Windows WSJT-X audio input level adjustment
Hi All
I am new to QMX+ digi modes and need some guidance.
I have built a QMX+ that works like a charm, but I am struggling to get the audio input level in WSJT-X to 30dB, on some bands it is in th red at 6/7dB. I have the volume in the audio mixer at max and the master volume in Settings --> sounds set to 100. I am running windows version 10 and do not know what else to adjust. Is there another windows setting or do I need to alter somethin on the QMX+. Any advice would be welcome
?
Many thanks

Here is something to try in windows to make sure you are really adjusting the proper input device:
1) right-click on the little speaker icon on the toolbar, and select 'open sound settings'
2) on the right-hand side of the Sound window that comes up, under 'Related Settings', choose "Sound Control Panel" - this brings up the old windows control panel that lets you see and adjust settings directly for all devices
3) choose the 'recording' tab at the top
4) scroll down to the "3-QMX Transceiver" digital audio interface and select it, then click the 'properties' button
5) in the properties panel that comes up, click on the 'levels' tab, and make sure it is at 100% and not muted.
?
Two other things to check:
1) you really have the QMX+ device selected in the WSJT-X audio settings - mine reverted once to my laptop microphone, when QMX+ wasn't connected, and was picking up that signal instead of the QMX+
2) you don't have I/Q mode enabled on QMX+

Thanks Stan,
I have had a look and the 'levels' tab and it is at 100%. I have also checked the WSJT-X and it still says 'Digital Audio Interface (3- QMX Transciever). I have checked the QMX+ I/Q mode and it is disabled.
?
For info these are the leels I see in WSJT-X v2.6.1
160m 4dB
80m 47dB
60m 30dB
40m 11dB
30m 1dB
20m 30dB
17m 20dB
15m 23dB
12m 13dB
10m 14dB
6m 5dB
?
I built the rig as a kit and have configured it for 12V operation and I have a 11.7V supply, so I suspect I may have something wrong..?
?
Thanks for getting back
Will

I don't have access to my Operations Manual at this moment, but ...

In the band Configuration menu in Terminal mode (Putty connected) there is a parameter for relative audio output gain per band. It's right near the top of the listings. You can bump those values up to get more out into the WSJT-X program.? Close WSJT-X Open Putty, select Serial, change the COM port number to the current number assigned to the QMX+ and click Open. A new Putty terminal window should open with only a cursor showing. Hit Enter on the PC. The main menu for the QMX+ should appear. You might need to press Enter twice.? Choose Band Configuration. Then .... Use the arrow keys to move left or right to a band and up and down arrows to the individual line item listings. For the 'gain' parameter you'll need to backspace over the current entry and then type in the new desired value. Use Control-Q to back out to the main menu listing and then select Exit Terminal. Then close the terminal window and restart WSJT-X. Under different conditions of reception signal receive strength you might need to dial some back to reduce overload into say WSJT-X or FLDigi. Hope this helps GREG?

Yes, there is the band config menu option.? I haven't had to use it. The bands will vary greatly in % audio depending on activity and noise, so you shouldn't expect the same on all.? I get 40-60% on 20m with full activity, and it works great. BUT while I was checking out settings, my QMX somehow is in a mode where the audio-out in Digi mode is not happening correctly.? Almost no audio. So I wonder if that is happening to you.? So also try this that worked for me (temporarily until I find the problem):? Set your QMX to CW mode, and set the CW filter selection to 'off'.?? Suddenly that makes my audio appear at full volume via the QMX interface (and out the speaker).? You may want to
tune 'high' for digi by the amount of your CW offset (for me that is 650Hz), e.g. 14.07465 to be centered.?
I don't know if this is your problem, but it worked for me.??? I don't think I have a setting wrong, and the only difference between 'digi' and 'cw' is firmware, so maybe I need to do a factory reset to get the 'digi' functionality correct again. Almost no audioOk I found my problem, nothing serious, and probably won't help you - I was off frequency - because last night I listened to some SSB on 40m, so I had switched the QMX to LSB and CW-R.? I did switch them both back to USB and CW normal before I tested WSJT-X, but I found that I was just off frequency by 3KHz - so somehow the change back to USB didn't 'take'.? It showed USB in the menu, but I had to toggle it back to LSB and back to USB, then it correctly switched the mode.? I have changed USB/LSB modes before with no problem - so I wonder if this happened because I changed both LSB and CW-R at the same time?? Anyway, it is all back to normal now. Stan |
Hi all,
Interesting thread as I too have had issues with my Win10 laptop and WSJT-X and QMX+ lately.
It all *used* to work totally fine until... I dont know what....
?
Right now I have done ALL of the things mentioned in this thread - including serial putty into the config and trying to change the audio levels per band, double checking everything set up in WSJT-X and Windows sound interface.
?
My symptoms: ? very low audio into WSJT-x, ?like < 10dB ?(red) and almost no signals seen the waterfall and none decoded.
?
*** Here is the strange thing: ?Even on my MacBook Air WSJT-x behaves exactly the same *** ?extremely low input levels.
?
*** And another strange thing: ?HDSDR SDR software on the Windows machine and CubicSDR on the MacBook Air work perfectly ***
?
In other words,, ?since I/Q is enabled on the QMX+ I see the expected spectrum displays on both SDR apps and can hear the decoded ?USB / CW just fine.
?
BUT... not enough audio input to WSJTx...
So what changed ? ?Last thing I did was disable some of the CW filters in the QMX+ menu..thats all. ?But I am in DIGI mode for FT8 anyways... and even if I set it to "None" in CW bandwidth - which turns off the cw filters - no diff.
?
I have wsjtx v2.6.1, i have uninstalled it, ?reinstalled it, rebooted pc and QMX+... im out of ideas.

Mark, are you trying to operate WSJT-x with QMX I/Q mode enabled?
?
That won't work.
?
You have to leave I/Q mode OFF in order for WSJT-x to get standard audio from QMX / QMX+.? ?That is an easy mistake to make if you are also using SDR software with your QMX.
?
If you really want to leave IQ mode on, you need to use an SDR program to demodulate the QMX I/Q data into a 3KHz or 4kHz USB audio signal, then use an audio pipe from the SDR program to send the audio data to WSJT-x.?
?

开云体育I would think I/Q would have to be disabled, to work with WSJT-X... (Just checking!) Paul -- Paul -- AI7JR |

.it would be nice to have WSJTx take I/Q samples directly ....Mark, Back in the good old days of XP there were IQ versions if WSPR that did just that. RX/TX with soundcard SDRs. (Do not work with current Windows). Then it was abandoned, pleas for development ignored and WSJT-X was born. 73 Alan G4ZFQ |
If you recently used the QMX+ system menu to switch from USB to LSB, that could be the problem.? If you did, and it is set back to USB, try setting it to LSB again, exiting the menus, then go back in and set it to USB.? I had one occurrence of changing back to USB not 'taking', and had to toggle it again.? Perhaps a firmware error, and perhaps associated with me changing CW-R mode at the same time. |
