Re: Dumb QMX question

Cable not included. Get a cable does data. Some only charge. It'll be
obvious that it's data capable when it specs transfer speeds. Doesn't
matter what speed you get. This ()
happens to be the one I use.

I of course don’t know from start to finish how firm all of the statements are but after having been in electronic for the best part of my working career, my guess failure was most likely due to a faulty component. ?In analytical control manufacturing we would burn in the equipment for 30 hours or so before making financial adjustments prior to sending the equipment to its destination.

Back then heat was generated that had to be compensated for the expected operating conditions. ?Some components at the time would change characteristics as a conditions changed…… some FAILED, and that’s why we would burn the equipment in.

I still have some stuff running from the 70’s so I have to think it was built OK.

When I get a new “whatever” today I assume that very little real testing & burn in has been done so I watch the processes especially for the first 30 or so hours, no smoke it’s a go !

I step down,

John

Re: QMX L401 winding confusion

Mark,

As above, There is one section of 19 winds and another of 9 winds.? The photo in the assembly manual has one winding hidden beneath the arrow that says Jumper Wire.

The 9 wind segment begins at the 30m hole and ends at the hole closest to the Start. The jump goes between that last hole and the next one back.

On a clock face:

Begin at the 7:00 position and wind 19 turns ending with a tap at the 11:00 hole. (Skip the hole at 1:00.)

Wind 9 more turns (from the 11:00 position, and end at the 8:00 position, (skipping the hole at 9:30 for now.)

Connect the 8:00 and 9:30 holes with the jumper.

What's in the holes...

At 7:00 the 19 turn wind begins
At 13:00--empty
At 11:00 two wires from the tap--19 turn ends and 9 turn begins
At 9:30--jumper wire
At 8:00--9 tap ends and jumper (which goes back to 9:30)

Hope this helps,

PSKReporter.info says that QDX was just heard in European Russia by UB3PEP at -21 dB snr from a DX of 5138 miles.
Not sure I believe this one. Ten milliwatts @ 5138 mi on 40m in the east cost USA late afternoon ?
I've seen this same report my UB3PEP many times...

Re: QMX L401 winding confusion

Good catch Mark - I didn't notice the picture in the upper right. Yes ignore that extra turn. At least I did and end on the 28th turn plus a jumper to the finish hole. Actually I just de-soldered all the holes except the start, then put the first tap in the next hole over, then used bus wire to jumper between the last two holes, removed the last section of wire and three turns of the remaining section. This I terminated on the bus wire for an easy finish. Sandy KB3EOF

Re: New assembled High Bands QDX went into smoke

Hi Barb,

thanks I will try to replace the 4 BS170 and the 74ACT . In addition I will order two zener Diodes. But it is not easy to get these Zener diodes . High costs of shipping.

?We know us from the crkits io :) .The QDX is such a good trx but Im angry a little bit . especially because I don?t see the reason of a fault. VOltage <= 12 V, swr better 1.5

Re: New assembled High Bands QDX went into smoke

Matt,

A ham friend of mine operated his QDX without any antenna connected by mistake.

I repaired my friend’s QDX which had damaged BS170s and IC5 74ACT08. After replacing those QDX worked flawlessly.?

As a precaution I added two 1N4756 47 V/1W zener diodes as shown in QMX manual. He is very happy with it. After this repair session he confessed that he operated QDX without antenna connected once more by mistake and BS170s and QDX are still alive he said!:)

May be you should try this too.

This is the screenshot I used from QMX manual:

Experience is very contrary to that of most QDX users.? Maybe when you calm down a bit you can send a somewhat more objective email and we can help you.

Subject: [QRPLabs] New assembled High Bands QDX went into smoke

?

I?m very angry about the tx quality of the high bands QDX, Rev 5. my first QDX high bands (rev3) was killed after a few day working good. I decided to buy a new one assembled. After 4 Months waiting I received it today. Testing the 20m Band with 12 Volts exactly and a Z-Tuner and lw with swr better than 1.5 I could start and got a QSO with a station in Russia. I used no Case. Trying to start a cq call I got an answer from a station in GB. While sendig and returning the call one of the BS170 went into smoke. I?m shure that I didn?t make any mistake. Sorry Hans , the trx system push to pull without any Protection is a peace of shi.... I can?t put it in other words. I?m very frustrated and agry. Using? the same frequency, voltage and antenna, i could make QSOs without any problems with two other competition KIT trx ,? the ADX-s and the QRP-Guys Digital III trx . These devices uses 3x BS170in parallel like the QCX. But are protected wit a zener diode. These devices, also for the high sw bands (20-10m Modules) never failed. I could make a few hundred qsos on all bands between 20m and 10m. What is the advantage of a hightech QRP transceiver, with better signals and better receiving results (thats true , absolutely fantastic QDX ), when the trx will not survive a handful of qsos ? especially the high bands QDX seems to have this problem.

I hope that the QMX KIT(ordered in May) will not make this problems. Hans you told me in Friedrichshafen , that it is protected against high voltage and bad SWR.

Matt,
That's why I dumped QDX, however, had I known about the simple zener-fix, then I might have stayed.. GL with QMX - someone at least saw fit to add Zeners!

Mark,

Sounds like you are using the old manual. Download the updated one. It will have the correct information.

Someone also posted this picture which shows it also.

Mel, someone suggested (I think it was Muhsin) using the 20m 50W amp with external LPFs for 40m and 30m.
That mod is on my list of future projects.
With your setup you might consider it too.

Re: QCX WARC Party - July 2023

Hi Luc,

Many thanks for the detailed feedback - appreciated.

?Unfortunately our home QTH is on the ‘highveld’ which is a vast plateau (very few ‘hills’ let alone mountains) inland at about a mile asl? Need to travel to either Western Cape (say 1000Km to the south) or KZN (about 500 Km to the east) or go north west to the Waterburg mountains in Limpopo province (at least 4hrs drive one way). Another challenge being cost to reach wherever as am on a fixed pension (frozen more than 7 years ago) which hardly meets our current survival expenses. Answer? Relocate to Cape Town (easier said than done)? ?

Am seriously considering POTA but that also not without challenges (think safety).

Re your SOTA explainer, very concise and easy for a ‘non amateur’ to understand ??

Wishing you LOTS of FUN being ‘radio active’ and will be good to make contact with you via the ionosphere one day!
