Firmware nightmare — gibberish (!) help needed
11
I attempted to update the firmware using my MacBook Pro. I followed the manual as follows: I navigated to the firmware menu choice and clicked "TUNE" Then I used a USB-C cable to connect to my Mac, and the drive appeared on my desktop no problem Then I copied the new file (yes, unzipped, named "1_01_003.QMX") to the drive It copied over no problem; and then it rebooted into screens that look like the screenshots below I have a second QMX, but I'm too spooked to try it with that one now! Has anyone ever seen this before? Is there a way out? I'd rather not have to open the radio (I bought it assembled). Help! :) 73, Randy K7RAN

Low current BIAS SMPS
7
Hi, I’ve just finished my QMX rev 4 build. Unfortunately I get in the diagnostics with PTT signal: —ON— and rf output: off a Bias Smps current of only 4.5mA. Running it with output ON I get a Bias of 0.0mA. Can you give me a hint what to check? Thank you so much! 73 Martin DO6MTH

QMX+ TCXO calibration using PPS
2
AIUI adding the GPS to the QMX+ will allow the PPS signal from the GPS to calibrate the TXCO. This seems mostly be for the beacon modes but does the calibration apply for normal operation as well? And how can you tell? Does the System Configuration - TCXO frequency setting get updated? Hope that makes sense. Chris, G5CTH

QMX + Backlight dimming

Does anyone have an easy safe method of dimming the backlight on the QMX+ Perhaps changing/adding a resistor. The bright backlight is fine in a well let room or outdoors but in my dimly lit bat/ham cave it’s hard on the eyes. Thanks, Dave

Damon, blinking "6" only in TX mode or also in RX mode before try to TX or after try to TX? For TX mode 250 mA is much to low and the power supply will hit the limit. When the power supply is going below 6 V the QMX is disabling the PA, the current is below 250 mA again and the voltage comes up to the value from before. (Such a fast down and up of the supply voltage is dangerous for the QMX.) 12V rail at 6.68Vdc How much external voltage? 6.68 V in which mode (TX, RX)? Good VFO clock output from CLK0 & CLK1 into IC503. I guess you mean IC403. Good and expected values shown from IC’s 501-503. Like described in QMX QMX_plus PA problems, broken BS170? With or without BS170? PA’s dropping 980mV as measured at T501. Dropping in which way? 980 mV DC or AC rms or AC pp or what? Measured at which point of T501. What is your oscilloscope showing at the drains of the BS170 (AC and DC, RX mode and TX mode)? 73 Ludwig

Putty
3
Greetings QMX+ Fans, I am having an issue getting the virtual serial portion of the USB interface to work properly. Am running 01_01_003 on the QMX+. THANKS HANS, SSB WORKS GREAT! From Putty in a WIN 10 environment as Administrator (which i know is working, as I can SSH into another computer on the network). All the serial port information matches (as determined from Device Manager), COM port Number, Speed, number bits, etc. I open Putty, get the terminal screen and type FA, nothing happens. No matter what i type nothing happens. See attached. I have tried it of several different ports with the same results, no control by PUTTY. Would really like to get this working to do the sweeps, etc. I am quite certain the connection to the QMX+ is working properly as when it is powered down the COM device is removed from the manager, and the sound card is working and can be operated from WSJT-X. I also cannot get the CAT control to work, tried RIG as Kenwood TS440, and QMX+ in the new HAMLIB. No Joy. Am i missing something? Any help appreciated. Kind Regards, George DU9GT

QMX+ Rev3 and Rev1 interchangeability

I have ordered another QMX+ kit. I assume it will be Rev3. I have a Rev 1 front panel board already constructed. Can I use this Rev1 front panel board on a Rev3 main board? Greg, ZL4GW

74ACT08 damaged and LCD is all blocks
26
Long story short, I managed to damage my fresh built QMX+ by trusting a USB-C PD power supply too much... The symptoms are that I'm still able to power it up and the display is normal before SMPS kicks in. When the controller starts to use SMPS, the LCD goes all blocks so I guess the 5V rail is damaged. Visual inspection shows 74ACT08 is damaged as well. The terminal application is still working (so 3.3V is fine?), but if I try to access the hardware diagnosis function, QMX+ crashes and the USB connection is lost. The steady power consumption after SMPS bootstrap is about 22W so something is probably shorted. I have an unbuilt QMX+ board that I can take components from. Really appreciate anyone could help me narrow down the components to check/repair. I was trying to use QMX+ SSB to work some WPX SSB contest stations... Really wish I could still make it... Many thanks! 73 de N6HAN Zhenxing Han

Firmware nightmare — ibberish (!) help needed
At one point, the number of data lines used by the display increased, I think from 4 to 8. Paul -- AI7JR On Apr 1, 2025, 19:58 -0700, Randy K7RAN via groups.io <padawer@...>, wrote:

Windows WSJT-X audio input level adjustment
19
Hi All I am new to QMX+ digi modes and need some guidance. I have built a QMX+ that works like a charm, but I am struggling to get the audio input level in WSJT-X to 30dB, on some bands it is in th red at 6/7dB. I have the volume in the audio mixer at max and the master volume in Settings --> sounds set to 100. I am running windows version 10 and do not know what else to adjust. Is there another windows setting or do I need to alter somethin on the QMX+. Any advice would be welcome Many thanks Will, M0LGW

Help with QMX+ on CW
10
I received my QMX+ unit preassembled a few days ago. I just want to use it for CW, be able to hear the sidetone, transmit, receive, use the automated messaging to call CQ. So far I am not getting any sidetone, no transmit that I can detect, my paddle doesn't seem to respond (I'm set to Iambic A). Power is a 12v Bienno, voltage protection is set to 13v. My EFHW shows 1.0 to 1.2 SWR when tested with the RigExpert. Is there a list somewhere that tells "here are the settings you need, to make this thing actually work for CW" ? There are soooo many menu items and I must be doing something terribly wrong. Thank you all. 73 KD8ZM

QMX+ SSB Success
I'm happy to report that the Firmware Version 1_01_003 is working well on my radio. Audio receive is excellent, sensitivity as well. Transmit function got the job done. Mic gain is 60 and mic compression set to 10. I just completed first QSO running 2 watts, from my SE PA location to Campbellsville, KY ... about 750 miles. I got a 55 report. Sent a legit 59. The mic was the one from Erik, AD7OV. Though I'm a mostly CW op, I enjoyed the experience and will continue to experiment. Many thanks, Hans, for this fantastic addition to the features of your great QRP radio design. Best 72 and 73, Bill W3WJ

QMX+ Right button Diagnosing as "on"
9
Hello, I've just finished building my QMX+ and when I go into the diagnostic screen, I noticed that the "Right btn:" Is indicating "Press" at all times. When I press any of the other buttons it moves up to another button press. I began to troubleshoot this a bit and I started by removing the display from the rest of the QMX+. Then the press goes away. From there I tested the buttons one by one. They are functioning correctly. When I test the resistance in the circuit, I noted that I see 3.3kohms, 6.8kohms, and 13kohms... which seems to line up with what I'd expected based on the schematic. Can anyone offer any more troubleshooting advice? Thank you. Brandon

MS5351M subtle failures / diagnosis
Just leaving this here for anyone fault finding Just dealt with my second MS5351M 'subtle failure' in a couple of years First was in a QCX +TCXO where after 20 minutes or so running the Transmitted WSPR tone degraded into wide band noise that amazingly did still include enough of the right signal to get a WSPR report and show the usual power output to the antenna. Several people around the world helpfully pointed the problem out as their spectrum displays were in a mess and I very quickly shut it down ...... A spray of cooler on the 5351 paused the problem. Fixed by replacing the MS5351. Second just now was in my U3S with receiver option (SI5351 board and QRP Labs TCXO) that was starting to emit random audio noise in receive at a high level once warmed up. The CLK1 56.3824 MHz Park /Receive LO carrier in this case was sniffed for but not recognisable on another receiver but a noise spectrum a few KHz wide was filling the vacancy. A quick sense check of removing the BPF, swapping power supplies, moving/cleaning interconnector pins, switches etc did nothing, and the transmit signal (CLK0 14MHz remained pure). Again cooling off the 5351 area restored operation for a few minutes . . and replacing the 5351 oscillator board completely (for convenience) fixed it. (Not dug deeper. As the WSPR TX modulation was always fine and the regulator seemed happy enough I think its the 5351 again. . ) Both radios have been used in 24/7 beacon operation and their only faults so far in 10,000's of hours have been misbehaving MS5351's. So just leaving this note that they can fail subtly, don't assume part working means all working . .
