Re: #qmx #ssb CESSB update (Controlled Envelope SSB) #qmx #ssb

The parts list for the QMX+ states the microphone is a "6mm Electret", nothing more.
I suspect anything that claims to be an electret microphone would probably work.
?
These are similar to what comes with the QMX+

If you it will work better if you spend more money, there's this:

These corded mikes would probably work too:

Re: #qmx #ssb CESSB update (Controlled Envelope SSB) #qmx #ssb

I built up the K6ARK microphone from Printables but with a different element - please see . Hans has one of these for testing - I'm curious to see how this compares to the built-in electret element.

Re: Smoked one QDX - how to not smoke another?

The toroids are pretty-much weather proof.? I use mine as you see it in the photo as a permanent part of my portable feedline.? Rain and a little moisture won't affect performance.? But just to verify, I tested one immersing it in water - and in that case, choking performance degrades by 10+dB - so you don't want to submerge the choke.? Just being wet didn't affect performance.? Winter snow/ice encrusted on it might be a problem.? So for a permanent installation, it is probably better to put it in a box, or at least cover it with some non-conductive shrink tubing.

It applies to all the QMX and QMX+ models.
They all have SWR measurement capability.

Well, the options were pretty limited.? There was ample evidence of mountain goats, but they are pretty shy.? Unfortunately, nobody else up there qualified as a "good looking model".

It was the original Rev1 low bands model.? I carried a high bands model too, as a backup, since they are so small and light.

Re: QCX Mini 10M LPF Toroids

Thanks all for the guidance on the toroid turns on the 17M QCX Mini modified for 10M.
?
I just completed the build, with resulting RF power out of 4.9 watts.?
?
Ron Taylor, I used your turns listed above, except, for no particular reason, I changed L2 from 13 turns to 12.? I also used Hans' technique of manipulating spacing of the wires on the toriod. In each case I compressed the wires at varying degrees and settled at 4.9 watts out. The meter even flirted with 5 watts a few times in the experimenting, but I decided to back off a tad to the 4.9W mark.
?
Again, thanks everyone -- 10 meters is awakening, and now I'm ready !

Sorry, typo in previous response. It should of course say #61 choke material and not 62.??

QMX article in the QST

Hello,
?
you will find a very positive five page review of the "QRP Labs QMX 5W QRP Transceiver" in the November issue of the QST. It covers the firmware version 15 and the usual measurements are included. So it is not only Hans, who tells how good the QMX is. The numbers support his arguments, but puts again some pressure concerning the SSB part on Hans.
?
To add some pressure ;-) : I was looking for the CW-Machine called "QRP Labs QMX 5W QRP Transceiver"... I know, I know ...?

Re: Smoked one QDX - how to not smoke another?

Hi Stefan,

The reason I wrote earlier to use FT240 instead of clipon?ferrite is that the impedance?presented to the currents on the outside of the coax shield is ferrite dependent times N (number?of turns) squared. So having 6?+ 6 turns gives a theoretical 144 times higher impedance compared to a clipon?that has only one turn (assuming same?ferrite type).? You could of course compensate by using 150 clipons instead.
Like someone else wrote, the ferrite type should match the expected frequency range.? -31 for low end (160-40m). -43 for middle and -62 for high bands.? For all-round you can use different chokes in series.

Regards
Jonas

Hi, Mike,
it is an interesting idea. Just a word of caution to Hans, don't spend all that money (15 to 20k) for the coffee. There are some other possibilities too, hahaha. :-)

Re: Smoked one QDX - how to not smoke another?

Thank you Stan! #61 material hasn't appeared in the documents I read so far. I'll try to read up on that too!
Are those toroids weather proof or should they be in a case? I do have some 15m of RG-58 flying around and several connectors. Would it make sense to put the toroid in an enclosure with bulkhead connectors? That would make for the easiest installation.

Re: #qmx #ssb CESSB update (Controlled Envelope SSB) #qmx #ssb

Hi John
?
Hans, I wonder if you might recommend a mic yet, so that we're ready to roll when that fw update is posted for the masses?!

Sorry I have not thunk that far ahead yet. The built-in mic is an elecret. No doubt a not particularly fine one. I would hope that most electret mics would work... we shall see?
