QMX build completed .... kind of

I completed my QMX kit today with some issues still outstanding. It is a great little kit and I enjoyed the build. I seemed to have the most trouble with the the rotary encoders of all things. I broke one of the tabs at the base with nothing left to solder a lead on to. I tried to expose a bit of the tab and solder to it, but no go. As a result the rig did not power on. I had trouble with all of those tabs reaching the board for a good solder connection, so decided to just use wires to connect them all. Not an elegant solution really. Anybody have any suggestions / tips for installing these? I've ordered some replacements and will address it again.
?
(Of course ... since I had those parts coming figured I may as well add a QMX+ ! Ha.)

Yes? the tabs on those encoders are fragile and you shouldn't flex them more than once, or risk breaking them. So I usually push them down carefully to where I want them and then use a little piece of a left over capacitor lead through the hole when I solder them in place. I want to make sure I have a sturdy electrical connection and I don't care what it looks like.

Thanks. I will give that a try moving forward!

And on the QMX, it is very easy to get a solder bridge between the lead and the encoder case, since they are so close, which causes a short.? So I like to wrap a layer of Kapton tape around the silver body of the encoder to help prevent that.
