Re: Epson P5370

Chris, thank you very much for this detail. I tried multiple time to install the p5370 with the InstallP5370=P900 before returning to this group to find what I was doing wrong. No problem at all once I changed the command to InstallP5300=P900.

Re: QTR-Create-ICC-RGB.exe

Roy,
Thank you. That worked!

Re: QTR-Create-ICC-RGB.exe

Without column headings the program tries to guess what each column of data is.
Its expecting "grayish" values for A and B ~ i.e. within -20 to +20, so misses calling it A and B.
Just put a header line in the file:
L<tab>A<tab>B
(real tabs)

Re: QTR-Create-ICC-RGB.exe

I just tried again using 51 Lab measurements (file attached), which is the same as I usually do. But again, QTR-Create-ICC RGB (version 2.7.9.0) produces what looks like a grayscale icc profile (out file attached).
?

Re: QTR-Create-ICC-RGB.exe

I only used only 16 Lab values, which apparently isn't enough for an icc. I couldn't find any documentation regarding a minimum.

Show us the Spyder output.

QTR-Create-ICC-RGB.exe

I use QTR-Create-ICC-RGB.exe to create icc's for soft proofing my alt process prints, and have been doing so for many years. After I do a calibration, I make a calibrated negative with a step table that goes from 0 to 255 in steps of 5 RGB units (0, 5, 10, ... 255). I measure the print with a Spyder and then drag the Spyder output file onto the QTR-Create-ICC-RGB.exe, which creates the icc profile. This has always worked and has given me very reliable soft proofs for cyanotype, vandyke, and kallitype.
?
Today, I printed a color step table, not with a digital negative, but rather with my inkjet printer. I wanted to see if I could make an icc profile that I could use to simulate printing color separations.
I measured the print with my Spyder and dragged the Spyder output file onto QTR-Create-ICC-RGB.exe. The QTR-Create output file shows that the L values linear, but the A and B values are all zero!?
?
What am I doing wrong?

I am ready to try this again. Thanks as always, Clay.

Thanks very much for the follow-up Clay.

From what I can tell, ?platen gap isn’t all that critical - the plates and carriers are well below that thickness - 1.1mm I think. I believe this is just there in case the media is curled slightly and it prevents accidental head strikes. I think the more critical thing is to define the media thickness relatively accurately.?

Thanks Clay - really appreciate you sharing this info in an easy guide. Very useful! I don't have a P900 as yet, but I know it just around the corner!

Setting up P900 for Direct to Plate methods using QTR

Another PSA. I have wrestled with helping people set up their P900s for DTP use over the last couple of years. I think I have finally figured out a pretty solid workflow for getting this done. It has a number of steps, and is documented here:

Why do you think it is only laying down black inks? Do the negs look different from before? The color inks in the profile are minuscule and only there to make sure some ink is going down all the lines in order to prevent clogs. They would not show up as any color as mixing those together in relatively equal amounts will produce a gray tone.

Hello,
?
Hoping for some insight/suggestions. This is in a school lab setting. Working with Print Tool and a P800 on a Mac Mini M1. IT forced another update, now to Sequioia 15.3.1. This resulted in the QTP800 printer no long showing up as an available printer. I uninstalled the P800 driver and Print Tool, and reinstalled. This was successful in terms of the printer being available. I reinstalled all of the quad files, and I remade the presets. All seemed fine. When printing digi negs, now the printer is only laying down black inks. I checked the quad files and those look as they should with some color inks. I restarted the machine again and all of the apps. No change, only laying down black inks.
?
Any suggestions? (Besides telling IT to stop updating OS in the middle of the term.)

Re: P800 - Only Black Inks Laying Down

I agree that permissions is a likely suspect.

By far the easiest and best way to repair permissions is to simply
re-run the Install-QTR package. This automatically corrects all the
permissions in the /Library/Printers/QTR/Quadtone folders (fixes both folders and .quad files).

FWIW, when I run into stuff like this, I nuke (delete) all the .quad files for a particular printer in /Library/Printers/QTR/Quadtone and then do some spring cleaning in my installation folder to get rid of .quad files with names like P8xx-last-desperate-attempt-77.quad before double clicking the install command again. It sounds to me like there may be some cruft in the files in the /Library folders for this printer. You can delete these .quad files and they will re-install

Hope this helps.

Because I “think” (but I’m not Roy) the Print-Tool is not accessing your profiles for some reason and printing an unprofiled neg even if the profile shows up in your dropdown menu.
Other than that I have no clue but this has happened to me at least four times on 4 different computers with three different printers ad nauseam.
