Re: #qmx #SSB Firmware beta 1_01_003 release #qmx #ssb

Running SSB version 3.? On 20 meters if I tune from VFO B it tunes on the correct frequency.? If I? switch to VFO A it tunes on the frequency that is the Frequency center defined in Band configuration, not the frequency in VFO A. ? ? Prior to this happening I accidently had a Frequency center stored as 0? for 20 meters.? After I corrected it to 14175000, I noticed this behavior.? Cycling power does not appear to correct this.??

Well SSB sure works. Yesterday I worked S51DX in Slovenia on 20 metres. That's 8,700+ km with less than 3 watts! My MIC settings were pretty basis but I did add a little compression (set to 5).

Re: MicMod for the QMX+ using cheap Baofeng Mic #QMXp

Nice, Timo.
One minor note: the QMX has an internal DC blocking capacitor on the mic input, so an external one is not needed.

A dynamic mic is not well suited to QMX, unless you modify QMX internally.
This is because a dynamic mic has an impedance of about 300-600 ohms, and the QMX is expecting a high-impedance microphone, 2.2K? ohms or greater.
So you can't get good performance from a dynamic mic on QMX.

unfortunately no! i don't recall what i had there before but i am pretty sure it was either timeout or post write delay on hamlib rig control window.??
i will go back & try to re-create my issue. if i am successful in isolating the fix, i will post it here.?

Re: #qmx #SSB Firmware beta 1_01_001 release #ssb #qmx

Hi all,
?
THANK YOU HANS. You're awesome. I appreciate the way this group and your rigs work... I enjoy being part of the process of development, even if by osmosis LOL... I doubt I will be much help.
?
I am taking it slow. Installed the beta firmware on my QMX+ with no issues, and am listening to the OMISS 20M net on SSB in the background as I work on my laptop on work stuff. When I get the electret mic in I ordered, I'll get more brave. It sounds really nice to me on the portable / battery operated speaker system I built.
?
I have noticed no issues at all with CW in comparison to the previous firmware releases (which matters to me because I am 90% a CW guy). Well done!
?
THANK YOU!

Thank you both! one of the settings on the rig control page did it - am transmitting now!
i had found the mic source setting earlier, but by itself it wasn't enough.
i apreciate the help

Re: #qmx #SSB Firmware beta 1_01_003 release #qmx #ssb

Hello Hans
?
Thanks for the detailed analysis and info.?
I had a suspiction that CPU overload may be the reason…

I agree, it is not necessary to update the graph when on TX. User will use a websdr or another radio to check anyway.?
Even on RX I think it is not necessary, can be done once when the setting is confirmed and saved.?

Re: #qmx #SSB Firmware beta 1_01_003 release #qmx #ssb

Hello Pawel

The issue I observed is when you transmit and want to play with equalizer settings at the same time, the QMX+ menu freezes from time to time, especially if you want to make significant change (more than one step, eg. change from +3 to -6 with single fast encoder turn). It unlocks afer a while or after release and press PTT again. Back to RX after PTT release is also delayed then, sometimes stuck on TX. Tested with dummy load. No difference if you are talking to the mic or not, I would assume this is not RF-in-the-shack topic.

This is due to the little graph that gets plotted to show the equalization response. The problem is that this graph is not calculated formulaicly, it's actually a measurement. The internal soft-DDS produces a tone for each graph point, then runs it through the equalizer, and measures the output. Then the next point. It's done as fast as possible (not at the realtime sample rate) but still it's a lot of calculation.?

Theroerically it should be possible to calculate mathematically what the response of the biquad shelf filters are, not have to actually measure it. That would be very fast not involving a. 1/4 million simulations as now. It was something which I know can be done better but, my brain was so so so fried of the project by the time I did it, and it appeared not too critical. I'll come back to it.?

The simulation takes less than a second but I think the problem is that during transmit with the microphone as the audio source, the CPU utilization of the QMX is around 93%. So if you are TXing at the time the simulation is started, the simulation only gets 7% of the CPU. And even if you let go of the PTT button the simulation finishes before that fact is noticed and actioned.?

The fix for now until I feel like facing the mathematics, will be to simply suppress the simulation if SSB transmit is in progress. Then the max delay is 1 second and not all that noticeable.?

?Functional comment for Equalizer settings: when you go to the max setting (+20) it should stop increasing and not turn over to -20. Same may apply for other settings where 0 is in the middle.

Re: Internal mic seems to be working? #qmx #ssb

I see. I quickly created a plug-in external mic just now for my handheld QMX, to work with the separate PTT switch I created earlier while waiting for the SSB firmware.
?
Yet to test the mic but I'm so excited to finally have a handheld SSB tranceiver!

Not sure but maybe try setting the mic source to USB instead of ext mic.

hi all,
running 1.01.003, can still run ft8 using digi via wsjtx as before no problems
but running fldigi, trying to run psk31 - radio is going to usb, tune/transmit have no effect. (i believe i have volume all the way up (and not sure that's even required with SSB anymore) i'm monitoring power level through a separate device - nothing going out.? i still have modem tty tx shaping off for rtty, and i have turned off txid, but i am missing something.
receive is fine, all basic configs are in place, and i did have rtty working last week using digi via fldigi. it's some difference in trying to use ssb mode i don't understand (yet).
apologies in advance for what must be a newbie question.
any help appreciated!

QMX+, updated to 1_01_003 without any problem. Calibrated without a problem. Already couple SSB contact made.

Re: 1_01_001 firmware: problem with Digi mode QMX plus - SOLVED

Haaaa

I did exactly the same last night, even though I had read this post... I had my QMX+ driven by WSJT-X and was operating 160m WSPR. I started it and left it running. About 4-5 hours later I came back to the lab to check up on things and noticed it's on USB! Still had lots of 160m spots though! So at least we know USB mode works nicely for WSPR too. Still, Digi mode is definitely recommended for FSK modes as it will give the best performance. So after noticing that I set the WSJT-X mode to "None". Now I need to remember to add some more bold red font warning in the documentation...

Yes, this is caused by new CAT functionality.
Now QMX+ has USB and LSB selections in the CAT; before, if you would try these commands nothing would happen.

So what is happening is that JS8call is configured to set the radio to USB mode before transmit - which before did nothing, now it does.
Check on your radio configuration tab for rig options.? Set the 'mode' control to 'none', and it won't try to change the radio mode, and everything will work.? You can try setting it to 'Data/Pkt', and that may work also by having it set the radio to digi mode: but I haven't tried that yet, and the software may map the 'Data/Pkt' mode to USB, which it does for some radio types that don't support a separate digital mode.
?
And the corresponding thing is likely happening in JTDX, but I don't use that program, so can't help with specifics.

Re: com port conflict

Hello Martin?

My QMX is COM 7 on the win 11 PC and I have set WSJTX accordingly. Also on COM 7 is the logging program which genreates a conflict as apparently they are unable to share that com port.? WSJTX uses a virtual com port to the logging software though but the logging software will not catch the QRG. Any fix to that ?

This isn't a limitation of QMX. It's a limitation of the USB Virtual COM port device class. It's one-to-one, it can't be shared.?

Another strange thing if I am on 28074 i.e. my CQ will go to 28073.5 and then on RX will remain and the next CQ will be on 28073 so every cq The QMX goes down .5. My Flex 1500 will go back to 28074 after CQ.

I believe this has been reported before and is some kind of Split "fake-it" setting in WSJT-X which needs to be switched off for correct operation with QMX.?
