Re: Cannot change the mode on QMX+

Test CAT returns OK now but now Test PTT is RED. I presume this is because WSJTX expects the rig to be in DIGI mode. Because I cannot change the Mode nor the Band. I tried a Factory Reset, hoping it might solve the problem, 3 times. It did not work. Interestingly after the first time the Band changed from 30m to 80m, and after the second time to 160m but I cannot change them myself.

Thank you Alan. The drivers are installed properly now.

And thank you Ludwig. I can see the audio drivers, too, after following Alan's instructions.

However I, still, cannot change the mode nor the band.

Bekir,

You are saying that the PC is not showing the QMX+ as having a COM port?

Here is my updated page for installing the driver

Hans used my write-up but this has a few extra notes.

Re: Shack Clock build

Maybe some steam punk-ish levers?? Momentary contact, of course.? Maybe a gauges of some sort to measure voltage & current?? GREAT looking build.

Re: Beacon/WSPR - problem inserting call sign

Check the instructions for your particular firmware
Check the thing you think is a space actually is a space? . .? ?between z and /? on many FW? XYZn/+ ?

Re: Blocking a band on QMX/QMX+

Larry,

I believe that you can “enable/disable” bands using Putty terminal mode and the “band configuration” menu.

Re: Beacon/WSPR - problem inserting call sign

Hiroki,
?
A space is one of the options as you roll thru the letter selection?
Its just a blank character.

Larry,

I'm fairly certain that you delete them from the band list seen in terminal mode.
Manual should help.

Blocking a band on QMX/QMX+

I would like to block out the bands I don’t use.?

I asked this once before but never got an answer on how to do it if it is possible.?
That would make moving though the bands I do use much easier and faster.?

Hiroki,

U3S?
Firmware version?

Manual:- "Note: from firmware v3.05, the callsign must not contain any spaces"

Beacon/WSPR - problem inserting call sign

I am failing to put my callsign in the WSPR menu. Can't figure out how to put blank space before 5 characters of call sign per rule. I think I am following the manual's instruction but I must be doing something wrong. Any idea?

I think they are all this way. I own 3 of them and they all look the same but work.

Adding a wave step would add more cost per board. V 2.0 is shipped with firmware loaded so
the port is tested.

The USB port is tested on all PCB revisions of QMX and QMX+. Not just QMX+ Rev2.

Re: QMX Wish List

Hans,

Thank you for your excellent explanation!? I wasn't worried about it at all, it was just a discovery as I was investigating CW works perfectly but digital was being squirrlly.? I've seen other comments about this but no one had a reason.? Just user error, as is typically the case.

Other than tweaking the low pass filters on a few bands, I have not much left to do on this QMX.? I have been on the air and made quite a few FT8 contacts with a little over 3 watts out, and some surprising CW contact.? The next challenge will be to try it out in a rapid-fire WWFF activation with a pile-up, but I'm beginning to think this might become a regular in my park activation line-up.? It's like a lot of things.? I worry a lot less about a $150 radio than gets the job done than my very expensive KX2 & KX3, and others in the cadre.? It cost less than my first QRP rig in 2011, and performs rings around that radio.

Hello Charles

In addition, I discovered almost immediately that too much audio drive into the radio for digital modes will inhibit transmit.? I thought something was wrong with my QMX when it wouldn't transmit but for a brief second, but when I turned down the audio drive to 100% (Linux pavumixer) it behaved normally.? Presumably it can overwhelm the ADC.? The audio was turned up for another application but the laptop thought it applied to the QMX as well.

There is no ADC involved. All transfer from the PC to the QMX is digital via the USB audio sound card emulation of QMX. So what happens if you have a sinewave at full 100.0% volume, the sinewave peaks and troughs hit the peak numbers the digital transfer is capable of. If you go beyond that, then the peaks "wrap around" so you then get a frequency component at even harmonics, at a lower amplitude; QMX will then measure the incorrect frequency, as well as determine that the amplitude (of those wrapped peaks) is below the threshold and it will switch off the transmit.?

It's all correct behaviour of QMX.?

O Happy Day, indeed !
Worked Angola and France yesterday and today using my first QMX-PLUS and, my second QMX-PLUS continues to move up the waiting list !

Re: QCX classic 40METER key click

Thank you Ron… that’s precisely why I asked the question because the newer version uses disc capacitors, and I was not certain if it would make a difference.
i’ll give it a go and report back.
thank you.

Re: QCX classic 40METER key click

The replacements CAN be polarized but don't have to be. The newer versions use 1 uF ceramic caps. Either is OK

in the version 3 board it’s 2 -10?F Polarized Caps.
Should the two replacement 1 Mf ?caps still be polarized?
thank you

CW Practice / rag chew session FRIDAY

开云体育

I will be doing another CW on the air practice session?Friday Evening at 23:00 UTC / 6:00 PM EST. Anyone is welcome. This practice is intended for operators who are new to CW or they need some practice. IT DOES NOT MATTER HOW POOR YOUR CW IS. Mistakes are OK. Poor fists are OK. Slow speed is OK. Really slow speed is OK. This practice is meant for you to improve your CW. I will do my best to adjust to your skill level. Operate at any power level. If several stations show up, I will operate as a round-table control station. I will do it as a round-table so everyone gets a chance to transmit. Please listen to my directions.

I checked propagation using VOACAP and the Ham contest calendar. It looks like 40 should be OK. I am a bachelor this weekend so my calendar opened up. Plan on being on the air for at least several of hours on Friday. I will need some breaks. I am also looking at morning sessions on Saturday and Sunday. I will send out separate notices for them if they are a go.

Details:
Time - 23:00 UTC / 6:00 PM EST
Band - 40 Meters

How to find me - I will find a clear frequency and call CQ. Go to the Reverse Beacon Network and search for my call sign AB8DF.

That will tell you what frequency I am on. Tune your station to that frequency and if you hear me give me a call. If there is a QSO in progress, please wait for a break in the action. Then send your callsign. If I hear you, I will invite you to join the QSO and start a round-table QSO.

Reply to this email if you have questions.

Re: QMX+ Toroids - To Glue or Not To Glue?

I hot glued a number of my toroids and it has not had any discernable effect on performance.? I was mostly concerned about the ones standing one and to keep another from sliding horizontally into a tabbed semiconductor device.? I used it sparingly.? Theoretically the introduction of dielectric material between turns can increase turn to turn capacitance which can affect coil Q, but a dab here or there should not have significant effect.
