Re: Software Development and Requirements Creep

U.S. software guy here, interesting observations. Perhaps there's a happy medium between "just throw it out there' and 'it ain't right till it's right'".
?
Personally I'm amazed at the sheer work output of Hans, I mean come on look at his level of information sharing. He's a singularity for sure.
?
While I'm not a ssb guy, feels to me like he's tossed it out there at the right time, time to get some real feedback, while perhaps in the uk way, it's pretty dang complete and ready to go!

Re: Software Development and Requirements Creep

Hi Hans
?
I worked in software development for over 40 years for both UK and US companies, and I found that the big difference between the UK and the USA was "software engineering" vs "application development". In the US, there was a need to continuously & publicley demonstrate "progress" on a regular basis, so US teams were required to release as often as possible (even if they knew there were flaws), so as to demonstrate that they were making progress, whereas UK teams in UK companies were required to release stuff that worked as per specifications/requirements - and it is clearly economically superior that the US approach has won, but as a customer of "tech" am I happy?.
?
I personally found the "release it early but never mind the flaws, but we'll fix it afterwards" approach very un-professional, and in fact got fired from a US firm because I refused to compromise my professional standards - in the US "there was never enough time to do it right first time, but always enough time to put it right afterwards (at the customer's expense of course)" - time to market even if it was only just good-enough trumped delivering what was promised/contracted (and specified).
?
So, Hans, may I exhort you to just keep doing what you do, and do so very well. QRPLabs (you) deliver quality stuff which we can trust and rely upon, there is no need for us to carefully scrutinise the fine-print, because what you deliver is what you say, as we used to say "my word is my bond", "no ifs, no buts", "marketing does not TRUMP reality".
?
May the Force be with you always

Thanks so much Evan.
You made my day.
It works!

Re: QDX monitoring audio in Windows 11

Windows 11 has a "listen" feature that can be turned on for audio input devices.? Here is a screenshot of where to find it:

You can get the first screen by right-clicking the speaker icon in the taskbar.

QDX monitoring audio in Windows 11

Hi all
?
I've just got a QDX up and running and it works great.
Good signal getting to WSJTX and decoding properly.
?
Is it possible to monitor the audio signal coming from the QDX?
Searching this group, I've seen a bunch of different answers and can't get it work.
?
Thanks for any clues for setup in Windows 11.

QMX+ Right button Diagnosing as "on"

Hello, I've just finished building my QMX+ and when I go into the diagnostic screen, I noticed that the "Right btn:" Is indicating "Press" at all times. When I press any of the other buttons it moves up to another button press. I began to troubleshoot this a bit and I started by removing the display from the rest of the QMX+. Then the press goes away. From there I tested the buttons one by one. They are functioning correctly. When I test the resistance in the circuit, I noted that I see 3.3kohms, 6.8kohms, and 13kohms... which seems to line up with what I'd expected based on the schematic.?

Can anyone offer any more troubleshooting advice? Thank you.
Brandon?

Good to know, thank you. Hopefully Hans can reproduce it also.

BTW, In WSJTX, I can't select the QMX as a rig type without crashing WSJTX. I have to use QCX/QDX. In JTDX I can select QMX OK. Just found this out while trying to figure out the USB tx issue.

Yes I can duplicate this behavior in wsjtx. Digi mode works fine.? Switch to USB mode I get one good transmit then out just goes BLIP (keys up and unkeys for a microsecond) every time? after that.

Re: QMX high band no receive

I'm not sure if it's a coincidence, but the receive Mux chips (IC402 and IC403 on the diagrams) on my unit also died when trying the new firmware.

Agreed that it would like Jeff is the right person to contact for repair.

Re: #qmx #SSB Firmware beta 1_01_003 release #qmx #ssb

Reloading the version 3 software also does not correct this.? VFO A is now basically disabled as when VFO A is selected the QMX only transmits on the Band Configuration Frequency center.? I don't know how to fix this.

Re: com port conflict

Martin, my setup uses Ham Radio Deluxe as the primary logger.? WSJT-X uses Ham Radio Deluxe as the rig in its settings.? All of its communication flows through the logger first.

FT8 in USB mode - not working right?

开云体育

Anybody else able to run FT8 in USB mode? If I have USB mode selected, I can only do one CQ transmission. After the first one, subsequent ones do not produce RF. Restarting JTDX/WSJTX doesn't fix it. Only cycling power on QMX+ will fix it. Interestingly, I can do as many manual tune cycles as I want prior to my first CQ, but after that nothing will produce RF out.

If I put it in DIGI mode, everything works fine. Both WSJTX and JTDX behave this way. QMX+ responds to the power off button so it doesn't appear to be hung.

Re: QMX SSB settings for Winlink?

Thank you Stan, I fiddled with it last night and had trouble with Putty connection to the right.?

This afternoon I was using win link and it doesn't seem to get beyond speed level 5, then it falls back to speed setting 1 or 2.?

Not sure if I am missing some microphone settings or the like?

Transmit seems to be 4-5 watts based on my power supply display.

With a little testing, I see that JS8call, with the radio mode set to "Data/Pkt", will use Digi mode on the QMX if you manually set QMX to digi mode.? It for some reason does not seem to ever send the mode command (MD6).
?
When I set the JS8call radio mode to "USB", it does indeed send the mode command (MD2) when you hit 'ok' to dismiss the radio settings dialog.? And it works fine for me in USB; I get good hearbeat responses, at a little lower level than Digi mode, since SSB right now is putting out a bit less power.
?
JS8call unfortunately won't switch QMX back to Digi mode, at least in any tests I have run.
But you can do that yourself remotely by sending the MD6 command via USB.? One way to do this is to bring up the QMX terminal program, select "PC and CAT", then "CAT command test".? Type in "MD6" and the radio will switch to Digi mode.? You can type in "MD" to verify, and see the response "MD6".? [The very first time you bring up this CAT command tool, you may have to type in the first command twice; sometimes the very first command isn't recognized.]? Some other radio programs have a tool that you can use to send custom commands to your radio; these will also work to send the remote command.

Re: #qmx #SSB Firmware beta 1_01_002 release #qmx #ssb

I am running 1_01_003 and see similar signals extending well beyond my base frequency, maybe a couple of 100 KHz on my TinySA as well. I am using 60 DB of attenuation into the TinySA. It seems like the IMD goes much further bandwidth wise than other transceivers I have worked with.?

QCX Mini

I just got a Mini for 20 meters finished. I knew it was small but it’s much smaller than anticipated. Worked several stations and had some into France on Reverse Beacon. Unfortunately it was 2 am local time. Hope to find a time to get across the pond when people are awake. I got this one for taking on hikes. 73s John N4HNO

?
I figured out apparently why this is happening.? ?Looking at my Band Configuration settings I had accidently got a zero in the Frequency center setting for 20 meters.? After I corrected this to 14175000 (presumably any valid frequency between 14.000 and 14.350 MHz is good)? I re-ran calibration for 20 meters and got similar curves to the other bands.
?
So if you are having a problem with weird calibration on a band, double check your settings in Band Configuration.

Simple and very tiny mic for the QMX. #qmx #ssb

Here's the tiny mic that I've been using with my (tr)USDX and now the QMX. It's really simple to put together - I took an old mobile phone headphone that had an in-line mic and push-switch and simply removed the headphones and re-wired the switch and mic element as per the QMX/(tr)USDX specs. It works surprisingly well and weighs next to nothing.... Perfect for SOTA etc.?
