#QMX+ ongewenste eeprom initialisatie 5
73's Ad. PE1BOL

QMX and digital modes with Win 8 and Win 10 4
Hello! Just wanted to describe the situation with my QMX. I've installed the latest beta 04. 1. Win 10 laptop has found three COM ports without problem. WJST-X and JS8-Call work fine. WinLink/VARA works OK except one problem: during TX QMX receive very low audio signal via USB cable. So it doesn't transmit any material signal. That is why I have to use speakerphone in VARA soundcard settings for output signal instead. Then everything is OK. 2. Win 8 tablet with 8" screen. Had to install STM driver and manually "show" to the system where to find drivers for all three COM ports and all three QMX devices that the system saw at the beginning. After that it started to see three new COM ports and one audio device named QMX. Exactly as it is with Win 10 laptop. So I was sure that now everything should be OK. BUT it is not. WJST-X and JS8-Call doesn't work. No CAT control. In spite of the fact that all settings are exactly the same as for Win 10. WinLink/Vara works but with slightly different settings than Win 10 laptop. And it has the same problem with very low audio signal via USB cable. So I use speakerphone in VARA soundcard settings for output signal as well. But at least WinLink works... Hans, is it possible to make some audio input signal (through USB cable) regulation in menu? In future firmware updates? Or may be you can reproduce this problem with input signal strength and find the solution? Thanks! Sergey UB3AZK

QCX-mini LCD top row is blocks, bottom row is blank 7
Hi, I just completed a build of the QCX-mini. When powering the device with either 7.5V or 12V battery I get LCD top row is blocks, bottom row is blank and nothing else. I have checked throughout for solder bridges and found none, I also checked for continuity with digital multi meter and found the IC2 (ATmega328P) to be connected ok with the ic socket and also with the board sockets with no bent pins and proper intal alingment. Also continuity is fine for the LCD. IC2 has clock on pin 10 of 4MHz (measured with logic probe), IC2 also has voltages on pins 2,3,4 and 5. I'm not sure how to fully test IC2 to see if all is good or what else I should look for in the circuit to spot the issue. Any help would be appreciated.

#qmx SSB Firmware beta 1_01_004 release 55 #qmx
Hi all I updated the SSB beta testing webpage of the brave, here: https://qrp-labs.com/qmxp/ssbbeta.html and released firmware version 1_01_004 to it. I did not solve problems with SSB phase distortion calibration, but I added a couple of additional failsafes. I am inclined to stop calling it beta. But I welcome your opinions on this. I know there is more to do, there will always be more to do... I think I would be more comfortable calling it the official version and moving onward. Having it all properly documented in the operating manual and all in one place would simplify things and reduce confusion. What do you think? These are the changes: Bug fix: Incorrect PA voltage display on the Diagnostics screen due to 57 / 10 being rounded to 5, as discussed in this forum. Change TX color in the diagnostics screen from red to blue, to avoid confusion since red things are errors. Added two more USB Virtual COM serial ports. QMX now presents itself as a USB hub with a 24-bit stereo 48ksps USB sound card and three USB Virtual COM serial ports attached. The advantage of this is that you can be running WSJT-X connected to a serial port, then run a terminal emulator connected to a different serial port; then you can make adjustments to the gain for example, to get the WSJT-X SNR meter at your desired level. You can also use other tools like "Input analysis" in the "PC and CAT" menu, which displays incoming audio tones from the PC; previously this could not be used unless you used VOX for Tx/Rx control. The CAT monitor can also be useful to be able to monitor incoming CAT commands and responses in realtime on one port, with CAT running on another. And going forward, for developers who wish to experiment with BASIC scripting, it will also be important to have multiple serial COM ports. Added CAT LC; command to retrieve LCD contents: it returns a 32-character string, whose contents are whatever is on the LCD at that instant. Any custom characters are replaced by spaces. The only exception to this is the VFO indicator which is replaced by an 'A' or 'B' character. Added CAT commands SA; which returns the AGC dB value (dB of attenuation applied by the AGC system). Added CAT command SM; which returns the S-meter value. This value is in dB. To convert to S-units, divide by 6. Added CAT command PC; which returns the power level during TX. The value is in tenths of a Watt. For example response PC45; would mean 4.5W. Added CAT command SW; which returns the SWR meter reading during TX. The value is in units of hundredths. For example response SW142; would mean the SWR measured is 1.42. Added CAT command SS to get/set SSB input source. Valid values are 0 (USB from PC), 1 (Two-tone test generator) or 2 (External microphone). I migrated AF, RF, Image, LPF and Test ADC I/Q terminal tools to the standard ASCII-art graphing tool I developed. Previously every tool had its own piece of code, which of course were copy-and-pasted from each other and largely similar. The advantage is also that the standard ASCII-art graphing tool I developed, also has an interface to display a miniature version of the graphs on a 20 x 16-pixel canvas, shown in a 4 x 2 character section at the right-hand side of the LCD. This means all these sweep tools are now also available on the LCD and buttons, without needing to use the terminal emulator to see them. They are all under the "Hardware tests" menu. I created a new tool called "PA mod. test" specifically to check the operation of amplitude modulator. This is under the "Hardware tests" menu both on the terminal interface and the LCD user interface. Attached is an example of a correctly functioning amplitude modulator. The x-axis shows the DAC value, the y-axis shows the measured PA voltage. A correct result is a straight line that goes (almost) from zero to (almost) the QMX supply voltage; a 12V unit will saturate at about a DAC value of around 2500 as shown. The Hardware tests / Diagnostics screen is now also available on the LCD interface. Here there are 6 screens, which you scroll between by using the Tune knob. You i

Feature Request List?
Hi Hans, Is there a maintained Feature Request list available somewhere where we can check if what we¡¯d like to see has already been asked for, and perhaps add a vote? I know posts can get lost in the volume, and I expect that is why there was no answer on my question on having variable TX power available as a setting (/g/QRPLabs/message/143397), but I don¡¯t want to bug anyone, so if there was a tracker we could look at, it might save you getting duplicate requests or being bugged by people like me :-) Love the pre-built QMX, am going to get a QMX+ kit to have a go at¡ 73, Stefan MI0PYN

QMX SSB internal mic? 13 #ssb #qmx
Hello, I tested the internal microphone in the menu microphone test. Nice. Now a question: once the beta firmware results in a release, what will be the way to transmit? All controls seem to have already a function and there seems to be nothing left for the PTT function. Jindra

QMX: C107 burned 10
Hi all, Yesterday, I finally found the time to finish building my second QMX (Rev.2, 10m - 20m). Initial setup was easy, and after loading the latest firmware, all tests ran smoothly. Today was its first use, which was also successful with a few FT8 QSOs. But after about 3 hours, the QMX said goodbye with a loud pop. C107 looked like the picture below: https://www.bitquell.de/nextcloud/index.php/s/cf9tbs844aW2mgq I can't identify a cause for this defect. The QMX is built for 9V and was powered by the stabilized 9V output of a TelentCell LF4100. The antenna was a precisely tuned vertical. Will replacing C107 be enough? I'm worried about Q107. Could the burn that can be seen in the picture have been caused by C107, or is Q107 also defective? 73, Joerg DG0JDE

Available Hand Mics for QMX SSB ? 83
Do any of the commercially available hand microphones for existing QRP radios work with the new QMX SSB? Or perhaps pre-wired adapters for those mics already in the marketplace? Bill W3WJ

CW Filters 29
I just upgraded to the 027 firmware on my QMX, from 018. Being able to select the CW filter is very nice, but I don't understand how to enable cascading or compounding of two CW filters. The manual says there are two CW filters - 300 and 500 Hz, yet the submenu shows 8 filters, ranging from 50 Hz to 500 Hz. Thanks and 73, Steve, N2IC

qmx SSB Firmware beta 1_01_004 release + WSJT-X 7
Hello ... After installing 004, successfully, I've got 3 new com ports, 3, 9, & 10. All of them allow CAT control of the WSJT software. Decodes are happening and I have made a number of US and DX contacts today. But, and there almost always is one, after about 8-10 minutes, the new com ports "go away" and WSJT stops working and wants connections repaired. Shutting off the QMX+ and turning it back on restores the ports, for another 8-10 minutes. Anybody else seen this behavior after updating to 004ssb? The radio plays nicely with WSJT for hours at a time with 003ssb. Thanks, Dick, K5AND

Circuit description around PS and its supply¡ 8
Evening all I have a question regarding the operation of the power control around the PA transistors¡does the DAC drive Q512-5 and therefore Q507 when the unit is in receive, meaning the PA supply is present on Q503-6 all the time? My unit¡¯s poorly PA draws excessive current (~2A or so) in receive and the transistors get too warm; I have spares on the way but now I¡¯m wondering about Q507¡ Tra all!

QMX and WinLink/WARA HF settings 14
Hello! I am trying to find right settings to start work with WinLink and VARA HF threw QMX. CAT connection is OK. The only problem here is that when I choose some Gateway channel QMX always switches to USB mode from DiGi. But it is not a big deal to return back to DiGi manually. The main problem is that when I start connection with the chosen channel QMX shows two dots as TX status. Which means that audio level from PC is too low. But I've put it to maximum. And everything works fine with WSJT-X and JS8Call. So problem is definitely with some WinLink VARA HF settings? Can smb help? Hans, did you try to use WinLink with QMX?

My QMX is turning off, when I reduce voltage under 10V 10
My QMX is working perfect with 12V, but I would like to try 9V to reduce power on FT8. By lowering voltage with a regulated power supply, qmx is going off at <10V (qmx seems not to be completely off, but there is no audio and no display). By increasing voltage again, QMX is starting again at >10V (without pressing "On/Off knob). At exactly 10V QMX is alternately going on and off. The minimal voltage in protection settings is 7V, why isn't it working with 9V? Vy 73 and thanks in advance, Stojan, DK4SR

Question: Does the power icon go on and off when you are sending CW? 4
Hi all, Just got a fresh QMX+ assembled and finally got it on the air. After a couple days of fussing I finally got FT8 working on WSJT+. Im small tuner from my ft817 which is manual to tune. All good and the power icon shows full power as FT8 does its thing. On CW the decoder works and the keyer sometimes goes to sleep (wont work) when sending. A power on/off brings it back. My question is when sending CW should the power icon be 'pulsing' when it transmits a character? The sidetone is working but I cant tell if it Is transmitting. Any help? -- Charlie C. - K2CMC LICW/SKCC/NAQCC

QMX+ with WA3TFS amplifier 31
I recently built the WA3TFS linear amplifier featured in the March QST. The build went very well and with my old MFJ 20M QRP CW radio, 3W in gives 20W out with a peak 4A draw. So, I tried to interface my QMX+ to it and was surprised to see the QMX+ stop transmitting after the first dit. It would recover after a time and would transmit fine by itself or through the amp but it didn¡¯t like it all when I activated the amp. The firmware hasn¡¯t been upgraded in awhile so I¡¯m not sure if this has already been addressed. I¡¯m not sure the RF detection is maybe not fast enough ?? Any ideas appreciated. 73, Jamie WB4YDL

QMX PA popped. :-( 2
Afternoon all, Well, it was all going too well. I had been using the 003 SSB firmware with good success and decided to flash the 004 update...this went well but I decided to run a calibration cycle and it got about 75% of the way through and the current draw jumped up with the attendant untoward smell emanating from the unit. I suspect the finals have failed. This was running on 10 V from my bench PSU with a proper dummy load so I'm not perplexed as to why this would have occurred. Darn.

CW Practice / Rag Chew 9
On 4/21/25 I had a CW practice / rag chew session on 20 meters. I worked no stations: Conditions were OK. SSN = 108, SFI = 156, A = 14, K = 5. I heard several very weak stations calling but they were too weak to work. My next CW practice session will be April 23 at 16:00 EDT / 20:00 UTC on 20 meters. Anyone and everyone is welcome. This practice is intended for operators who are new to CW or they need some practice. IT DOES NOT MATTER HOW POOR YOUR CW IS. Mistakes are OK. Poor fists are OK. Slow speed is OK. Really slow speed is OK. This practice is meant for you to improve your CW. I will do my best to adjust to your skill level. Operate at any power level. If several stations show up, I will operate as a round-table control station. I will do it as a round-table so everyone gets a chance to transmit. Please listen to my directions. Details: Date - April 23 2025 Time - 16:00 EDT 20:00 UTC Band - 20 Meters How to find me - I will find a clear frequency and call CQ. Go to the Reverse Beacon Network and search for my call sign AB8DF. That will tell you what frequency I am on. Tune your station to that frequency and if you hear me give me a call. If there is a QSO in progress, please wait for a break in the action. Then send your callsign. If I hear you, I will invite you to join the QSO and start a round-table QSO. Reply to this email if you have questions. IT DOES NOT MATTER HOW POOR CW IS Ed AB8DF
