Re: Order confirmation

Oh yeah¡ the downside of being hosted on a shared server. I remember this biting me years ago and having to move to a new web hosting service. Seems that some of your brethren are compromising servers and you¡¯re caught up in the mess they created. This is a common problem in the Asia-PAC region where the majority of criminal scams originate.

I feel for you¡ it drove me crazy for months too.

After reading the doc I take it that the improvement for low band units is not significant enough to warrant replacing the original type of transformer, yes?

The original purpose of the designs was to solve the parasitic resonance problem that sometimes reduced output power on 10m band on the high-bands QDX. Hi John,

I am sure that IC5 has failed.? This is common when the BS170s fail.? Continuing to try to run the QDX could cause IC2 to fail and possibly other issues.? I would remove IC5 and verify that the receive current goes down and IC2 does not get overly warm.

Re: QMX Board pinout vs schematic and PSU voltages

Kees,

You are correct. PB4 is vulnerable at the same time and for the same reasons as PD7. Further, as an analog input to an ADC, it is never given 5V tolerance, so its vulnerability extends throughout the operating interval. AN4899 section 5.2.1 discusses V(absmax) for this case, approximately 4 volts.

What I am lacking here is a tie-in to an observed failure. I will be looking.

The other ADC inputs associated with monitoring the three buck converter outputs also become vulnerable if the converter misbehaves.

Re: Best ways to measure output power w/ an o'scope and access ground

Your suggested alternative for tapping input is also a good solution, but there's absolutely nothing wrong with the method I proposed of using the high impedance probe and a cable tee below 50Mhz. It's perfectly flat if used with the supplied probes.

I don't mean to shout but this is important: IT MUST NOT BE USED WITH 50 Ohm TERMINATED CABLES or 1x probes. The probe adapter/dummy load is designed for use with the manufacturer supplied HIGH IMPEDANCE PROBE. Trying to run it at 50 ohms will result in a 25 ohm load and 50% of the power going into your scope cable and terminator.

It is NOT flat for VHF work and can be 3db down at 2 meters.

I showed both methods in my videos. I use a 50 ohm inline termination preceded by a 100w 10db attenuator and further 10 watt attenuators as required for working above the QRP level with this device and my other test equipment. This approach is more comfortably safe for 100watt transmitters and is more accurate at 2 meters and above. The scope in question is only rated to 200 Mhz.

No offence, but please don't give or criticize advice from others that you have not actually tried or demonstrated yourself.

Re: QDX transmit troubleshooting advice¡

John VK7JB,

I have TWO QDXs that both suffered the same fate as yours -- working perfectly, then mid-transmission death resulting in high current on receive (400 mA) and a hot IC2.? I removed the four BS170s but the high current remains.? IC5 may be the problem, or perhaps Q6 (the T/R switch).? But nothing other than IC2 seems hot.

Have you solved your problem and/or do you or others have suggestions for me?

Thanks so much and 73,

Re: QMX Board pinout vs schematic and PSU voltages

Kees,?

That would not solve the fundamental problem, which is LIN_REG_EN can pull the MCU pin too high. A better solution might be a 3.6V Zener from LIN_REG_EN to ground. The V(absmax) spec could never be violated then.
