Re: QMX final check #4 - it's necessary - just do it

Thanks for sharing!
I just put some Kapton tape in place.

Re: QMX and FT8CN audio issue - strange issue

Agree with Philip. I set audio on the phone (OnePlus) and my tablet (Ouikitel) to max and reduced the threshold in the DIGI menu. After that QMX and FT8CN work perfectly together for me on both devices. Seems therefore rather unlikely that the problem is with the QMX.

Re: Keyboard CW

Hi George,
?
I have been following this thread, and would like to make a few comments based on 48 years of operating CW.
?
I started with a straight key but quickly learned iambic mode B keying using dual paddles using squeeze keying, and I'm so glad I did.? Using full squeeze keying with iambic mode B I am indeed able to send perfectly timed characters every single time (spacing between the characters is not perfect but spacing withing the character is always perfect as long as I don't exceed my speed capabilities).? Some folks probably do very will even if they use slap keying instead of squeeze keying with an iambic keyer but squeeze keying provides perfectly sent characters each and every time.? I recently demonstrated to a very good friend of mine and one of the worlds top contesters using his Elecraft K3 built in iambic keyer and built in decoder that my characters are always perfect using squeeze keying versus slap keying.
?
I also do use a keyboard when running much above about 30 WPM because I find sending perfect code above this speed is pretty difficult for me as I sometimes like to rag chew at 40 plus wpm and sometimes crank it up to 60 wpm).
?
While iambic squeeze keying can provide perfectly sent characters, you still will have variable spacing between each character and there is nothing you can do about that except practice to become as repeatable on your timing as possible.
?
I have 3 QCX-mini rigs (40, 30, and 20 meters) and I love the QCX-mini built in keyer which I do indeed have set to Iambic mode B which I operate using squeeze keying.
?
Just FYI, and 73,

QMX: Build Rev 1?

I have a QMX Rev 1 kit, that has been on the shelf for a while.?
As it is a few versions back, can I build it and have it work reliably by just following directions.....or are there some issues I will discover that have been fixed by later versions?
Would like to know before warming up the iron!!!

All the Yihua Amazon sites have excellent videos showing how everything works.

Go to the DIGI menu and set both threshold's to 25%, that worked for me

Re: QMX final check #4 - it's necessary - just do it

Tantalums usually blow if they are in a circuit with the wrong polarity (Immediate) or if they have inadequate derating when properrly polarized (Fail over time).? De-rating should come from its data sheet if available.? Otherwise, typical de-rating is 50% (I.E. a tantalum that is in a circuit running at 5 volts should be rated for 10 volts.)? Tantalums also do not like high surge currents when power is first applied.? The best tantalums are surge rated which means that can take a short duration high current pulse when fast-rising power is first applied.? That's the type we used for aerospace applications, but they are more costly.? Most commercial applications are very cost conscious and don't use surge rated capacitors.? Don't ask me how I know.

When tantalum’s blow, they’re like raging sparklers. Years ago, I had one blow up in my face. Good thing I had my glasses on!

Re: Yihua 959D question

There's a video on the Amazon web site for this unit that shows using the wire 'fork'.
One leg of the fork is slid under a long IC to lift the component after heating it with the hot nozzle.

The 'Quick User Guide' ,? which can also be easily found with a Google search' mentions that the long wire thingy is especially good for lifting components that the small tweezers can't fit around.?

Looks potentially useful.

Eric,

I don’t know if you have any experience with other hot air rework devices but what is your opinion so far as far as quality/price? ?I don’t need the $350 Hako but every so often could use something like this. ?I have a Hako I can borrow but just don’t like borrowing someone else’s tools. ?I can wait for you to use it for a while for an answer. ?I am sure the group will like to know but you can email me direct at djwilcox01 at gmail. ?Thank you in advance. ?I just received a built ATS3a and an ATS3b and may want to make some changes.

Re: QDX / QMX USB Audio #audio #qmx #qnx

As far as I know, all the QRP Labs devices use the same USB identification codes, so regardless of the name Windows attaches to the device, it should still work as a sound card for the audio output the the QMX.

Re: QMX+ thinks my paddle is a GPS unit

Did you configure the QMX+ to listen to the internal GPS module? 'System Config'/ 'GPS Source' set to 'QMX+ Internal'

Re: QMX+ thinks my paddle is a GPS unit

I've encountered the same issue multiple times with my QMX. The GPS protection kicks in while transmitting CW. No idea why this keeps happening but it messes up the QSO. The issue temporarily goes away when I plug out and the plug the key back in. Is there any harm in disabling GPS protection??

Re: Yihua 959D question

I assume it is the part that you mount as a storage space for the handset.
There should be a small magnetic switch that lowers the temperature when you place the handset on it during operation

Re: QMX+ thinks my paddle is a GPS unit

G is GPS Protection and usually comes on if RF is causing issues.?

U4B autostart with usb power?

Hello,
I am powering my U4B with a usb solar panel and battery, since the U4B does not have? controller for a solar panel or battery charging.
I'm not using this on a balloon, so the weight doesn't matter.

I need the autostart to go, but it doesn't appear to. I was assuming the autostart would only be interrupted if the console is opened.

Any ideas?

New build issues, looking for help

I recently purchased a QMX+ kit and soon started following this group. I finished my kit today but I'm having a couple of issues after kit completion and I'm hoping to get some ideas. I've nearly resigned myself to purchasing another kit and starting over due to at least one error I know I've made. The unit powers on and I was able to flash the firmware without trouble. Hardware diagnostics in the terminal look OK.
?
1. When plugging in headphones, the volume is static at full volume and the volume control seems to do nothing at all.
2. When tuning around, connected to a known working antenna, no s-meter changes can be seen.
3. The terminal apps Audio filter sweep, RF filter sweep, and Test ADC I/Q never start.
4. SWR pretty much shows 10s. LPF sweep isn't pegged but I'm not sure to look for exactly either.
?
Mistakes I've made:
- I had trouble soldering the heavier gauge wire enamel wire for the B&C connections on the SWR bridge. In a moment of poor judgement, I think I vaporized the pad on the bottom of the board using too much heat. In desperation, I soldered the wires from the top of the board. Given that I had no trouble doing that, I now think I didn't enough enamel scraped off and the additional heat led to the problem.
- My soldering skills are not stellar yet and I'm only somewhat confident my other joints don't have issues.
?
Any advice on what to look for would be greatly appreciated!
?
Thank you,
Dan Kerrigan
