Help debugging profile issue
I've been working on getting my Paul Roark inspired inkset going in the SC7600 (MK+PK+4 Dilutions of PK+Toner). So far so good on most fronts, I was able to create a very good profile on some matte paper using all 6 K inks. I've been working on a profile for a lustre/glossy paper (Red River Palo Duro Softgloss Rag) using the 5 PK inks. Everything seemed to be working fine, made a profile, linearized it, double checked linearization. But when I printed the torture test, there is a section that prints in the darker midtones that are not smooth, almost look molted/speckled. I've made a scan of it and drew a box around where it shows up (it shows up in every section of the torture test print in this area). I've also attached my profile file. Any thoughts on what's going on / how to resolve? Thank you all!

New to QTR, paper profiles question 5
Hello, As Epson ABW gives me warm tint in highlights and cool tint in shadows I decided to try QTR. I basically stopped printing since the tints are driving me crazy and I only do B&W (well, now mostly in darkroom). Please correct me if I am wrong however I feel like the necessary step would be to buy (I have nowhere to rent) printer/paper calibration device. Is it possible to use somebody else's QTR profile (I use Hahnemuele Photo RAg 308/500, HM Ulrasmooth mostly) for the time being or do I need to create my own? I used UCmk-HMPRduo-neutral just to try however, the print is promising in terms of neutrality however very washed out and less contrasty compared to ABW print. ABW creates prints which are almost 1:1 (in terms of contrast) to what I see on monitor however have these color tints. It's clear I am at the beginning of steep learning curve and understand I need to invest time however I am confused as to how proceed and wasn't very successful in finding accessible tutorial ... I am more comfortable in my darkroom :) Woul Petr

I’ve heard that CUPS is gone from macOS Sonoma 14.4. Does this affect QTR? Is QTR future proofed against the eventual disappearance of CUPS? Allan Greenier

Colorport utility soft. (X-rite) 5
Hi I planned to run Colorport and ColorMunki photo, to linearize some piezo pro .quad. I use an old Mac book, and I have not found which macOS version use, that could run these 2 software. An apple java SE is needed to run Colorport Actually I use Mountain Lion, and if someone could tell me which macOS is convenient, it will be very helpful, at least to me. Regards

Editing the existing curve 5
I created this curve a year ago, and overall it looks good in blacks, shadows, and midtones, but the highlights are a bit blown out. What is meant to be a subtle gradient of light gray in the highlights appears almost white on paper. Is there a way to make slight adjustments to the existing curve without doing it all over again? I remember it was a very tedious process that took me a whole weekend to figure out and complete, and I would like to avoid redoing the whole thing, as I almost completely forgot what exactly I did a year ago. So if I can simply adjust the existing curve to fix the highlights, that would save me a lot of time and frustration. Any advice on how to do this and save a weekend would be greatly appreciated.

problems printing with quad tone rip
I bought Quad Tone Rip and started using it yesterday and have had a few problems. I couldn’t get the profiles to show in Print Tool. I de-installed and then reinstalled the software and this solved the problem. I have double checked that I'm using all the latest softwareversions But now when I print I just get an enlarged section of the print "mashed up" as per the examples below. I have doubled checked all image size and paper size settings and even when printed through photoshop using Quad 700 the same thing happens. I have also attached a couple of screen shots showing my settings in Print Tool. You advice would be most appreciated. Just starting out with QTR 16
Recently, I've become interested in inkjet printing on non-coated papers and my research led back to QTR. I use the Mac version with an Epson P-800, and the OEM inkset. I've read everything I could find, including various sources on making Digital Negatives, as well as all the documentation that comes with the app. I thought best to try making one curve as practice and see where it takes me. I managed to print the ink separation file (8 ink) using Print Tool. This is where I got stuck! It appears I need to assess the step patches and decide on the maximum ink necessary to completely cover the paper. I'm assuming this means the greatest reflection density. Problem is this is different for each of the inks. Both visually, and with a densitometer, the inks reach max density at different places. So, the first few questions: 1) When deciding on the calibration ink limit, do I consider the K step-wedge only? 2) I know that eventually I'll have to work with the ink descriptor files so I began to try to understand their structure and syntax. Does the DEFAULT_INK_LIMIT refer to the value of K determined from the first print of the Ink pattern page? 3) Where do the values of the other ink limits come from? LIMIT_C, LIMIT_M, etc. 4) If the answer to question 2 above is YES, why would the DEFAULT_INK_LIMIT=50, but LIMIT_K=45 (or anything other than 50 for that matter)? 5) Does anyone have a copy of "QTR Workflow" by Amadou Diallo that they are willing to share? I appreciate any help in pushing me alone here.

Using Epson Matte Black instead of Piezography Ultra HD Matte 12
Hi, New to the forum. I would normally post this over on the Piezography forum but it's down at the moment and I imagine plenty of you over here will have experience of piezography. Plus I'd thought about dipping my toe in these here waters anyway :) Has anyone ever tried using official Epson matte black in place of Piezography ultra HD matte black ink? While still using the other Piezography dark, medium and light gray inks, as well as the PIezography Pro linearisation tools. Roughly speaking, would this work? I envisage some hit to dmax, but that's fine, this is for printing hand made zines and books and so dmax isn't as much a concern as it is for when I make wall prints on fancier papers. I have a "Piezography Pro" setup on a 3880 and a R3000. I am only using 7 channels on each as I never print gloss/photo black, so my thinking is I would just use one of the two spare channels on each printer for an Epson matte black cartridge. Keeping the Piezography ultra HD matte black cartridge in place for when I make prints. Why would I do this you ask? Until investing in my piezography setup I had no idea quite how unstable Piezography matte black can be on the surface of the paper compared to Epson matte black. On many papers, the mearest light touch can easily smudge the Piezography matte black ink. Not such a problem for wall prints, but definitely an issue for zines and books. For my first book made using piezography inks (https://itsmrjack.com/product/sanctuary/) I got around this by using a spray fixative (I found Permajet PermaSeal the best) and really reducing the ink limit as much as possible while still getting a satisfactory dmax. However spraying each page was loooong, not to mention smelly. When printing on the same papers using standard Epson inks the result is vastly more stable to touch. I do have a P600 still running Epson inks, which I use for colour work, however I predominantly work in BW and I want to keep the Piezography workflow which I have found so precise and efficient for trialling and optimising papers that I may use in my books and zines, not to mention the toning, which I find lifts the end result above what I have ever been able to achieve with Epson inks. Cheers, Chris.

QTR not printing full width, intermittently 5
I’ve had a weird QTR failure twice tonight. Suddenly QTR stops printing in the right side of the paper. This sheet shows multiple passes through the printer (to not waste paper). The first 4 times were fine, and then it suddenly stopped printing part of the right side of the page. This behavior repeats with subsequent prints, but stopping at a different place each time. I’m pretty sure it’s QTR as the same printer doesn’t have this issue straight printing, it doesn’t seem to be printtool as that prints fine not using QTR printer. Rebooted computer and printer and no better. Uninstall and reinstall qtr and everything worked again. Until it started again after about 9 prints. MacOS 14.3.1, Epson P900 USB connected, QTR 2.8.2.

Finally an answer 2
Dear List, This may be useful to only a few of you because most of you don’t work on School lab printers as I do which have tightened security and admin permission set up. I do have admin permission so that is not the problem. We also use Jamf I think it is. If you remember our Print-Tool got an error message saying access denied to profiles but it would still print a negative albeit with no profile assigned. Way too contrasty to use. Because it still printed, students had no idea there was a problem. You all gave me lots of helpful advice and I tried Every. Single. Solution. Still the no access cropped up intermittently like it got fixed and then it didn’t. Mind you, we are currently doing palladium so this was giving me a heart attack. Today in lab I got it figured out. The quads themselves in ~QTR/quadtone had “no access.” However, I went to the file folder of all my quads and all of them were set to Read Only, not “no access.” But when I installed them in QuadP900 on the School computers with the latest security updates, the quads switched to no access without a warning. Sounds unbelievable but I checked and I kid you not. The reason the problem was intermittent is some of the quads were installed BEFORE the latest security update so they worked/were accessible. It was the new profiles that didn’t. So here is the fix, should you be so unlucky: select all your quads, right/control click on them and Get Summary Info. Then click on the lock and change Everyone to Read Only. The profiles are now accessible by Print-Tool. You may have to do that profile by profile but I was able to do groups of them at a time that way (we’re talking 49x3x2 profiles so grouping them was a lifesaver). Then as a last measure, select all profiles, right/control click to Get Info (not Get Summary Info) and make sure Read Only shows on every. Single. One. This happened after Apple’s latest security update so my guess is someone will come across this in the near future aside from just me. I’ve been working solidly with QTR for five years and this was a first. Now if I could just figure out how to magically fix my P900 print head in my office that just broke. Bad week. Ink Limit Target for Epson P-900 2
To all; It turns out that the mk-limit target for setting the ink limit is not accurate for the P-900. Any prospect of QTR support for new P7570/9570 5
I have noticed that the P7000/P9000 printers have now been discontinued by Epson. Is there any work being done on getting support for the newer P7580/9570 printers that are replacing them? I know these printers have 12 ink channels which I suppose will be the big issue in supporting these newer printers.

digital negative density range 9
Suppose I was building a uv transmission densitometer to use for measuring digital negatives (I'm not). Specificially, digital negatives made with QTR and 3rd party ink. What range of densities would the instrument need to be capable of accurately measuring? Asking for a friend.

If it isn't one thing it is another 8
Has anyone seen this message and have a fix. All my students for the last week have been printing cyanotype negs with apparently NO profile (since the printing still happens in Print-Tool). I thought I was nuts and that I was a horrible profile maker because their prints were way too contrasty but on my office P900 the negatives are awesome as they are at home. Until I found out the real issue I thought well hell, maybe all Epson P900s are not created alike. This has happened with some new security update. It may be I have to right click on the QuadP900 folder and select read/write? There’s a reason I store a bottle of bourbon in my office file cabinet…. Chris

Increasing Desnity on Negatives with QTR and QCDN 8
This Xmas i have bought PrintMakers Friend. He recommends a negative of 2.4 but with my EpsonP800 with PhotoBlack Ink Printing the QTR calibration test i can get at 75% ink only 1.8-1.9 Density. And i would like to get 2.2-2.4. If i set to 80% the film doens't allow such amount of ink and i can't get finer details. Do you get more density with Epson printer? Chaning to MB doens't affect only 3% I use QTR with EpsonP800 and OEM inks. I linearize with Richard Boutwell software and with my I1Pro. Thank You

DTP with Toyobo / Measles (Mottling) Issue 20
Hello, This is my first post on this forum. I do DTP on my Epson P800 using Toyobo KM73/95 GR. I've been grappling with the persistent "measles (mottling)" issue for over a year. Despite researching extensively on the Internet and consulting some books, it seems that the commonly suggested cause is insufficient contact between the film and the plate. However, in my case, I don't use a film or vacuum, so there might be another underlying cause. (I've encountered this issue with the double exposure method as well.) The issue tends to manifest in bright areas, particularly in light grey and close to white, especially when the image is very simple. I've encountered this problem throughout the year, so environmental factors might not be the primary consideration. Since the mottling occurs during the drying process right after developing, I've experimented with various drying/blotting methods, but none have proven effective. I've tested both 1440dpi and 2880dpi printing, but there's no noticeable difference. Thoroughly drying the plate after printing and before exposing it also hasn't yielded positive results. Despite being in contact with Toyobo for nearly a year about this issue and sending them sample plates with the mottling error for examination multiple times, they have not shared any updates on their investigation. Upon someone's recommendation, I am awaiting sample plates of Torelief, as they are said to provide better results. In the meantime, I decided to share my experience here to inquire if any of you have faced a similar situation and if there are known solutions to this issue. Thank you for your attention. Low resolition/“grainy” prints-negatives 4
Hello, I’m struggling to print negatives for alt. processes. the negatives printed with QTR and the prints shows grain or what I assume is a dither pattern. Pleas see the image attached. The negative is printed on Epson SC-P6000 with Print Tool version 2.3.4.(1) on Fomei clear film 180( pictorico alternative in Central Europe), using the OEM Epson inks. The curves are created with QuadToneProfiler-proDN The quad tone rip is set to 2880 dpi, uni-directional, photo black ink. Version 2.8.2 for Mac OS I’ve been struggling with QTR for a while, and started to print negatives with Epson ABW, when I get beautifully smooth prints. However I would like to utilize all the advantages of QTR/Print Tool workflow. I hope someone could advice me pleas what I’m doing wrong. Thank you
