JS8 QSO Party this weekend

New QDX owners may have an opportunity for QSO's with their counterparts here:
/g/js8call/viewevent?eventid=1123335

Not mentioned on that particular page (but elsewhere): it starts at 1900Z Saturday. I plan to check in periodically with my 5 watts.....no - with 5000 milliwatts.

Re: QDX issues: please include info: #qdx

Hi Julian,

The EFHW I have is from KD8UJM on .? I wanted to get on the air so bought this one after some looking around.

I attached a VSWR plot of the antenna from 3 MHz to 33 MHz.? Top of screen is 3:1, middle is 2:1 so you can see it over the HF band.

I run the QDX on a 9V lithium battery - attached a picture of that too.? Ran on 80m last night on WSPR for 6 hours.

I live in a rural area on several acres, so I have the antenna near a corner of my house, and then sloping upward to a tree using a rope.? ?The antenna wire is around 130 feet long.

Thanks.

I will admit to accidentally transmitting with 5 watts for 15" yesterday into no antenna at all. No damage to the QDX.

No, although in the past such enquiries have prompted the description of many other methods, and possible disadvantages :-)

Hi Jay, did you mean to say R27 and not R37?? If it is R27 you are referring to, that's part of a filter/amplifier circuit for the I/Q signals.? That resistor should only affect receiver performance.? Steve KY4GX.

Re: QDX CAT Control Issue?

Catched a fault when using JS8CALL. I have ferrite nr. 31 on all cables. Maybe next I will test a few hours with only a dummy load.

@Hans, in the log function, would a counter as timestamp be possible? That way we can differentiate between logs lines from yesterday. Or maybe a 'boot' mark.

Re: QDX firmware 1.01c with aids for debugging no-transmit-RF issues

Along the same lines of what Darryl said, I was thinking yesterday that a future software feature to be able to inhibit transmission on selected bands might be useful. Say, for example, I have an antenna which is good for 40m and 20m but not good for 80m or 30m and I want to prohibit any accidental transmission on those bands. That seems like it might be a nice safety feature.

Yes I suppose (though please do test it first).?

Other ways could include just seeing VOX as PTT method in WSJT-X but leaving VOX disabled in QDX.

Hans,

I noticed that you mentioned, "...and if you chose a key-up threshold which is higher than the key-down threshold, then this will stop transmission, it will always key-up regardless of the volume." ?Would this be an effective transmit inhibit?

This may be useful in cases where I would like to receive using an antenna that will not produce a safe SWR and protect from transmitting accidentally.

Re: QDX Isues with sWindows10 #qdx

Hi Evan,

Very strange that you get it to work for a while and then something seems to happen and you lose signals temporarily. At that point I assume you try switching bands and back and it still doesn't work? Have you also tried a different USB cable? My cable here is quite long but I would describe it as a high quality cable.

Re: CAT Problem maybe?

Alan/Ryan/Hans

Thanks for the replies, yes I aggree now, that PTT TEST doesn't send RF, so my original problem of QDX not TXing when told to by JTDX/WSJT-X still exists. Think it maybe a setting in L32 now.

Will keep you updated.

Eventually got it working on W7 laptop.
WSJT-X soon showed 0.000 in frequency window. Did respond to retune to 30m but QDX was not right. Had to restart everything.

Ryan,

But yes, all the way to the top is important.
I checked mine, with all the Windows settings at maximum just about 2dB reduction on the WSJT-X slider stops the QDX.

Seems rather close to me.

Re: CAT Problem maybe?

Yes, PTT in "Settings" tests PTT, no signal is output.
"Tune" sends audio to rig.
Ryan,

I am confident that that is what I see on other radios. "Test PTT" no audio at all.
No reason for a QDX to be different.

73 Alan G4ZFQ

Re: QX off Frequency

Weird. Sounds like he got a 30 MHz TXCO?by mistake, either his in ordering or a misshipment by the supplier. 74 Hz off at 30 MHz; not quite within the 0.5ppm spec even at that frequency (that's about 2.5ppm off), but if it's stable and if the Si5351A works properly I suppose it's good.

My 25MHz? TCXO in a QDX is 29.999926MHz. It is the same TCXO as in the QCX.
It is one that does not conform to Hans' expectations. It is stable.

That must be correct, it just means pressing PTT doesn't generate any audio. Hence no RF. It presumably just activates RX/TX changeover only but doesn't generate RF.
