QCU Shack Clock

Never could find a suitable "super capacitor" to add to this excellent GPS clock. Plenty of the exact caps at Mouser but the shipping is always nuts on a low priority project.
?
Recently received another "life-time supply" of leaded CR2032 button cell holders so I could restore the clock feature in my new-to-me IC-7300 transceiver. I reasoned that since that worked the same should work in the QCU andbit does!
?
The only thing that MUST be done is add a diode to prevent the circuit trying to charge the cell. I had a sack full of SMD diodes from another ptoject that were used for this.
?
This scheme works! The clock was unplugged after it had successfully relocked on the satellites and left unpowered for half an hour. The display was fully populated and the time was dead on almost instantly!
?
I will supply pictures on this page if it would help anyone.

Let us know how long your battery lasts. It should be a good long while before we hear from you. I think if I remember, the super cap only lasts about 12 hrs ish.

I would guess? it would be similar to the CR2032 clock battery mod for the IC-7300. The current drain is so small the battery is limited to its shelf life. Have no idea about clock and GPS current drain is but rest assured I will yell when this thing quits!

12 hours is fine. ?The GPS technical information that’s being cached is going to have expired after that. ??

Hi Bruce,
Thats good to know .
So after 12hr with this battery mod, I assume? the clock would come up instantly, but the info might be dated until it finishes a refresh cycle at some point?
?
Honestly, mine only takes a minute to come up from cold start without the super cap or battery mod. Im not usually finished firing up the rest of the station by that time anyway.?
