Re: #qmx SSB Update #qmx

Hans,
?
Really interesting information on CESSB.
?
I skimmed Dave Hershberger's article (I will read the whole thing again after work today), and I noticed this comment in his conclusion:
?
The final step in the Controlled Envelope
SSB process is a sharp band-pass filter —
guaranteeing bandwidth limiting in addition
to accurate amplitude control.
?
Is this to be done in firmware?? If not, I am concerned.? The output of the QMX is protected by a sharp LPF, but not band pass.? I am not sure if a low frequency cutoff is necessary, but since I saw it in Dave's document and since SDR is not my bread-and-butter activity, it makes me wonder.
?
Could you comment?

Hi Stan - there is no sidetone when transmitting. There is no receiver noise. Since my receiver has never worked I’m not sure if the display is to show a volume indication level. Disconnecting the speaker changes nothing. Rotating the volume control does nothing. Pushing T in terminal mode diagnostics will key and unkey the transmitter as expected. All bands have power. LPF test looks good all bands. SWR test looks good, all bands.?

Agreed, getting receiver working is next, but if there is a SW bug interacting with my particular build…this will be a challenge to find. Especially after measuring the Vcc/Vdd normal resistance 3.8k/2.5k ohms, to ground and temp rise of the PCM1804 chip in the receive chain of ~25C.

QMX on dummy load. Bench PS at 11.1V and 1.5A current limit. PC connected in terminal mode.?
Audio Filter Sweep -165, (the percent indicator goes up but flatline all bands.

ADC I/Q is zeros, flatline all bands.

Image Sweep, -165, flatline all bands.

LPF sweep looks good all bands.

RF Filter sweep locks up the terminal (and QMX) with no power out and I have to reset the power to QMX and renter the terminal mode. ?But the transmitter can still be keyed after doing so.?

So now you know how to make the transmitter circuit work (but not why...).
Do you hear the CW sidetone when you key the transmitter? Does rotating the volume knob change its volume??
If you disconnect the speaker, do any of the symptoms change? (for the transmitter or receiver functions/diagnostics)
I'm not sure why changing from abs to rel on the keyer audio would affect the transmitter at all.? This is strange.
When it is in the working mode, if you go into the terminal diagnostics and press the 'T' for the transmitter tests, does it stay working, or lock up?
I would investigate the receiver problem and solve it now, since there is significant interaction between receiver and transmitter, and solving that could solve both problems.

Re: JS8 mode in QRP Labs

I also find this use interesting.
?
However, the increased size of the firmware might preclude the other planned extensions, such as the user programmable BASIC modification. Thinking back on a previous post, it seems to me that some sort of user load able module architecture would be useful. Such a provision could be limited to loading “official” QRPLabs firmware extensions, thus avoiding a host of issues.
?
Personally I would prefer the JS8-APRS special message functionality over some other new features, but I’m for delivering what is already in the queue. The JS8-APRS special message feature would make the QMX the complete back country package without lugging another computer on the journey.
?
So Hans; Yes, please add it to “the list”.

Yes. All STM32. QRP Labs products using STM32-series processors are:
  • QDX-series
  • QMX-series
  • ProgRock2
  • U4B
  • QLG2
  • The SteppIR controller

Re: QMX+ test ADC I/Q shows one phase missing

It’s very difficult to further diagnose this without a scope and signal generator as mentioned before. ?
?
If you only see one phase in the A/D QMX test and you have a 12khz ac signal at pins 1 & 7 after injecting an Rf signal at the bnc, that would be definitive. ?That would mean the pcm1804 is bad. ?Without that, it’s a guess.

Re: #qmx SSB Update #qmx

Hi John

Again: consider QMX a CW-only rig, there is no harm in that. Nothing extra was paid in parts for the capability to do Digi and SSB... and nothing forces you to use those. Many big black box transceivers are not designed primarily?with CW in mind, so they do not do some things well such as, maybe they have relay Tx/Rx switching so QSK doesn't work; or maybe they have too much processing latency. QMX isn't one of these! Solid state Tx/Rx switching, low latency (around half the processing latency of a KX2), Blackmann Harris envelope shaping, and the expected features?like Keyer, CW decoder, etc. make it a very good and clean multi-band CW transceiver.?

New build, QMX+ Receiver Deaf on all Bands

During testing I noticed the receiver was deaf, and high SWR on all bands into a dummy load.
Inspected all connections and found no issues with my soldering but, found IC502 was missing on the main board. I ordered and installed IC502.
?
With the installation of IC502 the "Tune SWR" is under Hardware Tests indicates 1.03 - 1.07 on all bands on a dummy load. (Which I feel is good)
The Band, Power Output and Current Draw into a dummy load are indicated below...
Band ? ? ? PO ? Amps
1.838 ? ? ?5 ? ? ?1.114
3.604 ? ? 5 ? ? ? ?.707
5.358 ? ? 3 ? ? ? ?.501
7.074 ? ? ?4 ? ? ? ?.512
10.136 ? ?4 ? ? ? ?.507
14.074 ? ?4 ? ? ? ?.525
18.100 ? ?3 ? ? ? ?.785
21.094 ? ?4 ? ? ? ?.712
24.924 ? ?4 ? ? ? 1.006
28.124 ? ?2 ? ? ? ? .606
50.313 ? ?1 ? ? ? ? ?.607
?
The transceiver operates as expected, i.e. Knobs, Buttons, Menus.
I verified the Band Version is set to 160 - 6m
I have also tried a full reset.
I notice the noise level is very high, even on a dummy load, see attached image.
I wonder if transmitting without IC502 initially took out the receiver section?
Also I notice the power output vary a lot, band to band.
Maybe something with the pass filters not being selected properly, and causing the receiver to suffer?
?
It's late here, but tomorrow I am going to look for a logic table indicating which filters should be engaged for each band and check.
Also going to remove and check if T401 is installed correctly. I feel good it is but it can't be tested installed.
?
Any thoughts or possible direction I should look?

Re: JS8 mode in QRP Labs

Pierre and Muhsin are correct in the general usage of JS8, and I like JS8 a lot too, it's a very nice mode indeed.?

But in case people did not realize: what Warren VK3BYD is requesting is not support for JS8 - QDX and QMX-series transceivers already support JS8, when the JS8Call software is used on a PC and connects to QDX/QMX USB sound card and USB Virtual COM serial ports.?

What Warren is suggesting is standalone support for sending the correct JS8 messages that can be used for tracking purposes. In this use of JS8, an appropriate message is transmitted which activates the JS8 -> APRS gateway then the tracking point shows up on . In this mode you would be able to set QMX (say) in a location tracking mode and it would periodically extract its position from a connected GPS, and send the APRS?message via JS8. Any receiving stations then log this to APRS.?

I think it's a nice idea and I am also interested in this. I have added it to my list but it will not be highest priority yet.?

Re: #qmx SSB Update #qmx

Hi Joe

> I use QRP labs for a reason, I love CW and I'm?
> not interested in SSB phone.?

Me too! I've only had one SSB QSO in my life, and that was 18 years ago and not from my own station. But... undeniable there's an interest in adding SSB ;-)? ?And for the purposes of non-FSK non-singletone?Digi modes.?

But don't worry - I shall add a setting, "CW only" which makes the radio behave as a CW-only radio, and hides all non-CW menu items and functions. And in case there's any worry that somehow your "CW-only" transceiver has additional hardware in it, that you didn't want, and that isn't needed for CW... no! Almost none. The only unnecessary hardware is the little 6mm electret microphone and the coupling capacitors and resistors around it. Hardly anything... all the rest of the hardware is all used for CW! Even the USB connector (when you want to do logging with CAT commands!).?

Hello Bill

Build for 10m with the component values?from the 10m LPF kit

For the T1 toroid build it like the 17m version but remove a few turns off the long winding

For L4 build it like 17m but remove 2 turns
