Trouble with these measures is that it not only about the tariff, it is also about the extra work involved, with all the forms to fill it takes easily somebody 10 to 15 minutes to process it, plus they charge taxes plus overheard plus their margin.... Similarly, I got bitten after Brexit and paid more handling fees than taxes on a kit I bought in the UK. There was a movement against red tap in the 90s but it just got reversed about 10 years ago. It isn't just the US, all populists around the world do the same. The irony is that the very same people were whingeing about red tape, we live in a bizarre world.

Re: QMX bad RF filter sweep

So as @Ludwig_DH8WN pointed out, I checked the soldering of the L401, there were some toroid soldering points that were not making good contacts. After soldering them well, the measures are of around -10 to -18dB. Thanks to y'all for the help!?
?
Now the unit works as expected I even managed to make a QSO with the new SSB firmware!?
?
Thanks again for the help pointing out where to check!

Re: #qmx #ssb multitone digital modes #qmx #ssb

thanks for the confirmation Hans
?
i may have to buy a QMX to have a play, as lack of multitone digital modes was all that was holding me back :)

Re: Initializing: Radio Load

Figured it out. I got a solder bridge across two of the pins of IC204.

Re: Initializing: Radio Load

It continues to start up in boot loader mode. I can't talk to it using WSJT-X, it always starts up as a thumb drive.

Michigan QRP Club Weekly Zoom Chat

We had seven folks join the MI QRP Zoom Chat on 03 April. Please join us Thursday April 10 (and every Thursday) at 4PM Eastern for the Michigan QRP Club weekly QRP Chat where the main topics will be QRP and other ham interests. New hams are encouraged to participate and ask questions. It's fun, it's easy, and it's free. You only need a computer, a smart phone, or a tablet that can connect to the Internet. OR if you can't be close to any of those you can join by audio with any standard phone. Just follow the directions below. No software needs be loaded or installed. Anyone can join and non members are welcome. Details are here:
Zoom ID:

The topic for Thursday, 10 April will be an open forum.

Ed AB8DF
Ernie NE3TE
Tony W8CDC
Stan WB8QJZ
Stuart M0SGV
John K4XNY
Jean in France

John is near Atlanta. He has a 50 foot end feed in the backyard, 20 meter dipole and a 17 foot Chameleon antenna vertical. He uses a Wolf River coil for 40 meters with the 17 foot vertical.

Ernie just got a NANOVNA and wants to test a choke he built. But Taxes!!! are limiting his haming.

Stuart got his Michigan Mighty Mite to work and will add some LPF from QRP Labs before getting on the air with it. He just got a TinySA but has not played with it yet.

Stan is doing some Slow scan TV using satellites. ISS is one of the birds he’s is playing with. We all want to hear about the results next week.

Tony survived all of the bad weather. Got a Michigan Mighty Mite board from the QRP Guys and is going though his junk box to see what parts he may need to order.

Ernie is still looking at that the PERformer Antenna and how to add weight to stabilize the tripod. Here are articles that has some info on elevated radials:

Jean in France could not get the audio to work. We all hope he can join us next time.

We talked about the new Yaesu QRP radio and the rumors about it.? One rumor was that it has the same receiver front end as the FTDX10 receiver and will have similar capability which ranks highest on the Sherwood list.

The agenda for the 10 April QRP Chat:
  1. Ernie to do a short introduction and acknowledge any new folks to the Zoom chat.
  2. The topic for next week will be an open forum.

During the open forum anyone can take the floor. We will go one by one until all have had a chance to have the floor. Files, pictures and presentations can be shared if you have any. Please try to stay muted when someone has the floor.

Thanks

Initializing: Radio Load

I replaced the bad output transistor in my QMX, and it wouldn't boot up. I get a USB drive, so I can talk to it through my computer. I tried dropping v27 firmware on it. It hangs on "Initializing: Radio Load" for a long time, then goes to "Band Version QMX 80-20m", which is right. If I leave it? it goes to
?
00,000,032
hh:mm:ss? < 32
?
Where hh:mm:ss appears to be the time it's been up.?I've waited on that screen for a long time and it doesn't go anywhere.
?
I can't turn it off from the power switch. So I cut the power. When I turn it back on it starts drawing power, but the display never comes on.

p.s. the cr2016 will be replaced by a LIR1025 and a little charging network.
If there is some spare time at any time? (hihi) ... i guess the STM32 can be configured to support charging of the RTC Batt .. but i know this is far at the end of the list :-)
?
p.p.s? you delivered a master piece with the QMX

I just completed loading the new firmware using Putty on my Win11 laptop, I also did the calibration. I took my time and made sure the QMX didn't get too warm, all seems like a success. I have tried BPSK31 and FSQ, it is working well and now to try WSJTX. I have not tried SSB voice as I don't have a suitable mic yet.

Tariffs on commercial imports aren't the same as taxation on individual purchases by private individuals. What happens next is far from clear. We shall see. I suspect at least in the short term, nothing will happen to US QRP Labs customer purchases, continue as usual. Longer term, who knows.

This also goes for Amazon. I ordered 100 feet of tin braid. Paid for it.
They just put it aside rather than swallow the Metal tariff. Fortunately,
after three weeks they returned all of my money. Chaos, and musical chairs HiHi.?

New Chat: beta firmware 1_01_003 and PD parameters #chat-notice

Group Notification

A new chat has been created:

Hello Hans, hello guys,

I designed my QRX+ for a supply voltage of 9V by appropriately designing the output transformers.
I have now also tested the current beta firmware 1_01_003. I assume that the choice of operating voltage is irrelevant for the firmware.
Of course, the required calibration was also performed before the tests.
Optimal parameters were found in all individual calibration runs.
During testing, however, I noticed that the PD parameters on my QRX+ behave differently. The effect of the software switch for phase pre-distortion is reversed,
i.e., the ID3 spacing improves when phase pre-distortion = OFF. The CESSB and amplitude pre-distortion parameters have no effect.
I also noticed that with a drive level of 900, in addition to the highest output power, the best ID3 spacing is also achieved.
Reducing the drive level steadily worsens both parameters. A dependency of the curves as shown in the diagram could not be observed.
Any speculation as to why the firmware on my QMX+ exhibits this behavior?

Re: Another QMX+ became SSB capable

Errick,
?
I will need to draw something up. I used some covered 4 lead salvaged from a non working USB cable. Basically just followed the ICOM 8 pin pinouts for the IC-7300/HM-219 and attached the mic and PTT grounds to the 3,5 mm stereo ground (shaft), the mic+ to the ring, and PTT+ to the tip.
?
For the headset, I used a 3,5mm in-line socket for the mic ground (shaft contact) and mic+ to the tip contact. I nipped off the ring contact to get it out of the way and reduce the chance for a short when I reassembled the socket cover. I did some adhesive shrink tubing for cosmetics and extra strain relief. ?I used a 1/4” phone jack for the PTT line so I could use a foot pedal or aircraft strap on PTT switch. Nothing elegant there. The headset phone lead just plugs in to the phone jack on the front panel.
?
For the HM-219 microphone, I used an in-line 8pin male connector and just connected the appropriate pins to get the mic and PTT function from the HM-219 to the QMX+ mic/key socket as described in the first paragraph.
?
Hope that helps.

Re: Tariffs?

To me FedEx is a bigger worry than Tariffs. I placed a parts order with QRP-Labs (value of $32.96 CAN) and 3 weeks later I received an invoice from FedEx. FedEx collected $3.93 in Canadian sales taxes and for the honour of doing that they charged me an additional $11.40 AND $0.57 more in sales tax!
?
So the collection of $3.93 in taxes cost me a total of $15.90!
?
I love the rapid and secure service FedEx provides but this is highway robbery!

Re: Tariffs?

My understanding is that the de minimus exemption is scheduled to become unavailable for items shipped from Hong Kong and China into USA starting May 2.? As far as I know, the exemption is expected to continue to be available for small shipments from other countries into USA.?
However, all this will continue to be uncertain and enforcement is uncertain as well.? Executive orders are now made whimsically and enforcement is focused on personal adversaries.? So I agree that the answer to this question is best sought by examining the evidence: if someone in USA gets hit with a tariff on an order from Hans, we'll probably hear about it on this forum.
