Re: QRPPlus cabling

Hi Kees,
I am sorry that you are having problems with the radio. I have never heard of this happening. J3 on the AF-Board is the connector that is used to send the audio to the front panel and swr meter. Pin 1 specifically is connected to the front "phones" jack. If it is burned the only thing I can think of is: 1. Something was plugged into the phones jack that had a lot of current. 2. C41 (the large 220Mf cap that is connected to the output of the LM386 audio IC shorted (but even that should not cause a burned wire) There are no power connections even close to that area. In any case, if the wire is burned, then most likely it affected the audio amp area for the phones. As far as skipping around in frequencies, there is only one way that I know to do this. see page 6 of the manual. the MEM button is used to skip large sections as stored memory locations. If this is not working most likely the battery needs to be replaced CR2016. In order to do that properly the top board has to be removed carefully and new battery placed on the AF board (the board you will be looking at for your burned wire issue). I have attached some images to help. I hope this is helpful Guy (N1GMM) |

I have a QRP ++ (sometime during original production the plus was factory upgraded and called the ++) with combo tuner/ps/ and charger in near mint condition been setting on the shelf here. Also still have original Index Labs shipping boxes. Let me know if interested since looking to thin out the herd of gear here. QRPPlus cabling
Kees Taverne
?Hi all, I own a QRPPlus (1st edition) boughjt it years ago, sold it and now it is back again.
But there is an issue ith this radio. On the second PCB (from above) there is J3 with some connections to the front. The first wire (red) has been burned out. So I will start to replace the cable but probably some other oner reconizes this issue and knows what causes this. Further I have a question about the VFO. As I can remember when I owned it for the first time I could quickly jump between HAM bands but that does not seem to work anymore. Another HAM told me that there has been a firmware upgrade could someone confirm that and if so was that an eprom delivery or can it be updated yourself? I think I have to check the complete radio first and find a suitable microphone. Than in advance for all answers. de Kees PA1CJT |
Re: Need Advice
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýYour xmit output is pretty normal.? Some rigs can get 5-6W out on
CW, but 2-3W out on SSB is about it. As I recall, 100uV at the antenna input should give an S-9 reading.? A 6 dB loss through the mixer sounds about right -- but it has been a long time since I have done anything with my QRPPlus.? And removing the SBL-1 mixer without destroying any pc board traces is a challenge!? If you do decide to replace it, I highly recommend that you install a socket. In any event, your problem may well be elsewhere. Larry -- W1HUE On 5/10/2020 1:05 PM, wes Bolin wrote:

Need Advice

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýI have been troubleshooting my deaf QRP+ transceiver.? It works on Transmit with 4W out on CW and 2W out on SSB.? 100 uV on 20M gives about S-5 meter reading.? I can barely hear 1 uV. ? I thought it might be the First Mixer SBL-1, but I was cautioned that it might not be because the transmit would be bad also (mine isn¡¯t bad).? This is after I pulled the board from the radio.? Well, I put it back in the radio and Measured signal levels with my TEK 100 MHz scope and HP 8640B generator. ? Here are signal levels at several points in the circuit: Antenna input was adjusted at 14.200 MHz for 20 mV. (one cm pk-pk). Measuring at C40 after the BPF was the same 20 mV.? This input to the SBL-1 Mixer. Measured on C41 4 mV.? This is the Mixer output and input to AMP. (-6 dB loss) Measured Amp Output on C40 20 mV.? ? Interesting is that with 20 mV at the Antenna Input on 14.200 MHz ?I get about S-5 on the S-meter; ??????????????????????????????? with 20 mV at the Antenna input on 50.000 Mhz?? I get about S-5 on the S-meter. (same). ??????????????????????????????? And both signals are same volume. My questions are: Is the SBL-1 good or bad? If it is bad, How do I get it off the board ??? ? I need help to get my radio back in proper operation.? Can anybody help me?? If I am on the wrong track, then point me in the right direction? ? Thanks, Wes ? Sent from for Windows 10 ? |
QRP+ with matching tuner FS

I have had as much fun with all my QRP rigs and am ready to part with many of them due to age and interests in other radio items.
I have a QRP+ with matching antenna tuner and battery power supply for sale. Pleas contact me at Djwilcox01 at gmail dot com. Thank you. Dave K8WPE since 1960 David J. Wilcox K8WPE¡¯s iPad |

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýAs I recall, CW output should be 4 - 6 W, depending on band.? SSB
PEP output is less.? Haven't fooled with a QRP+ in 3 years or so.?

Re: QRP+ is deaf
Larry, you mentioned that with a partial failure, power output may be low.? Is that in the 2-3 watt level or is it lower?? My QRP+ does not get 5 watts but I would enjoy the extra 3dB if I could get it. Expect at least 4 - 6 W CW, depending on band.? At least 2W PEP on SSB - might get 5 if really lucky.

I don't have a spectrum analyzer so can't check for spurs unless I sweep with my general coverage receiver.? BTW? What is the power Output with the pot turned all the way up on CW?? ?And what PEP output should I expect when it is working properly? Thanks again.? And the documentation that was referenced is really appreciated.? I had this radio many years ago and enjoyed it greatly, so am anxious to get this one going. Re: QRP+ is deaf
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýIf you are getting good xmtr output, it very well may NOT be the input mixer (SBL-1).? You can test further -- if you have some sort of spectrum analyzer,? check for spurious output (you might also be able to use another receiver).? Many harmonics and other "junk" from the transmitter could indicate that one leg of the mixer is shot.? This would still allow xmtr output but greatly reduce receiver sensitivity.? Do you have a schematic of the rig? If not, you can download one . Or just replace the mixer (not a minor undertaking) and see what
happens . . . 72 & Good luck.
