QRP+ or QRP++ getting dusty, sits on shelf, doesnt work? 5
Hi All; I must have fixed, tweeked, 6+ QRP+'s and despite that one has to pull the unit completely apart to change finals and do probe contortions to troubleshoot, I really like these things. I have a few spare parts. (one must be careful of protecting the mixer and it hates high SWR's) It is a fun well built rig that uses a very high freq PLL with the old motorola processor (80C39) and an old UV eraseable EPROM (I used to make these things at Intel.. years ago) it is a fun rig to use/repair for me. I would love to look at the source code for the Microprocessor but this is not available. Anyway.. if you have an old dusty QRP+ or QRP++ working or not working or are cleaning shack. Please do email me. I am NOT a collector, I like working on these, getting them running and finding new homes for them. I do like to use them too.. Dont have a lot of bucks.. but we can talk. Send me an email or message me here. "guy at eastroad dot org" 73 Guy

New member, QRP+ 2
Ron -- good morning I have 2 x QRP+ rigs -- one to use and one for spares. The MIXer is almost a 'sacrifical' item in these rigs. Its fialiure is not unsusal. Its usually antenna static that kills them -- not some big lightening strike! There are several ways to mod the circuit to add protection once you get the blown mixer replaced. Yes you can replace the mixer with the SBL-1 and if I recall (its a long while since I did this) they are pin for pin compatible. The old mixer will be a bit of a struggle to remove from the PCB. I purchased a soldering iron with a built in solder sucker (for <?30) and it was a real benefit for this task. Once I had got the mixer far enough off the board, I cut the pins rather than struggle to take them all out together. I then removed the pins left in the pcb one at a time. Several peole have fitted IC socket recepticles so the new mixer can be 'plugged in' rather than soldered. This makes it MUCH easier to replace the next time :-) You will probably find the mixer is your main/only failure. I have a number of documents -- collected over the years --- that may help. I can email them to you. I have your email address from QRZ.com 73 Bruce G4ABX

New member,
Hi Group I’ve joined the QRP plus group because I’m in need of some i fo to fix a faulty QRP+ I picked up at a rally here in UK some while ago. It was offered as in ‘Good Working Order’ from a silent key sale. Sadly on trying it out, it was NOT GWO !. No signals received, although there is noise on RX. Very little TX power <100mW. It WILL receive a large signal from a sig gen at RX frequency (>100uV). Sigs at IF freq from sig gen are loud from the speaker. Reset after battery change didnt fix anything. Scope tests at L. O. plug give 1.5v p-p. I’m now thinking the MIXER-1 is faulty. I’m also thinking this component is now obsolete and hard to obtain. Can I simply replace the old mixer-1 with the more common SBL-1 mixer as a direct pin compatible part thanks for any help offered 73 de G4FBC

A (very) happy outcome 2
Thanks to advice from Guy and Jim's comments things are pretty well sorted out. It seems No.0889 has been updated to QRP Plus++ by Index Labs. with inductors replaced by MCL types; the 'special' MCL mixer, the K7SY mods with extra turn on the primary of L16 and the reduced value of R9 from 470 to 100R. I did replace the IRF510 and there was a small improvement but still only a few mW on 24 and 28MHz. Next I put an extra 2 turns on the secondary of L16 to bring the ratio back up a bit and also increased the feedback resistor R9. 500R or so increased output on the lower bands and higher values did the same from 18 to 28MHz.. As I just need 1 Watt on each of the 9 bands I settled for 1.6K . Much higher output can be achieved with different settings of R18 bias or R9. The set is working well. Many thanks for all the help. 73, John G0UCP

QRP Plus with low output 14
I bought an Index Laboratories QRP Plus at a club sale. It was supposed to be fine, but didn't receive and had zero output (on CW). After a big desoldering struggle I fitted a new SBL-1 (U2), which brought the receiver back to life. Unfortunately, the TX still didn't work. Back to the drawing board. The next stage was to replace the final PA transistor, which is on the lowest board. This is a IRF510 (Q9) and I ordered a few off Ebay. I fitted a new one and in tests I found that I could only get about 0.1W out (on CW) with the gate bias backed off fully anticlockwise. Power out should be about 5W. Anyway, that's as far as I have got. Any ideas guys?

Just Picked up S/N 0540 4
Just picked up one of these little gems at a hamfest this weekend. It probably hasn't been used is many years. S/N 0540 Seems to work fine, except for the memories seem all out of wack. Does it need a new battery? Just listening on 20 metes to lots of DX. -- Thanks and 73, Jim W7RY

Broken QRPPLus 6
Hi all, I owned teh QRPPlus before, sold it and then came back malfunctioning. So checked the radio and it was 'just' a flatcable so it went again. Now it is coming back to me complete 'dead' is the story. He is not in the house yet but is this a known situation with a known solution? First of all I will take it apart and check the radio for broken parts. Then put it together again to see if it will start. If it is 'software' is it possible to reload the software into the radio, what is the procedure and were can it be found? Best 73's Kees PA1CJT

PA replacement
Hi all I have a friend's QRP++ on my workbench. So far I have relaced the "blown" mixer by a SBL-1H and the RX is alive again. My friend was experiencing some troubles while trying to operate in SSB with very low power and distorted audio. I tried to adjust the bias of the IRF510 but unfortunately I did not get any improvements. I was thinking about the alternative of the DL-QRP-PA but it was no more available. Has anybody tried the QRP-Labs 10W linear amplifier?. Does it work properly?. My friend is an SSB fan and would like to be able to operate the QRP++ in SSB with a reasonable power. Any comments or suggestions will be more than welcome. 72/73 de Vicenc, EA3ADV

will not power up 6
Hi I am new to the group and trying to sell some eq for a silent keys XYL. He has a QRP plus but when I apply 12v it pulls the PS down to 3v and the radio does not turn on. I have tried 2 different 12v PS that are both rated at 4Amps . I should have know it had an issue because the fuse was missing. I tried a cpu reset by applying power with the MEM button pushed. Also I tried disconnecting the 4 RCA plugs going to the top PCB board one at a time and all four off. The radio will not power on. It does not blow the fuse. I have changed the battery on the second PCB. My guess its a short pulling the input 12v down to 3V. I dont want to spend a lot of time on this radio. Any suggestions or should I just sell it for parts. Tim K9US (silent key - KD9KN rick)

Good morning and good evening to all 13
Dear members of QRP Plus Group, I'm a new comer, Katsuhiko Hirai, just joined to this group. I got QRP Plus Ver.1 last month. I'm trying to restart my ham radio hobby after very long QRT since 1985. It seems for me to be young teen-age days just noticed Ham radio. I'm going to build my HF antennas soon and modify my QRP Plus, though my finger playing of CW might be so poor than ever. Have a nice new day and evening time, Best regards, Katsuhiko Hirai -- Katsuhiko Hirai <mxc04040@...> in Ikoma, Nara, Japan. QRP ++ [NOT] has been repaired 3
Hi All, I promised to report out on fixing the radio I purchased from Wes. It is done for the most part. It has taken a while since I had a second cerebral stroke on October 22,2021. I have worked to learn to walk again. A bit dizzy still. I am using ham radio as a method to recover.. See my QRZ. Anyway.. here is the fixed unit I purchased from Wes Bolin here. I still need to do some final final adjustments but they are simple. Contact me if there are any questions. It took me a while.. but I got it done! 65 1/2 basically healthy except for cerebral areas. Here you go! https://n1gmm.com/mw/index.php/QRP_%2B_Rig_Repair See what you think! N1GMM Guy

QRP Plus with blown C41 on Transmitter board 3
Hi folks, I'm trying to help out a friend with his QRP Plus rig. Power was applied in reverse polarity and it blew C41 on the XMTR board. It looks like a tantalum cap but it was mostly destroyed so there is no way to determine the value from looking at it. I have the XMR PCB board layout and the schematic. The layout shows C41 just behind C39. However, on Figure 18 of the schematic, there is no mention of C41 at all. Instead, it shows two C39's flanking D7. One is a 220uF electrolytic which I see on that board. The other C39 shown on the schematic lists it as 10NF. I'm pretty sure that should be labeled as C41 on the schematic. Assuming I am correct, I also question the value listed on the schematic, as 10NF (nano farads), or .01MF or 10k PF, etc. Can anyone help with a value of C41? Thanks in advance, John

New Project the Repair of a QRP ++ rig I purchased for a song 2
Hi All, NOTE: I mis-labeled the Project. This is a QRP+ not a QRP++ It has the old style (but still very good) SBL-1 Mixers... I will conntinue My name is Guy and I have posted but few times. I thought it might be fun to post a series of notes about the repair of a QRP++ rig that I purchased for a song from K5APL (Mr. Wes Bolin on this group). I will be posting most of the updates on my wiki site (saves storage here and costs) with pictures and other things. It was reported the radio is hard of hearing and the initial state appears to be mixers were changed out. I have the old mixer as well and will be testing it.. there has been some discussion on the QRP ++ on the mixers.. It appears initially that the QRP ++ has had its mixer switched out from the original to an MCL-SBL-1 (both mixers are now the same). This radio has been thru several hands. I do not know the S/N yet as the unit is completely disassembled and I have not booted it. Initially for those who want to know a little bit more on mixers here is a nice article. https://www.robkalmeijer.nl/techniek/electronica/radiotechniek/hambladen/qst/1993/12/page32/ More as I put the radio back together and find a detailed description of whats going on. Here is the link to my wiki.. https://n1gmm.com/mw/index.php?title=QRP_%2B_Rig_Repair&action=submit Hope all are well. I am going to have fun with this. 73 Guy
