Re: Balloon over Canada
It doesn't appear to be sending its maidenhead grid to Hans' site. Maybe it has the six character grid bug :-) Steve N9SZ

Re: QCX+ T1 Holes Plugged
I purchased a SMD rework device from Amazon after it was recently?reviewed in QST. The focused hot air blast cleared several holes for me with no damage to nearby SMD components. I believe it was

Re: QCX+ T1 Holes Plugged
I second David Wilcox's suggestion.? I am updating my QCX+ from 20m to 40m and solder wick dipped in flux just wicks all the solder right out of the hole.? After that you can just pull the wire out.

Re: QCX+ T1 Holes Plugged
This is a safer method than using a drill bit, which is likely to damage plated-thru holes.? IIRC embroidery needles have a blunt-ish point which works better for this; a too-sharp point can damage

QCX+ Repair, 700 Hz tone
I just repaired a QCX+ for a friend. It had a loud 700 Hz tone on start up, among other problems. Found another reason for the 700 Hz tone: Mis-wired T1. Took it out and rewound it and all was well.

Re: Balloon over Canada
Think of this, not as a balloon, but as a blimp. ?It apparently went to Montana and "parked" there for several days, and is on the move again. ?It's apparently maintaining a uniform altitude. ?And,

Rob, I have a couple of stand alone manual solder suckers and they work pretty well. However, it's difficult to line up the sucker and the iron on either side of a board. And if they're on the same

Re: Balloon over Canada
Some stories claim that you can 'steer' a balloon by changing altitude (without going in to sufficient detail about how that might be done), while not actually claiming that _this_ balloon has those

Re: Balloon over Canada
A balloon is not a great platform for spying... it does not go where you want it to go, and is at the mercy of the jet stream. This one is visible from the ground so not very stealthy.? And if they

Although I have a nice desoldering station with the vacuum built in for parts removal, when it comes to clearing holes, larger stand-alone solder sucker first ("I" don't need another plugin soldering

Mike, This happens, Simon's procedures were put on the QRP Labs page, later several times discussed in length but never updated to address the problems discussed. Several others wrote updated

You might also check the wife's sewing supplies and see if there is a stainless steel needle that is the right size for the hole you want to open. Then heat up the needle as you try to open the hole

Jim, Dip your solder wick in flux and keep repeating. It will eventually get all the solder out. Then if the hole is still tight go to a hobby site or store and get a pin vise and a set of small (very
