QSO on first attempt with new QCX 5 watter!
Hello All.
I finished my 40 metre version of the QCX 5 watt trx this morning, it worked first time and aligned easily, so I connected it to my low inverted vee dipole antenna and replied to a CQ on 7030. Result! a 559 report and a nice chat with a fellow Brit. So I gave a shout to a station in the Netherlands, and back he came with 549 and another nice chat. Running on 12 volts so I guess about 3.5 watts. What a brilliant day, and what a wonderful little Trx! The performance of the receiver is shockingly good, and the Tx has so many features. Fabulous value, I'm sure these little rigs will become legendary. Good luck to everyone in the process of making theirs, I really enjoyed the build. 73s Julian, G4ETS. |
Precision of 10 Mhz GPS corrected synthesizer.
Hello Hans When checking the GPS synchronized Synth. I arrive at a frequency that is abt 1 or 2 Hz LOWER than a GPSDO ,(at 10 Mhz) (that after setting the 'window' of correction to 1 and waiting a day for stabilization). Can you please verify... (may be a software error or my measurement method). TIA??????? de Joe 4Z7JBA |
Re: 5 watt amp kit - no output
Have you tried the zero bias adjustment on the 5W PA board? For this adjustment there's no need for a signal (RF) from the U3S; you're just measuring a slight increase in current drawn by the module. If there's no bias voltage supplied to the IRF510 I believe you won't see any signal output. Good luck!

Re: 5 watt amp kit - no output ( UPDATE )
Vernon Matheson
? Hi guys, ? Just to let you know that the reason there is no output is that I have the incorrect version firmware in my U3S. ? I was planning on building the simplified kit so didn't order the version 3.12c at the time. However in my eagerness to solder I built the full kit totally forgetting about needing the updated version. ? My apologies to the list for the post and thank everyone that gave me advice. ? Every day is a learning experience for the ole guy. ? You still may hear back from me once I get the new firmware so your all?not off the hook yet LOL!!! ? 73 ? Vernon - VE1VDM / VA1VM ? ? |
QCX firmware version 1.00c release
Hi all I released firmware version 1.00c containing three bug fixes (which may or may not be considered minor, depending on your use of the kit). As usual, if you wish to upgrade the firmware you can download the .hex file from the folder?/g/QRPLabs/files/Firmware%20for%20QCX%20kit/1.00c or you may find the programmed chip in the QRP Labs shop at? The changes are: - Bug fix: auto-character spacing feature did not work properly after version 1.00b - Bug fix: display showed VFO frequency not WSPR transmit frequency, after a GPS calibration - Bug fix: WSPR did not transmit reliably in every slot, sometimes it did, sometimes not 73 Hans G0UPL |
Re: How can i see the raw data from the GPS receiver.
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýHello Bern.?
I'll look into that too. So much good info.?
The visualgps is very similar in format to the software that I used to have some years ago. It showed up how many sats were connected and the data used to stream through in the display. For the life of me though, I can't remember how I did it but with
all the answers I'm getting, the weekends looking very promising. Assuming the YL hasn't got other plans Hi
Thank you.?

Re: 5 watt amp kit - no output
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýHi When you are saying you are getting the 12V dc, I resume you mean on the 5 Watt amp only, are your powering the U3S from a separate 5V supply. Re check to see if you are getting your 250mW. ? Also on the settings you must set PPT delay and TX shaping. ? 73 ? Andrew ? Re: How can i see the raw data from the GPS receiver.
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýGood morning Alan, Arv and Kieth.?
It's all excellent information and thank you for answering my question.?
All being well I should find time this weekend to put something together.?
I think I've got a few spare bits and pieces to be able to achieve some results.?
The arduino comes to the rescue again. I'll certainly look at that option too.?
Kind regards, James.?

Re: QRP Labs and Foundation licensees in the UK?
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýKeith, Get your RSGB local rep to ask the Society to make informal
soundings. Don't ask Ofcom "may we?" as this may result in a
negative reply which has to be recorded. I believe the RSGB has on occasion used the approach "if we asked a question such as [...] , what might your answer be?". This has been known to get a response like "we can't do that but if you were to ask [...] we might be able to do something for you." John F5VLF/G3PAIOn 10/17/2017 08:50 PM, Keith, G6NHU

Re: How can i see the raw data from the GPS receiver.
I actually have a few of these in the bits and pieces draw that i bought some time ago for another project..James. Yes, since someone showed me these cheap TTL/USB/COM converters that's all I've used for playing with the GPS data. Although you can feed a GPS into a real RS232 COM port it often is the wrong polarity and requires inversion. (All RS232 ports I've ever tried accept even 3V3 TTL RXD.) As someone says do NOT send TXD from a real COM port to the GPS although that can be simply done using a resistor/zener to convert to TTL. This page shows the UART connections and also an interesting GPS, the NEO-7 has a configurable 0.25Hz to about 15MHz GPS referenced generator suitable for providing a reference signal for checking a receiver. 73 Alan G4ZFQ |
Re: 5 watt amp kit - no output
Vernon,
Check the triflar coil for correct winding and phasing. ?If the phasing is wrong it will not work. Check continuity of all coils. ?Sometimes the enamel does not come off and you have a cold solder joint. ?If you have a VOM with the amplifier off and unplugged check the DC continuity of all the coils. Even with the bias low and drive low you should have some output. ?You are using a dummy load I hope......... Bill N7EU |
5 watt amp kit - no output
Vernon Matheson
Hi all,
I just completed the 5 watt amp kit and fired it up...glad to report no smoke but also no output. Turning the bias wide open did not do anything...I set the U3S at around 250mW before removing C5 so it was ok. Also when turning up the bias the BS170 did not heat up when on TX. I am not a skilled tecky guy but like to build and only have a DVM for trouble shooting. I re-checked everything as far as the connect to the U3S goes and all is what the manual shows and it is getting the 12vdc no problem. Could it be the trifilar coil..maybe I screwed that up :-) Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks.. Vernon - VE1VDM / VA1VM |

Is there a piece of software that will interpretI'm still waiting for a couple of GPS receivers from QRP Labs, but as others mentioned, you may need to convert TTL to RS-232. James Data from most GPS units is in the NEMA format.? This is ASCII Text data strings.? because GPS receivers run on either 5V or 3.3V you will need a ' level converter so that the 12V RS-232 data from your laptop will not damage the GPS receiver.? Set the baud rate to the same on both laptop and GPS receiver and open a Terminal Emulator application on the laptop.? Configure the terminal emulator to use the serial port that is connected to your GPS receiver.?? You can select which data streams are output by sending commands to the GPS receiver.?
