Re: QMX practice mode suggestions

Bob Parr via groups.io <parr@...> wrote:

Practice mode should toggle TX only in CW mode, leaving digi mode alone.
Perhaps there could be a separate setting to globally toggle TX off, if
anyone needs it.
Is the purpose of this for the radio to keep functioning (say listening
to and replying to JS8 heartbeats) while you are practicing?
No, not at the same time (although it would be another nice add-on). Let's
think of a (common, I think) scenario when you buy QMX to use it as a digi
transceiver and you plan to go on air with CW one day, but you're not
ready yet, so you're either transmitting digi, or practicing CW. There's a
single switch to toggle between digi and CW modes, so you just press it
and when you're in CW mode, QMX wouldn't transmit, because you set it up
this way.

It's set up this way on my desk. There's a USB and antenna connected for
digi, and paddle and speaker for practicing CW. When I want to stop
catching pokemons on wsjt-x and start practicing CW, in addition to
switching between digi and CW, I have to go through menus and toggle the
practice mode.

I just think that "practice mode" doesn't make sense when it comes to
digi. It should be called differently ("Enable TX" or something; I think
there might be a need for it, if someone wants to be 200% sure that they
won't transmit when they play with settings on a PC, etc.), and not placed
in the "CW Keyer" menu.

Help please !!!

Hi Everyone?
I recently finished building the QMX kit for 20 to10 mtr bands. Everything seems to work ok but I am unable to get the transmitter side working. I have gone over the board looking for bad joints and possible shorts but everything seems fine as far as I can see. Can anyone get me any suggestions how I can debug the tx side. Be grateful for any suggestions.?

Re: Broken STM32 pin to LCD

Hi James

I can add a configuration parameter in the next firmware version which allows you to choose 4-bit mode. But remember that:
  • 4-bit mode is half the speed of 8-bit mode (though nobody complained of slowness in earlier firmware versions)
  • Future firmware features may depend on speed (available through 8-bit mode) and/or on other aspects of LCD functions or exploits that are only available?in 8-bit mode.?

I suppose this is more of a request for Hans: might it be possible for you to make a special version of the current firmware that uses this mode?

Re: QMX+ Filter Cascading Question

There are only two primary cw filters, 300Hz and 500Hz.? All of the other selections are the firmware cascading and sliding those two filters for you.? You enable the ones you want to see in the "choose filters" menu, then select in the desired filter in the "cw passband" menu.
There is a full explanation of this in Sec 5.8 of the operations manual.

And make sure there is no solder bridging to the encoder case from any of the terminals

Re: QMX doesn't receive on 20-15 #qmx

I was able to narrow the problem down to IC402. When I bypass it by disconnecting it from the mixer I can receive on 20 meters again. I've ordered a new part and will solder it in when it arrives to see if that fixes the radio.?

QMX just built with 2 (?) issues, for advice

Hello,
Just completed my QMX mini (20-10m).?
Loaded firmware without issue - use 9 volt battery at about 8.5 v.
Initial test with same battery .. low battery indicator, so switched to 9 volt LiFePo at 10.25v.
?
Issues
- stuck on 20 meters, can¡¯t change bands. ?All other menu functions seem normal. But band changing won¡¯t work.
- when keyed into a 50 ohm dummy load, the rig shuts off temporarily as if ¡°protection¡± was kicking in, as it boots back up immediately. ?

Suggestions?
Thanks,

Re: Zeners Diodes in a QMX mini

Back to back zeners were also added to the sBITX to improve its robustness. Users added them to V2 and they were part of the V3 release.

Re: Zeners Diodes in a QMX mini

I think its a complicated question; zener diodes also have capacitance and a different capacitance once they reach breakdown. There is an impedance there and most measurements that I can find were taken only at one frequency (1 MHz).
I would assume that Hans probably has a better idea of how much that is going to skew the QMX or QMX+ and it is probably different than what was done with the QDX.

Re: New Build but can¡¯t get firmware to load

Ok. My care package arrived from Turkey today. I swapped out the PCB2 board and I HAVE A PERFECTLY FUNCTIONING QMX!!!! Thank you to everyone who helped trouble shoot and especially Mr. Ludwig!! I¡¯m super proud and now to build my mid band version!! By the way, I¡¯m now 99% sure I broke that inductor wire while installing the board with the little plastic nut. So, lesson for the day is, QRP is small for a reason. When working with small stuff, be easy, take your time. I got into a hurry and made a boo boo. I¡¯m glad I did because I learned so much about my radio now!!?

Re: Zener Diodes in a QMX mini

Tony:
When the SWR protection kicks in it stops any transmission until there is a QMX power reset.
The SWR protection does nothing else except prohibit further transmissions.??
There is a totally different function which is the tuning voltage % that affects the tuning voltage typically set at 50% voltage which gives 25% power - I used this for some measurements, scaling to equivalent of 100% voltage.

Re: Kester No-clean flux question

I clean off the flux anyway, "no-clean" or not.? Things that are not there cannot cause problems.? But I am very conservative technically.
I am thinking of the tin whisker issue with lead-free solder as an example.? Solving one problem created another.? YMMV.
?
Those no-clean formulations won't come off with isopropanol, you need those costly sprays or a commercial process.
?
I use 63/37 with RMA flux; if it is good enough for the military and NASA it is good enough for me.? Multicore or Kester preferred.

Stan,
?
Tests done using diode mode of a multimeter. Readings are:
?
Q105 AOD403 p-channel mosfet, TO252 package, PCB top.
Drain neg probe, source positive - 0L.
Source negative probe, drain positive - 0.560 V drop
This looks healthy.
?
Q108 AO3415A p-channel mosfet. SOT23-3 package, PCB bottom.
Drain negative, source positive - 1.36V drop (should be 0)
Source negative, drain positive - 0.36 V drop
Looks like this one is fried.
?
Q103 - results are similar to Q108.
?
I did not check other mosfets of SMPS schematics yet.

Re: QMX+ Audio Output Question

Glenn,

Keep in mind that even if the audio from the left and right channels are identical now, that may not be the case in the future when Hans implements stereo outputs. The safest thing to do long term is the resistive summer Eike suggested. The actual resistance values aren¡¯t critical but they should be identical and probably 1K or greater.

I'm thinking this must be the case because if you're listening to a mono signal with stereo headphones, it would be wrong to have the left and right channels out of phase.

" Which output do I use? Tip? Ring? one left open? both tied together?

Tip and ring. Just connect a 10kOhm resistor to tip and another to ring
and solder the two resistors together on the other end, then take that
connection to the input of the active mono speaker.
Both resistors ought to fit nicely into a connector.
That is good practice although it is often overlooked.

Connecting tip and ring together without the resistors will make a short
circuit every moment the two stereo channels are out of phase.
Some op-amp outputs don't like that and it will cause distortion.

If you want to do this with a passive speaker you will need an AF-choke
of sufficient inductance (depending on lowest frequency) with a central
connector. That is more bulky and will not fit into a connector.

If the signal on both tip and ring are actually mono and always in phase
then this whole advice is moot and you can connect tip and ring together
or just use one or the other.

Hope that helps
