40M has been open the last couple of nights into Europe and Australia. The noise here in Brisbane has been no more than S1 so it has been a pleasure listening. I have not been able to break the pile ups though. I have been calling I2VRN Roberto in Milano, but no luck with the big signals on the east coast. He has a 4 element beam at 100ft. running 600 watts

Nice locations in the San Diego area.
For when you northerners qrp ops make it down to San Diego, I'll post notes of locations to visit in/around the San Diego area.
Mt Laguna is close enough for a daytrip and there's plenty of exploring to be done in the Cleveland National Forest area.
Easy access to high elevation by road. day-pass (good for 1 yr) is required for parked vehicles, and can be obtained at the local ranger station. There are a few campgrounds in this area - all of which should provide easy access to hiking trails, all good for hf-packing.

I was at the site around noon, and decided to setup close to the road, to save some time.
At elevation 6000 ft, there's plenty of snow around from the recent winter wx.
The wx today was a perfect 50F, sunny, no wind.
Antenna: 20m vertical using 20ft telescopic pole.
Rig: IC-7k
The 20m band was alive with S9 signals and it was almost difficult to find a spot to call CQ on the SSB portion - 14.342.5 was clear so I made a few qso's there.
20m Log:
DX and distant stations heard: LU, VE, OH2, JA, P40, XE, Alaska HF-packer near Fargo, AK.
Stations Worked: OH2, W0, W7

This site is very useful indeed. I had recently exchanged emails with Pieter-Tjerk about his work, especially on the SDR design in use here.
He utilizes an A/D (samples the entire 30MHz at once) then followed by FPGA to do the DSP. His design is unfortunately not published (yet)
but I think it would make a really great homebrew project.
He updated the site recently, (adding more bands) and at this stage the # bands is a limitation of the CPU and I/O bandwidth to the server.
Dave, for QRP experiments, and antenna far field tests, I also use psk reporter, or better even, wspr. You may want to also check them out.

Hi All,
Nick and I manage to survive the FYBO camping trip to Monte Bello Open Space camp ground on the side of Black Mountain (El. 2600 ft.). The weather was OK going up to the campsite so we manage to setup camp and put up 2 antennas. Nick's 20M vertical and my spiral wound vertical for 40M. There was some DX on 40, heard stations in Japan, Virgin Islands and Brazil. Forty was noisy and the DX attracted pile ups so I was unable to get any DX contacts. I gave Tim a call on the cell phone to see is he could hear me...5-9 in San Carlos so at least I knew I was getting out. I called CQ a couple of times but no response. I thought I was sending a QRZ to a Mexican station and a guy in Newark, CA came back. He said if I looked careful I could probably see the yellow light on his antenna mast. So much for
DX.
We managed to
get something to eat and took a short walk up hill to Black Mountain. The sky looked very threatening so we headed back to the refuse of our tents. The weather got worse with a lot of noise from the high winds so it was impossible to sleep. It started raining heavily around 3 AM and didn't calm down until around 6 AM. At 7 Nick calls out "Hey Dave are you awake, your antenna fell down". When I looked around I discovered I was no longer in a tent but a swimming pool. Luckily, my Thermo-O-Rest kept most of my sleep bag out of the water.
I climbed out of the tent and could hardly see my hand in front of my face for all the fog. We got the antenna back up and I tried to get on 40. There was a lot of noise and broadcast stations and not much activity on 40 phone. We decide we should make at least one contest contact before we left. Nick got on 20M CW and made a contact with a fellow contester here in California.
We got down the
hill in record time and made a hasty retreat to Alice's Restaurant.

Nick,I am glad you were able to make up for the poor WX. Sounds like you found another good radio location. By all means, we should try to get up there since it is so accesible.
I listened for you guys early yesterday afternoon at my home QTH on 14060 to no avail. The condx seemed pretty good. I heard JAs, VKs, ?ZLs on both on 20 and 17, though 40 was dead. ?It looks like sunspots are coming back.
Unfortunately, I will be out of town again from 2/10 thru 2/16, missing, I am sure, some good openings. I will again be out of town for an extended period of time beginning early March; my wife and dog and I will be driving to the east coast and stay tin Cambridge, MA, until late April. I will carry my FT817 with me during that time. I am planing to attend the West Coast Military Radio collectors'
convention in San Louis Obispo 4/30-5/1. Anyone wants to join me?

ps My B29 radio restoration project (the ART-13 and BC-348 combo) is progressing slowly but steadily. I am looking for knobs, ?switches and connectors for my BC348Q receiver. My BC348 was once restored and now needs more refined attention; the precious owner apparently changed the a couple of original knobs to something else for non-original functions. ?A dead, neglected BC348 set would serve me well to cannibalize for my purpose. Any help/lead would b e appreciated.?

I am still experimenting with the Moxon 2 element vertical. I off-set fed the thing with a 4:1 balun to try and get the feed point closer to the ground. It is supported by two Jackite 31 ft. poles using the metal holders that Jackite makes for the poles and no guys, which OK if there is no wind. I want to try end feed the driven element using a length of RG-174 as half the driven element with a choke balun to decouple the feed point. I have seen people do this with an end-fed vertical dipole.
We should set up a schedule and try to work you on 20M. You might listen for us on Saturday on 14.345.5 which is the HF Packer frequency. There is usually nobody there but I plan to call CQ FYBO and give it a try. We will also be on 14.285 which is the QRP freq.

Howdy Folks,
It's looking pretty overcast out there. :)? If you look just past the campsite on that map you can see the summit of Black Mountain, nice views from up there.? The elevation gain from parking lot to camp looks to be about 400' over 1.7 miles.? A friend from SCCARA is planning on coming out tomorrow if it's not too rainy, I think.? Last time I was up there I had 5 bars on my cell phone, there's an antenna tower in between camp and the Black Mountain summit.? Also, there's a payphone up there, (650) 948-9634.? Feel free to wake Dave with a prank call.
