, a Winlink net.? Starting a Winlink account is free and it's easy to use. Go ahead, you know you want to. To check in via email: 1. Open your email client. 2. In the 'To' field, enter W9REL@.... ? ?2a. On the Subject line enter '//WL2K /R December 12 Check In'.? The //WL2K is mandatory otherwise Winlink will reject your message. 3. Enter the following information (This would be much easier if you had the report form available on Winlink): ? ?3a. Your callsign, name, report date, report time. ? ?3b. Location, GPS coordinates, City, County, State.? I recommend you NOT use your home or work address and coordinates.? Instead use a nearby park, public building, or other landmark. ? ?3c. At a minimum, include the temperature and sky condition.? Enter the current precipitation, if any.? Enter the barometric pressure, wind speed and direction, and any National Weather Service watches or warnings. 4. On Sunday the 12th, send your message to W9REL@...? Did You Know: When sending a Winlink message via email, you must start the subject line with //WL2K otherwise Winlink will not accept the message.?? Keep healthy and safe and keep good situational awareness --------------------------- Skip Sharpe? W9REL |
