QTR tutorial
The latest Mac version 2.2a includes a tutorial on using QTR. Some of it was available before, but it seems to me (a beginner) to be more complete. Scott

'Creating Curves For Dummies'
2
I've been using Roy Harrington's QTR for about a week and a half now with reasonable success mostly experimenting with Epson Enhanced paper.I think I have a good understanding of the basic operation including the basic settings with the QTRgui,Ink limit adjustment, gamma adjustment, etc. I've read the QTRgui "Help" info and it's easy to understand and straightforward. But earlier this evening I felt adventurous and started reading Tom Moore's tutorial on 'Creating Custom Curves' and that was the beginning of the end of my comprehension. It seems I'm having a real problem grasping the concept and understanding of the technical aspects (terminology like descriptor files, linearizations, densitometers, quadprofiles, etc are confusing the heck out of me). So now I have two questions: 1) Is the 'custom curves' application really necessary for optimal results with the QTR? It seems that just about everybody on this forum has adopted the practice so there must be something to it. 2) Does anyone know where I can find a more simplistic tutorial on this topic....a Creating Custom Curves for Dummies explanation? I want to continue to learn more about QTR and upgrade my skills for producing better quality digital black and white. Looking forward to hearing back from you.

Custom Curves
2
I find the HELP information jargon on CURVE CREATION in QTRgui to be generally incomprehensible. Not that it would do me much good even if I could understand it because I don't have a densitometer or spectrophotometer which I believe are essential tools required for creating accurate curves I do essentially all of my printing on an Epson 2200 with Epson UC ink and either Epson Watercolor Paper-Radiant White or Velvet Fine Art Paper. Using either of these two papers and the canned curves that came with QTR in the combination 70% UC-EEnhMatte-coolSe and 30% UC-EEnhMatte-warm I get what I consider to be acceptable quality neutral tone ptints. What I'm wondering is, could I do any better if I had custom made curves specifically generated for the two papers I actually use in place of the canned curves for Epson Enhanced Matte Paper? Is there any possibility that the family of curves that came with QTR will be expanded in the future to include Velvet Fine Art and Watercolor Paper? Is there any one who has created custom curves for these papers who would be willing to share them with others who for one reason or another aren't capable of doing the job for themselves? Is there any particular place one can go to to find other custom curves that can be downloaded and used with QTR? Donald

Heavy Chocolate Brown Profile?
I'VE POSTED THIS ON THE B&W SITE AS WELL. I'm sorry to say that I don't have an eye-one, only an X-Rite 400 densitometer. I've switched from a 7500, which I've had monumental clogging problems with to a 2200 with Epson Ultracrome inks. I do not believe I can construct a heavy chocolate brown profile for this ink set with a Densitometer. Is there any one out there who is into making profiles who could add it to the files or who would be willing to make one for me for a price? You could contact me off group if you have great experience doing this. Otherwise, is there a spectrometer, which I could use successfully to make profiles with Ultracrome, or MIS equivalent inks, which would not cost me $1,500.00? Thanks, John H P.S. I am presently printing on Mohab Entrada Natural although I'm looking at Innova papers as well. JH

I would like to use QTR with Epson Velvet paper (Epson 2200 printer). Anyone have a recommendation on which standard QTR curves/blends give the best results? Thanks.

I just uploaded a file: revised version from Carl at 12:48pm PST it is a tutorial on curves by Carl Schofield. John Vitollo was kind enough to did it up for us. It assumes a Mac setup, but may be of general help. Scott

QTR and Semi Gloss
This question has been posted more than once on the Yahoo Digital Black and White forum but so far no one has come forward with a solution. When printing on Epson semi gloss paper and using the QTR, prints have a dark brownish tone, it's impossible to get cool tones. The printer is Epson 2200 with UC inks. The Epson premium glossy profile is being used and so is the UC-pk EPrem Semi-Gloss cool curve. A couple of us from that group would like to know. Thanks in advance! SteveZ

Does anyone else see a need to "Free Edit" Curves?
QTR for Windows has a lot of nice features. I like the auto partitioning of gray inks. I'm using a MIS UT7 inkset on my 2200. I created a lovely neutral profile using 5 of the 7 inks in the set. I wanted to use that as a starting point to create a sepia profile. But I couldn't add a curve shape that I wanted. It seems difficult or impossible to do with QTR. Going to PS, creating a curve, and importing it into QTR seems a difficult and laborious process. Does anyone else see the ability to add a curve and edit it freely as desireable? It would be very nice to have the ability to adjust a curve on screen, without plugging in dozens of points. I may well be missing something here, so if anyone has insights or solutions, I'd love to know how to do this. Thanks, Lou

New to QTR and need help

Ok, I am on a PC and I just DL the newest version. When I went to the turtorial to read how to create a profile for the paper I am using and ink ( Epson Luster and UC inks ) the PDF file does not have all the info in it and cuts out at page 17 but the header list the appendix and etc up to page 32 that explains all the settings for the file you configure and what each items means. At leat I assume. Where can I find a complete document. Also when I try to create the profile it lays out so much ink it is crazy, just gobs of it on the paper. I have never had this problem before. Please advise. The LINEARIZE was created using a densitometer. If anyone can help that woudl be awesome. The 21 step wedge with this is comignout magenta big time. Before I set yellow to 0 it was horrible adn again globs of ink on the paper. I also have no idea what this means either as the documentation does not explain it so I jsut put in some numbers that the doc say it was neutral, GRAY_HIGHLIGHT=4 GRAY_SHADOW=8 #GRAY_OVERLAP=10 Here is my file; PRINTER=Quad7600 CURVE_NAME=7600-luster GRAPH_CURVE=YES N_OF_INKS=7 DEFAULT_INK_LIMIT=80 BOOST_K=100 LIMIT_K= LIMIT_C= LIMIT_M= LIMIT_Y=0 LIMIT_LK=30 LIMIT_LC=30 LIMIT_LM=70 N_OF_GRAY_PARTS=2 GRAY_INK_1=K GRAY_VAL_1=100 GRAY_INK_2=LK GRAY_VAL_2=37 GRAY_INK_3= GRAY_VAL_3= GRAY_INK_4= GRAY_VAL_4= GRAY_INK_5= GRAY_VAL_5= GRAY_INK_6= GRAY_VAL_6= GRAY_INK_7= GRAY_VAL_7= GRAY_HIGHLIGHT=4 GRAY_SHADOW=8 #GRAY_OVERLAP=10 GRAY_GAMMA=1 GRAY_CURVE= # # Toner Partition Information # N_OF_TONER_PARTS=0 TONER_INK_1= TONER_VAL_1= TONER_INK_2= TONER_VAL_2= TONER_HIGHLIGHT= TONER_SHADOW= TONER_GAMMA= TONER_CURVE= N_OF_UNUSED=2 UNUSED_INK_1=C UNUSED_INK_2=M UNUSED_INK_3= UNUSED_INK_4= UC_NEUTRALIZER=YES LINEARIZE="0.0 0.02 0.06 0.10 0.14 0.20 0.24 0.29 0.33 0.38 0.44 0.48 0.53 0.64 0.78 0.98 1.17 1.45 1.78 2.37 3.50 " Thanks, Kev

After reading your reply to Andy's post, I thought I'd try the same experiment with my 2200. I printed a b&w image on epson semi-gloss using the UC-pk Permajet Oyster cool curve and....you're right....no hint of brown, a very neutral print indeed. A bit of bronzing but nothing too serious. Which begs the question about the QTR....why do my prints turn out brown using the semi-gloss curve but print out quite beautifully in fact with the...what's it called again?...the Permajet Oyster curve? I just don't understand this. it I paper.

New user with QTR - having some printing problems
Greetings everyone. Its nice to see a community dedicated to the QTR. I just installed QTR on my eMac this evening, and I'm using Photoshop CS. I have two printers hooked up via USB: an Epson 4000, and an Epson 7600. For the maiden voyage, I installed everything onto the 4000 to get a feeling for it. I installed both the GRAY-Lab, GRAY-Photo and GRAY-Matte, as well as the RGB versions, to which I'm still not quite clear which ones to use. For my trials, I've been using GRAY-Lab and Gray-Photo. Anyway, I went to Print with Preview, selecting Quadtone4000 for my printer, and I tried selecting what I thought would work for the profiles (cool netural tones), and I'm trying to print on Epson Premium Luster Photo paper, which I did notice wasn't listed in the 4000 profiles that were installed (and could be chosen from in the list). Each time I've tried to print something out, it seems as if the blacks aren't printing, or aren't printing very well. After a few tries with the Premium Luster paper, I tossed in a page of Enhanced Matte, switched to "Matte Black" ink, and it gave me the same thing; the blacks didn't look like they were being put down. The FAQ that comes with the program didn't help me understand what the issue might be, so if anyone has an easier FAQ they could direct me to, or has had any expirence using this RIP with an Epson 4000, it would be great to hear any advice. I'm kinda scratching my head as to how to get this program to work with my prints. Thanks guys. Looking forward to contributing what I can to this community in the future. Cheers, Sid Ceaser http://www.sidceaserfineart.com

gossy or luster prints

Hello, Group I own ImagePrint, but have been testing qtr on ep enh matte for a few months, and have found it to be superior in rendering shadow detail. I also like the greater latitude it provides for toning. One question: I just d/l the latest version, and was pleased to find the profiles for semi gloss paper. So I ran a print on ep premium luster with the permajet oyster curves, and was pleased to get a fairly nice print with no metamerism or crossover, and only minimal bronzing in some of the grey. I wonder if anyone is getting great prints on luster or gloss paper, without any bronzing or posterizing, and if so, what paper/curves/paper settings you are using? Thanks Jack

To Diane Re: gossy or luster prints
No Tom, I haven't tried creating custom curves as yet, but it's something I'm definately going to try doing in the very near future and I'll probably start with EPSG. wrote: 13 for LC are 29 and are not taste. There's seems to be a problem with running the new QTR version 2.2a on Jaguar -- it works fine on Panther. So for the time being if you are still using the Jaguar OS stay with QTR version 2.1d Sorry for any hassles due to this. Roy

Split tones with QTR and UC inks
2
In a message to Paul Roark from Shilesh Jani posted on the digital B&W printer groug, Shilesh briefly describes a manner of achieving split tones using the UT7 inks on a 1280 printer. Can anyone comment if this is possible with the Epson 2200 using UC inks? Thanks, Don Bryant

Innova papers for books
I just ordered a sample pack of the Innova papers (thanks Jim!) and am wondering if anyone has done any testing for their use in books. I have read the previous posts that stated that the Premier Art Hot Press was the best for durability and ink transfer but don't know if the new Innova papers have been tested. Thanks, Jenny

I got an email from Ann (montauklady) saying she is either banned or blocked from posting in this group--I don't believe she can even get on the page for the group. She mentioned that she had been setting up an email blocker and wondered if it was related to that--but can still read and post on the DigitalB/W Print group--so that doesn't make any sense. Anyone know about this?--I'm going to try and send Scott (as moderator) her email also. Diane ----------- Diane B. Fields picnic@... photo site http://www.pbase.com/picnic
