Re: Other rotary encoder for QMX and QMX+?
Hi Steve I added it to my list.? 73 Hans G0UPL On Wed, Dec 25, 2024 at 1:47?AM Steve G4EDG via <g4edg=[email protected]> wrote:

QMX Heated Up, now no output
Using the same power supply (11.8v via BUC converter) and same antenna (Resonant 40m) that had been working for an hour, suddenly the unit quit putting out RF and when I put my hand on it it was very hot. Disconnected power of course, and verified the SWR was still 1.3 on the 40m antenna. This is an assembled unit from QRP-Labs. I've done a reset via the menus, and let it cool overnight, no overheating now, but it's drawing slightly more current (0.12 increase to 0.24) at idle, and doesn't draw anything more at transmit. I don't know where to start. |
Re: QDX Died shortly after arrival
#qdx
Just a hunch...? The BS170s seem to? be the most sensitive, at least to power levels ... maybe heat too. Nothing like FT8 to generate heat.

Re: WSJT-X on Raspberry PI 3B and QMX+ unstable
?I run wsjtx and a raspi to my QDX and it started having similar problems. I found wspr would tx ok using my laptop but no longer on the raspi, just a brief transmission. Anyway, I found out that must have been after an update on the raspi, the sound card level was running at 153%. As Hans usually says set tx audio to max, I did not discover for a long while that reducing the tx audio level from the raspi back down to 100% cured the problem.

Hello Evan,
many thanks for your hints.
?
I measured the voltages at the parts you mentioned:
Q4: Gate 7.29 V? (TX 7.34 V)
? ? ? ?Source 14.24 V (TX equal)? (I saw with a loupe that Drain is not connected to pad, I think intentionally?)
R10: 7.29/14.24 V
R11: 0.24/7.29 V
L1: 0.99/1.01 V (TX plus 0.1 V)
L2: 0.24/0.26 V (TX plus 0.1 V)
Q6: Gate 0.24 V
? ? ? ?Drain 0.0 V
? ? ? ?Source 0.0 V (TX 0.14 V)
?
Evan, what is ment by "being open" of R10, L10 or Q4?
?
Thank you and 73 de Roland

Thank you for your vote of confidence. I retired in 2015 after 44 years of showing up for work (meaning family practice in northern Michigan). And someone even paid me for showing up. In reality I never worked a day in my life. Every job I had I found a way to make it fun. Ham radio made it enjoyable even in the trying moments. Doing research in this area (seeing what one’s brain wants to see) would be a neat research topic and I am sure someone has gotten their PhD researching it. Last night my grandson was searching for a certain part in a mess of Lego pieces. I looked and didn’t see it either. Then I moved the bunch of pieces around on the table and the hunted piece just jumped out at both of us. Sometimes a different set of eyes or different lighting or just approaching the search from a different direction or angle makes a difference. Time does too. Coming back tomorrow everything looks different with a rested brain. Just did a Google AI check and it came back with a very good description of this tooic. My wife has a different set of eyes and brain connections. She would have made a good detective. She can walk in a room, do a quick look, and leave and describe every feature. But she is “interested” in what is in someone’s new home, furniture, or whatever. I see a room, a place to sit down , feel the temperature (I am always cold), and the person I am visiting. Just re iterating: we see what we are looking for or are interested in. And the darned grocery companies. They occasionally change the color of the box and that throws me off. Or move the product to a different shelf or aisle. Really throws me off. And the big disaster one night. A new Chinese radio (back 10 years or so before they discovered how cheep it was to provide polarity protection). Late at night. Connected the battery power. RED is positive +++++ isn’t it? Unless the vendor at the swap who sold batteries put a red price sticker at the negative - - - - pole. Magic smoke and smell produced. Ha! Happy New Year to all. Hope I made some laugh or at least smile. Remember when we were kids? We laughed and smiled so often. My observation is that many of us now find that the stiff tired muscles in our body, especially our faces make it much more difficult to do the same now. It takes practice. But it spreads like a tired yawn. And makes everyone involved feel better. (Seen in a family card game last night.) Smiling is GOOD MEDICINE! Be the REASON someone smiles today. Re: Solder
Hi Daniel,
?
fully agree. The higher temperature requirement can be problematic.
When I'm soldering connectors I also open my secret drawer with the remaining 60/40, to avoid melting structural parts.
Nevertheless, lead free is now my main solder.
As I mentioned above this required a reasonable soldering station (and gave me a reason to buy one) and some trials for a good solder.
Furthermore you have to close your eyes at the checkout when ordering fresh Sn95,5Ag3,8Cu0,7...

Re: QMX 60-15M kit order?
Hello Brien Powdered iron cores, nor ferrite ;-)? ? But everything is here now, no more problems, and we are preparing all the pending orders that were waiting on T37-6 or sticky feet. I updated the status page with this information.? There were 162 pending orders, we started catching up on them yesterday, and it will take a few days to clear the backlog.? 73 Hans G0UPL On Thu, Dec 26, 2024 at 5:56?AM Brien - KE7WB via <ke7wb=[email protected]> wrote:
