Region 11 CD

wini18us <[email protected]>

Presidents/Team Coordinators, I need your assistance. As you read in
the mailing you got from Debbie Curtis, Region 11 is planning on
producing a CD featuring the top 5 choruses, top 5 quartets and the
smallchorus champs and mid-size chorus champs. We are hoping that it
will be well received, but to be sure I am asking a favor.

Could you please take an informal hand count of your members to see
how many will be purchasing the CD when it is issued? They will be
$15 per CD.

Please email me with your count by next Friday, February 21, 2003.
Remember, this is just an informal count, not an official order or
anything. Thanks so much................

Fanatix, 2002 Sweet Adelines International Queens
of Harmony

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Los Angeles/San Diego, February 7, 2003 -- In one
way or another, you're all familiar with them.
Perhaps you've heard them during one of their many
appearances across the US. It could be that you saw
them at their special Smithsonian performance. Maybe
you own a copy of their successful CD, Slam Dunk
Barbershop. Certainly, you know about the accolades
including the 2002 Sweet Adelines Championship and the
2003 Sweet Adelines guest-of-honor status. Well, the
next time you see Fanatix, they might look a little
different.

One of the original four, Gerry Papageorge will sadly
be leaving the group to take care of family business
while Bonnie Fedyski, a legendary Barbershopper in her
own right, will be joining the group. Still a
champion quartet, still Fanatix.

"Gerry recently made the very difficult decision to
resign from the quartet based on her need to be home
and take care of her family," comments quartet contact
Darcy Newell. "The four Fanatix talked through
options together and came up with a perfect solution.
We feel very lucky and are excited to announce that we
have found an accomplished replacement with the kind
of passion and skill we've come to count on in our
bass section."

Bonnie Fedyski is a 1995 Queen of Harmony (with
Chicago Fire), Director of Western Lights Chorus in
Chicago and Associate Director of Choral-Aires, also
in the Chicago area.

Gerry will be performing with Fanatix through April
16, 2003. Bonnie is already working with Fanatix and
will join the group for their April 26 Magnolia Chorus
Show (SPEBSQSA) in Jackson, MS.

The New Fanatix quartet is comprised of Connie
Noble, tenor (past
international champion with The 4th Edition and
Savvy and long time tenor
of High Society); Darcy Newell, lead (who
moonlights as a commercial
executive producer); Sandy Shelver, baritone (past
international champion
with High Society); and Bonnie Fedyski, bass (past
international champion
with Chicago Fire). For more information about
Fanatix or to order a CD,
call (909) 869-7639 or visit their website at <A

Commander/Barbershopper Rick Husband

Thought you might be interested in reading this...

Rick Husband had just one other space flight under his belt and he was
already flying as the Commander of the Shuttle Colombia. That¡¯s a rarity.

"I think a lot of it has to do with being in the right place at the right
time, for starters," says Husband, 45, an Air Force colonel from Amarillo,
Texas. The former test pilot was selected as an astronaut in 1994 on his
fourth try.

Space flight had been his lifelong passion, along with singing. Husband, a bar
itone, had barbershop quartet experience and had been singing in church
choirs for years.

Change on Fund for Rich Hasty

Bea Knaapen <[email protected]>

I received a message from Marti Lovejoy that our tax exempt status
prevents us from raising funds for our members -- much as we would
like to do it. Apparently there was a great deal of discussion about
this after 9/11. So I have to retract our offer to raise funds for
Rich and his family.

If anyone would like do something personally, you could send cards of
support and encouragement directly to him. His address is: Rich
Hasty, 725 East Tenaya Way, Fresno, CA 93710.

Again, if nothing else, please keep him and his family in your
prayers! Thanks!

Hi all!

It's time to submit photos for the "2002-03 Year in Review" video that
will
be shown at our Sunday Brunch in Bakersfield in March. This video
will show
the highlights of this past year -- choruses, competing quartets, and
regional happenings.

Here's where I need your help -- or the help from others in your
chorus/quartet. I am looking for 4 or 5 photos from each chorus that
will
give a fun, quick look at what happened to your chorus this year. I'm
looking for candid photos -- I don't need official competition photos
since I
already have all of those. Some ideas: photos of chorus members at a
performance or social event, funny photos from your retreat, or photos
taken
during a regional weekend.

I also plan to have a "Passages" portion on the video -- a tribute to
Region
11 Sweet Adelines we've lost this year. So please send a photo if you
have
someone in your chorus that you'd like to honor.

The goal is to make sure every chorus is represented on the 2002-03
video --
I know that you'll want to be sure that your chorus is included.

I need to receive all photos either by snail mail, or preferably by
e-mail
attachment (.JPG file, please) NO LATER THAN FEBRUARY 1. On all
photos,
please identify those pictured, and on photos sent via snail mail, be
sure
your name is on the photos -- I will return them.

Hope you all have plans to attend the Brunch on Sunday morning after

Fund for Rich Hasty

Bea Knaapen <[email protected]>

Thank you all for the wonderful response to my last update on Rich
Hasty. Rich is at Community Medical Hospital for at least another
week going through physical, occupational and respiratory therapy.
Once they're convinced that he has the support he needs at home,
they'll release him. But he still won't be able to put weight on
either leg for six to eight weeks.

Members of GoldNote Chorus are or have already built a ramp so he can
get in and out of his home with his wheelchair. And Rich and Kristin
are making plans for rearranging their home so he'll be able to
manuever around the house. Things are looking up but it'll still be
a long haul for Rich and Kristin.

I received an email from Alan Gordon asking about a fund for Rich. I
took his suggestion to our Management Team and we decided to set up a
fund for anyone wishing to help Rich and Kristin. We'll handle it
through California Heartland Chorus and get the funds to Rich and
Kristin.

If you would like to contribute to the fund, please send your check
or money order, payable to California Heartland Chorus, to me at:

Bea Knaapen, 4912 N. 7th St., #103, Fresno, CA 93726

Thank you again for your support. Rich and his family all appreciate
your thoughts and prayers.

Jessica Motzkus Update ;-))))))

Great news from happy parents.

The newest info is that Jessica is home now. Once she got over the
bumps of the first 3 days after surgery, her recovery really
snowballed. She looks great and is smiling again, but her chest looks
like she was in a B rated slasher flick! :)

In some ways it's like we have a new little girl. There have been
adjustments for her, and for us. When we first brought her home she
was very wired like on some caffeine rush. Before we couldn't wake
her - now we can't get her to sleep... With her new ticker, she's
getting more oxygen to her system than she's ever had. Her parents
are getting little sleep because of it too. At least it's because
she's doing so well. :)

She'll be on several oral medications for as long as a few months. She
just loves taking them.... (note sarcasm...), but we are happy to
have a kid that turns red when she cries, rather than white and
blue... It's been traumatic for her and it will take time before
she's fully recovered physically and emotionally. She's needed a lot
of extra cuddling for her to feel secure with the world again. That's
been the easy part. Fortunately, we see the healing progress in her
every day.

We remain ever grateful for the prayers and support of so many caring
people.

Rog and Jen

Rich Hasty Update

Bea Knaapen <[email protected]>

This past week has been a very difficult week for Rich Hasty and his
family. Rich underwent two lenghty surgeries one on left pelvis and
broken left femur, and one on his right ankle. On Saturday, Rich was
taken to Community Medical Center of Fresno where he'll go through
rehab for the next two or three weeks and then he'll be going home.
He's not supposed to put weight on either leg for six to eight weeks.

His parents have been staying with his wife, Kristin, and their son,
Matthew. Kristin suffered a broken right collar bone and is mending.
Matthew was not hurt except for a "burn" where the car seat restraint
rubbed against his neck. Poor baby just can't understand why mommy
can't pick him up and where daddy is! But they're adjusting and doing
fine.

GoldNote Chorus and California Heartland Chorus have both pitched in
doing what they can for the family -- from running errands, bringing
food, babysitting --even building a ramp for Rich's return home!
That's what I love about this organization! You're part of a very
large family that's there when you're in need.

Everyone greatly appreciates the kind thoughts, prayers, and support
they've received from the entire SAI/SPEBSQA organizations and the
family sends their thanks. Rich still has a long haul in front of
him. Please keep him in your prayers.

Jessica Motzkus is home and doing well. She was able to leave the
hospital on Thursday. I spoke with Jenny yesterday and she's upbeat
and they are all very happy to have their baby girl home.

Jessica's prognosis couldn't be better. No futher surgery. Complete
recovery. So, say a prayer of thanksgiving. Yippee!

Sonja Faria

Sorry, I sent this directly to Hoosiergal by mistake...wanted it to go to Region 11 members:

Prayers seem to be working well out there. We can use some too, or rather SONJA FARIA, a member of Celebrity City Chorus and lead in quartet QUE SERA, had emergency brain surgery Friday. Prognosis is not what we want to hear. The doctor is pretty sure it (the tumor) was cancerous and they didn't get it all out. Please send love, white light, and all the prayers you can muster to Sonja and her family. Thank you!

Jessica Update: Good News!

Sent to me this morning @ 11:17 am. Keep it up! It's working!

Lynne Wong

It's Monday morning. It was a rather bumpy road the last few days,
but the Docs feel like Jessica should be OK now. One said, "The grey
hair producing days should be over." But for those that know me, this
news came waaaay too late... :)

I was told one of her many medications is 10 times stronger than
morphine... Trying to get a handle on any one factor affects many
things. The doc would drop the level of a medication slightly and
suddenly her heartbeat and blood pressure would drop like a rock...
During one of the "scares" Jessica went completely white and
lifeless, then what I call the "OH CRAP! syndrome" would kick in as
monitor BEEPS would alert and there would be a rush of people come in
trying to stabilize things. When she'd pink back up again the
attendants would then go back to other children - and I would go
change my shorts... I must say that the whole experience has been
rather surreal. With such instability, she will be in the ICU for
longer than initially anticipated, probably till Wed - then anywhere
from 3 to 10 days before she is released from the Hospital.

Only a parent can relate to the excitement of something as simple as
a poop. She's opening her eyes a few minutes at a time now. And as
gratifying as it is, sometimes we got the "what's going on - help me!"
expression as she squirms but couldn't cry because of the breathing
tubes and the nurses give her more sedative... Jen is quick to sing
to her when this happens. Even the nurses have observed that
Jessie's heart rate drops dramatically when she does. Ahh, the power
of music! Fortunately, Jessica is doing all the right things toward
recovery. As of Sunday nite, 2 of her 3 chest drainage tubes are
out, and she is off the ventilator and breathing on her own. Jen
should be able to hold her today.

We can't thank everyone enough for the many prayers in Jessica's
behalf. Words can not express how wonderful the feeling of such wide
support has been. It has been humbling to be a focal point where
people of diverse Beliefs have really rallied together on our
families behalf. It really does change things. It's not something
this family will forget.

Jen will continue staying at the Hospital and I'm going back and
forth to keep tabs on our boys. As difficult as it has been, all in
all I can only feel gratitude and appreciation. Our emotional
situation has been very, very supportive and the best and brightest
medical practitioners are well beyond the point of simply applying
leaches... It became even more poignant with all those anxious to
see how things have been going that the barbershop community is
certainly more than just about the singing.

Be well everyone! :)

Roger

Rich Hasty in car accident...

Just received this news and was asked to pass it on to all of you.

Debbie

------------------------------

Rich Hasty, the director of California Heartland Chorus, was in a car
accident yesterday. He, his wife Kristen, and their baby were traveling home
from Knotts Berry Farm when they were hit just outside Fresno by a 16-year
old drunk driver.

Rich has two broken legs and will require surgery. Kristin has a broken
shoulder and the baby has a bad bruise from the seatbelt.

Please keep Rich and his family in your prayers. I believe Cheryl Tobin will
be directing the chorus in the interim.
