Re: Ordering parts without outrageous shipping costs

You don't even have to mail in your Digikey order, just the check. You
can assemble the cart online and then choose to mail a check to pay.
You wait a bit longer for your parts but you save money.

phase noise

hi all

regarding phase noise measurement ,

what is output frequency?

phase noise is not so bad , but spurs are very high depending of frequency (-40/-50db)

to solve it ,i made an injection locking oscillator with +-100khz capture range at aprox 103MHz.

?

another solutions??

Re: Progrock

Thanks Hans,
I figured that was the case.
Thought I would check before I did much work.
FYI here is a phase noise plot on my unit. Don't know much about PN application but I think it looks not bad. Or pretty good based on what my instrument can message.
I see the frequency needs some tweaking. SA is GPSDO locked
Thanks

You have the fuses wrong on the blank chip you programmed.. The default fuse settings for the Tiny84A have the divide-by-8 clock flag enabled. So your ATtiny84A is running 8x too slowly, this explains why you have serial communication at 1200 baud not 9600 baud.?

I think that you should correct the fuse settings - I am not sure if there may be some other undesirable side-effects if the clock is 8 times too slow.?

Note I did program the Tiny84 myself from a blank IC.
Are there any setting I need to adjust when programming.

I see many sellers on eBay (USA) where you get a bunch (stock the parts box) shipped to you for less than $6.

is an example for $4.14 shipped for a pack of 20.

Try squeezing / pulling out the turns on the yellow filter toroids. This made a? massive difference on my 20m QCX and I was able to go from 2.1W to 3.8W by doing just that.

We'll ignore that fact that it has now stopped TXing - that's another thread!

Re: Output vs. frequency behavior QCX 30m

Steve K1RF,

How critical is the resonant circuit C30 and L4 for single band performance? ?Are we looking at a broad bell shaped curve response or a sharp peak? ?I think I read somewhere Hans picked the values by experiment because of the "floating" capacitance from the FETS etc. ?Maybe a mica capacitor would be in order for C30 if the original were heating up.

Kurt

while Hans said it was easy to remove L5, my went kaput also (not many days before your attempt) !? it my case it was mechanical stress.?

I found a 25 uH inductor in my stash, made decades ago - a little toroid coil encapsulated with leads.? the higher Q of this inductor seems to not be an issue for this application.? see if you have a ferrite core in your stash, and see how many turns in might take to get into vicinity of 25 uH.? meanwhile - I was also check the firm mentioned as my stash in pretty lean on RF chokes of the smaller variety.?

it was a good result - previously on some power ups the QCX VFO resolution could not be adjusted - as it would go to a different menu item when I pressed the button on the tuning knob - now it seems to be working, based upon just a few trials. ?

Re: Ordering parts without outrageous shipping costs

Kurt,?
I like . They stock modern parts, and will ship via USPS. My last order of mostly surface mount parts shipped for less than $4.
I can always find stuff to add to my cart to help me justify the four bucks shipping.

I think we're all spoiled by the cheap shipping we can get from Asia. I am still amazed that I can buy something for $0.99 and get it shipped to me, albeit slowly, for free from halfway around the world.?

I am no expert for sure but I have?never seen a signal such as yours?from a U3S ...besides being ragged looking it wanders considerably up and down in frequency.

TaydaElectronics.com - they have a $5 minimum order requirement, but shipping is very cheap. Just get the bill up to $5, and chances are?that you will pay $1.50 or close to that in shipping. They don't have everything, but it's my go-to place for run of the mill stuff. Shipping might take a little bit longer than your Mouser or Digikey order, but I usually get my package after about a week (give or take a couple of days).?

If you are trying to operate on both 30/40, the answer is likely that the output stage, which is a class E amplifier, needs to operate reasonably close to its optimum resonant frequency.? The series tuned part of the circuit (C30 and L4) can’t be tuned to a “compromise” frequency without degrading one or the other or both frequencies.? Although broad enough for a single band, it just won’t work that well if you are away from the resonant frequency because its efficiency depends on its switching point of the output fets occurring at near zero current.? As soon as its resonant frequency is moves significantly away from it’s optimum single band frequency, the three output fets will experience much higher current at the switching point and end up dissipating a lot of power, reducing the output power.?

73 Enno,

I too find the same as you. I don't know the answer. It sure works on both 30/40, which also is unexpected, after all I was trying to make mine work on 20/30 !

I would like to have higher power output but have not found the way to do it but I've not been trying very hard. I console myself that the difference is only maybe 1dB. A doubling of the power would only be 3dB. I'm pleased though that it works even better on 40m, which was surprising.

However the little extra power on 40m, in practice, remember of course that on 30m any antenna is going to perform better generally for any given height, than on 40m, so in reality of on air practice, I think no disadvantage in the slightly less power on 30m, aside from the fact it is only around 1dB in my case, e.g. getting 2W instead of 3W, or 3W instead of 4W, depending on the voltage. So I'm happy with it. I'd like to find some cheap PA that would be a separate kit that would take power up to say 10W or so but could not find any such from searching eBay.

Virus-free.

Re: DVM/RF detector header Question

I also seem to remember some other folks getting low RF output because a toroid underneath the LCD screen would contact one of the tabs holding the screen in place. ?I bent the mounting tab flat against the LCD board on mine. ?I would do it to yours too just to be safe.?

Good info.
I bought it in UK, shipping time is short than Thailand. For EU country there are import tax+vat too from Thai (not for UK).
