Hi QRP ops.
I think CA is going to be a challenge, given Aurora condx - we'll be using mostly high bands. (CW, SSB, RTTY)

Hiroki, I'm in contact with the developers at RemoteHams.com and am working on an iPhone app frontend for their service.? That will make it truly universal.? If you haven't seen that service, take a look , it's pretty neat and easy to set up.? However, the app will only be receive until we figure out our own VoIP backend from the phone to the computer.

Re: OPs this weekend and other stuff!
Tim et al,
It's too bad the band path between W1 and W6 wasn't too good this afternoon. At my apartment QTH I did hear a few stations on 15; 17 and 20 were decent but not hopping. We will try again. Keep me posted whenever any one of you will plan to be on air. As our new member (I assume he joined) K1TW Tom who is bi-coastal said to me at the last AmTech day, that east coast stations are much more active on 30 and 40. That is indeed the case in my short experience here. I also hear a lot of EU stations on 20 and 40. I am going to have dinner with Tom Saturday here and hope to learn more about east coast ops.
On another note, Tim and whoever else who might be interested in MP-1 portable vertical antenna, the eHam product review gives a lot of user experience report on it as well as some modifications many hams
have added. One interesting summary comment, which I fully agree, is reproduced here:
http://www.eham.net/reviews/detail/1378?page=1
??
"This
antenna does lend itself to mods and add-ons. Use a longer mast and a longer
whip for greater efficiency. Hustler and DX Engineering masts should work, and
the MFJ and Buddistick whips telescoping whips will work with it as well. Get a
larger clamp for mounting flexibilty. Get a mini cord reel to coil up your
homemade counterpoise."
Have fun es 73,

I would think we would be on 20, 17, and 15 meters, using cw and ssb. Just give me a call on the cell phone when you are set up. Today I finished mounting the MP-1 on an old construction light stand. Getting the radials off the ground will now be easy and I drilled holes in the legs for ground stakes. After our last outing Hiro, I figured it was time to get this project done.

Hi Everyone,
Looks as though Spring is on its way. Don't forget that Daylight savings time begins at midnight tonight.
I spoke with Dave Crocker yesterday about getting together on Sunday. To make this early outing simple, we thought about getting together at 1:00 at Seal Point Park in San Mateo.
The weather should be perfect for dusting off the cobwebs from our equipment and playing with new antennas.
Other topics:
Deon, I won't be making Dayton this year, but Dave might be interested. It's too bad we did not hook up last year, but trying to hear a cell phone inside the exhibitor buildings was near impossible.
The ATS4 QRP rig that Nick mentioned a few postings ago are being kitted over the next few days. Steve Weber, KD1JV will begin taking orders this weekend. This should be a perfect rig for use when a small lightweight package is required.

Re: Fist QRP ops from east coast
Tim et al,The only antenna I have with me is the MP-1 with my own concoction of 3 sets of 15 radial wires, totaling 45, made of computer ribbon cables. I did not bring a tuner, so I tune the antenna manually. The xceiver is my same old, original FT817 (not a new ND model). I would love to use a mag loop, but haven't come up with a collapsible/transportable model yet. Can you imagine what the TSA would do to me if I walk into the airport building with a 12" diameter mag loop? ?I'd be happy to hear from anyone who has any suggestion for an air travel friendly ML. |

As always, you are the master of QRP Hiro. That is a remarkable considering your power level and lack of space. You did not mention what antenna you are using. Maybe you constructed a new mag loop with a 12" diameter for super portable use? Or maybe for efficiency you strung up a 4' long dipole?
Have fun and please keep us informed.

I brought my minimalist QRP gear on this trip and operated it for the first time this evening. My QTH turned out to be excellent: 6th floor with an openable (is there such a word?) window and no local QRN. My first?contact was an SSB 2.5 watts 20m contact with TI2AIM in Costa Rica. That's about 3000 miles! In quick succession, I worked a bunch of W4s coming in loudly. Among them is a CW contact with K4MQ who was running 5 watts QRP from Alabama. I heard W6s and W7s though they were not as strong as W4s and W9s. All of these were between 1830 and 1900 EST. ?I have

From the website:
The firmware is still being
tweaked, the manual is barely started and some parts have a much longer
lead time to obtain than expected, so I won't likely be able to start
taking orders or to start shipping this new rig until the 3d or 4th week
of March. The price is now set at $225.00
The ATS-4 now has the ability to
transmit PSK using Morse paddle input or from the message memories.
Vojtech, AB2ZA has been working on a PSK decoder chip we hope can be
tacked into the rig to make a truely stand alone PSK station. Although
the decoder chip is not likely to be fully ready by the time the rig
finally starts to ship, we hope to have all the firmware "hooks" in
place so it can be added at a later date without the need for firmware
updates to the rig. Of course, Pocketdigi software can still be used for
PSK or RTTY modes.
That's hot.
I can't make it to PAARA this Friday, friends in from out of town through the weekend.

Mt Laguna is close enough for a daytrip and there's plenty of exploring to be done in the Cleveland National Forest area. Easy access to high elevation by road. day-pass (good for 1 yr) is required for parked vehicles, and can be obtained at the local ranger station. There are a few campgrounds in this area - all of which should provide easy access to hiking trails, all good for hf-packing.

I was at the site around noon, and decided to setup close to the road, to save some time. At elevation 6000 ft, there's plenty of snow around from the recent winter wx. The wx today was a perfect 50F, sunny, no wind.
Antenna: 20m vertical using 20ft telescopic pole. Rig: IC-7k
The 20m band was alive with S9 signals and it was almost difficult to find a spot to call CQ on the SSB portion - 14.342.5 was clear so I made a few qso's there.
20m Log: DX and distant stations heard: LU, VE, OH2, JA, P40, XE, Alaska HF-packer near Fargo, AK. Stations Worked: OH2, W0, W7
I'll post pics in the Photos section.
