Audio level request
I would like to block Digi mode audio from going to the earphone jack. The audio levels are painfully loud when adjusted for correct usb output to WSJT-X. I am afraid to switch between sidebands or to CW without removing headphones first. Any Suggestions ?? QMX+ with 1.02 .

Re: RIT in N1MM
Hello Hans,
?
Thank you for your help.
?
N1MM features the usual contest modes Run and Search and Pounce (S&P).
?
In S&P mode? and engaging the RIT on the radio, nothing happens using the CAT Monitor in PuTTY.
In N1MM the frequency can be changed by either using the keyboard up / down keys or the mouse wheel. Tuning withe the up / down keys is not effected.
RIT can be controlled from the radio, no problem.
?
In RUN mode and RIT on, the up or down key changes the frequency 10 Hz and no more, irrespective of the RIT tuning step setting.
The CAT monitor receives this: RD00010;? The LCD frequency read-out on the LCD changes from - 0.010 to +0.010 and vica versa.
It looks like the N1MM / QMX+ communication in RUN mode is restricted with RIT on.
?
Furthermose, in RUN and RIT on, after using the up / down keys, RIT can not be switched off on the radio. Reverting in N1MM to S&P this works again.
?
N1MM has been set for the TS480 protocol.?The N1MM documentation says that RIT is supported on radio's that support RIT in CAT, e.g. the KX3.?
?
I hardly use RUN mode as S&P is much more interesting for contesting with QRP.
The QMX+ is a very good CW contest machine, due to the excellent QSK and CW filters.

Re: Tune SWR on QMX+ always shows SWR <1.05
Thanks again,
?
I resoldered all eight points and now I get proper SWR readings! I didn't find where to measure ADV_REV and ADC_FWD but I now get good readings that match my NanoVNA (at least where the sweet spot is). So problem solved!
?
Now I got another idea - to find a way to have the esp32 that controls the motor for the magloop tuner stop excactly at the point where the QMX's SWR measurement is the lowest.

Re: QMX SSB low output
Hi Stan ¡.you said¡
a) Transmit EQ - note that sometimes the 'global gain' here defaults to 20 or some high value, which distorts the tx audio; change it back to 0 (this could be the reason for extreme noise with noise gating off)
That was the problem. My default was set to -20, set this to 0 and now (using the exact attenuator setup for monitor rx that you describe), my audio sounds much better. Now to try on air ?.
Many thanks for your time to describe all this.

Re: QMX+: low RX sensitifity @ 6m / 22 dB noise floor / 1500 Hz wistle
Hi Michael,
not sure what ¡®sidebands¡¯ you are asking about. The ¡®spurs¡¯ I see strongly in receive on 6m, 10m and weaker progressively as I go LF in frequency, are every 500Hz, strongest at 1500Hz and 3Khz.
?
It would be nice if Hans could confirm if he has seen this on is own rigs or not, to know if we are chasing an inherent problem or it is unique to build our build quality.
?
I am a bit sceptical about ¡®cures¡¯ that cause problems to go away (or change characteristics), after resoldering. Surely a joint is either good or not connected.??? (I checked for ¡®dry joints visually during construction), Or there is a short somewhere, but this could cause non functioning, not poorer performance?
I did wonder if it was down to how well the anodised panels of the case electrically bond to each other but they do seem to connect.
interesting observation but WSJT-X successfully decoded a fairly weak station dead on 1500Hz on 6m with a strong spur right on top of it, so maybe not such a big problem as I thought, but can still hear an annoying whistle as I usually monitor the frequency through an amplified loudspeaker.

Re: QMX+ printed assembly manuals
Printing is sometimes useful for highlighting sections. ? Also for Writing notes, menu settings and measured voltages on a schematic for future reference?
?
On the other hand using a display lets you zoom into tricky drawings etc and also text search etc?
?
So answer on a project is probably both
?
- although I¡¯ll try to save an image of the marked up schematic electronically too? |
Re: QMX+: low RX sensitifity @ 6m / 22 dB noise floor / 1500 Hz wistle
Hello Ken
Have same issue. Could detect LO signal (RX -12kHz,-40dBm) and additional sidebands at 6 m and 10 m at BNC (RX).see also my Posts. Another OM also detected these Signals. Resoldering trifilar sidebands at 6m and 10 m have gone, but weak 1500Hz Tone remains(-120dBm) Noise floor reduces from 25 dB to 6dB @6m. @12m Noise floor and digital signals enlarge. But QSO is possible. Can you verify sidebands @6m and 10m? I try to document my measurents and suggestions. Vy 73 Michael |
Re: QMX SSB low output
Stan, many thanks for that, I will try your suggestions. Before you replied I tried an interesting experiment, in case the problem was with my microphone... I set up my QMX+ for WSPR transmissions the same way I do for my SSB HF rig - i.e set MIC INPUT to USB and SSB mode instead of DIGI. Then set my PC WSPR to use SSB (Upper Sideband) mode and set the drive levels to not overdrive the QMX USB input.? I ran WSPR band hopping on all bands (Tx 100%). The result was no decodes by other stations. I normally would get 100's of spots on mu U3S 200mW, so something is clearly wrong, nothing to do with my own monitor setup. I shall continue.
I tried the noise gate in single steps right down to 1 but the low audio level chopping still persisted with the mic input. Hopefully your suggestions will isolate another problem. I don't have EQ turned on nor Compression at the moment. My SSB cal went all through with no problems, but I wondered if it can be turned of without a full reset? I took about an hour to run through so I am a bit reluctant to do a reset. Hans says the SSB should work OK without the SSB Cal.
?
thanks for your time to assist.

Re: T507 Winding Direction/Handedness

Yes, all terminals of T507 are at DC ground.? The inductors allow the RF signal to pass, and generate the FWD and RVS signal detection for power and SWR calculations. |
Re: T507 Winding Direction/Handedness

I redid my windings as you suggested and they came out better.? Not perfect but better. After soldering in place, when I checked the connections with a DC meter on ohms everything seemed to be very low resistance and very close to the same readings.? I've looked at the circuit diagram and can see that it is basically a few short lengths of wire more or less connected to one another and ground so I want to convince myself everything is OK.? But .... Is this normal? |
Re: Digikey order
Good idea to have spare 74ACT08's if you plan to blow the BS170's.
When the BS170's fuse up internally I'd guess the 74ACT08 gate drivers might see 12v, at least for a moment.
?
Look on Mouser or Digikey for anything that claims to be a 74ACT08D, and then get the cheapest one.
The D means it's in an SOIC8 form factor, anything else won't fit on the board.
Any additional stuff after the D says how it gets packaged at the factory, and what kind of metal the leads are plated with.
You can verify this on page 11 of the datasheet where part markings are decoded for you:
This is the one I'd get off of Digikey: ?
In small quantities it arrives as "Cut Tape", because Digikey cuts a bit of tape off of a reel of 2500 parts.
?
The TI32A35SM that codeleaf reports is probably something like a lot number.
My QMX+ also has IC503 marked as "ACT08", that other gibberish says "TI43A5SRM".

Re: New QMX - observations and best QSO
New to the group - wanted to say Hi and since this thread is about observations and best QSO - I wanted to share my recent experience with the QMX+.? I am very fortunate to have an awesome? brother (K7MWD) who put together and sent me a QMX+ as I am just getting back into HAM radio.? I am working on the General so limited to 6M and 10M.? I have been having such a blast with this QMX+.? With a very simple QRP setup and a 6M Maxon, I have made some incredible contacts. Yesterday (5/20) in marginal conditions I was able to work all over the US on 6M running about 4 watts.? This little rig is amazing.? Here is a pic from the E opening yesterday.? Still trying to count the grids and contacts but this awesome radio worked the US, Canada and Mexico from DN81.? In this case less was more!? ?
?
I love this radio!

Hi Mark,
?
How did things go with your setup?
?
I¡¯m in exactly the same situation! I¡¯ve run all the tests, and from what I understand, the MAX3221IPWR chip used in the IC-9700 should be able to distinguish between TTL and standard RS232 signals.
?
The only thing I haven¡¯t tried yet is using a standard RS232 converter. I¡¯ve tested with TTL signals at 3.3V and 5V, but there¡¯s absolutely no way to get the IC-9700 to update its GPS data.
?
To give you more context: my goal was to extract GPS data from a GPSDO, send it to a Raspberry Pi, and then use a small Python script to forward the data to the radio.
?
Everything works ¡ª except the radio receiving the data!
Everything has been checked: protocols, pinout, etc... ?
Have you figured anything out on your side? Or could it be that my radio has a hardware issue?
|
Digikey order
I need to order some parts from Digikey. I though it would be good to order some backup parts for the QMX+.? Besides BS170's what are the components that fail most frequently? Also if you have specific digikey part numbers or names that would be great, ss some of the part names match multiple items.? |
Why no AGC for digital modes, as other modes?
?
To Da Wiz; thank you, and a request, to make it better.
?
Personally, I would appreciate the choice to use AGC, with my QMX+, or not, for all modes.
I have used fast or slow AGC with my FT-990 and TS-790A for years, for different modes,
and have found no noticeable performance penalty, except that the sound from no AGC
was harsh and undesirable, and the S meter unusable.
?
Some folks will not RTFMs to turn off the AGC, or properly tweak other software or
hardware, and complain about imagined "bugs" - but for this ol' geezer,
the choice would be appreciated, and I promise I will not whine about the consequences ;-)
?
Thanks for a hearing,
