SOLVED: QMX Receives but does not transmit

Greg, thank you for your help. I hooked up my QRPGuys power meter and we quickly found, using CW key, that the QMX was indeed transmitting at about 5 watts! We then worked on the WSJT-X issue and I also tried FLDIGI. We found that the Windows computer default audio (i.e. Windows system sounds) were configured for the QMX rather than the default laptop sound system. We could then see SWR readings on the QMX display when FT8 was transmitting, but no power reading.?We eventually found that the Windows sound setting (volume) for the QMX was at about 50%. When we raised it to 100%, WOO HOO we saw QMX transmitting as expected. PSKReporter also verified that FT8 was now working. And Gary Decker made his FT8 contact.

Similarly, FLDIGI seems to be transmitting at very low power. CAT control (using FLRIG) is working fine. We had enough for the day but now I speculate that we need to raise the Windows sound volume setting for FLDIGI. Microsoft sure doesn't make their sound settings easy to find and use. Should FLDIGI work with the QMX for all modes (specifically CW, PSK31, RTTY)?

Thanks Roy K2RMA

Great.

I've been fiddling with Fldigi but haven't had success.
I read in another post to set the power output level at the bottom right to 6. Isn't working for me but I've probably got something else set wrong.

I'm pretty sure that the frequency shift modes won't work, like PSK, but I've seen where others have had success getting RTTY to work. I'll try that at some point.?

I'm trying to get a new MKmini I just got working with MP40. Had it sending at one point but it was not sending the characters correctly. Lost the bubble and can't get it working at all now, even just a simple 'tune'.

Time to sleep on it and try again tomorrow. ?

Greg and others,

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

First of all the QMX will only do digital modes that are single tone. PSK is multi-tone, multiple tones at the same time. Using fldigi, HRD etc. the QMX will do most of the common digital modes like Thor, Olivia, DominoEX, FSQ, RTTY, Contestia, MFSK and maybe one or two more, HOWEVER starting with firmware 007 Hans made a change that broke fldigi from doing any of the modes listed above if you used TxID. It can't handle the short dropout of audio between the ID and the rest of the transmission. There is an oddity also that without using TxID it will do Thor and some others, but not all including RTTY. It's all issues with the firmware and how it handles audio and PTT. Go back to firmware 006 and they all work.

I've and others have reported these issues multiple times, but so far no fix. It does FT8 just fine.

Was this issue with RTTY in fldigi not working on QMX ever fixed? I was playing around with it appears to transmit for a little bit then stops. I have tried with and without the TXid.

Just tested and no, with firmware 017 RTTY still does not work. Also Olivia and Contestia do not work either. Back in firmware 006 they all worked.

Weirdly, MFSK works about half the time for me in fldigi with my QMX and RTTY it will sometimes transmit a few tones then stop.

MFSK 4, 8, 11 seem to work FB for me though I've not had a QSO using it yet. MFSK 16 and 22 seem to fail on the first transmit then are ok after that. Above 22 do not seem to work at all. Momentary transmit then no more even with multiple tries.

The list of modes I posted a bit ago was correct except that Olivia and Contestia do not work with firmware 017.

Hello, I tested how QMX behaves using a web application I am working on, which produces CW.

I set audio output from browser to QMX, set audio volume to 100% and set audio volume in my app also to at least 90%.

When QMX digital interface VOX is on, it transmits CW (must be in digi mode, CAT command MD6;). When I switch VOX off, turn to TX mide by CAT command "TX;", it sends only the first dash or dot and then goes automatically to RX mode.

Question to Hans: switching to RX as soon as input is interrupted is a feature or a bug? I assume that transceiver with VOX off should behave as if PTT was pressed as soon as TX; command is received and remain active until it receives RX; command. At least all my Kenwood transceivers behave that way and my KX3 does so as well.

P.S. knowing this I think I should be able to program a similar thing to send and receive in a web browser RTTY :)

Hello Jindra?

I'd need to take a look at that when I'm back from US but I'd tend towards calling it a bug not a feature....

Hans:

I am torn between another QDX and a QMX.? Which would you recommend?

QMX, Leland!

Because QMX has all the functionality of QDX and more! But if all you want is FSK Digi modes QDX is great.
