Cell phone speaker element use

Most cell phone speakers sound pretty good for their size. Does anyone have any experience using a speaker out of a defunct cellphone for projects?

Hi Ken
I have used tiny oval speakers out of laptops. These are modular back sealed units and sound not too bad. Four ohm so a 386 does not get too loud, but that’s OK. ?Keeps peace in the family.

That’s an interesting idea. I wonder how well that would work. I have a feeling that they sound good due to sound tunnels and such in the phones. But certainly worth a shot, they are designed for big sound with an efficient power draw.?

yep, I strongly suspect not only do they rely on the precise hardware layout inside the phone, but they will be driven with some quite serious waveform shaping (equalisation etc) in order to cater for their most likely very non-flat frequency response. ?So do not be surprised if they sound pretty bad once extracted from a phone ;-)

I wonder if that hardware could be contained within a speaker "module" and the entire thing extracted?

Yes, and? laptop speakers as well.

Small speakers are not independent of the acoustics of the mounting.
Those that have built in mounting (laptop) are less fussy but cellphone
speakers the case is part of the acoustic package.

They do have a significant size advantage.? Really helps if small
is important.
