Your audio device looks like a Mono only input?

Re: QMX sidetone lag?? #qmx #sidetone #cw

I measured about 10 millisecond delay from key to beginning of transmitted element. Quite significant above 20 WPM, nearly impossible at 35. I didn't measure much difference between RF and the sidetone audio. The element has additional delay from the start of the transmission until it reaches maximum amplitude (for narrow bandwidth) so that delay is even more. I've noticed that on the early QCX as well and have gone to using an external keyer and using that sidetone instead. Most other rigs that I have have a 1 millisecond delay at most. You can get used to it after a while, re-training you reflexes. A bit like steering a big Caterpillar 966 loader: You need to start a maneuver considerably before you need it. I hear big ships are the same way.
It was initially more of a nightmare but Hans has cured the variable timing issue in the firmware now. Before that a lot of other operators were asking for my SKCC number although I was using a paddle. :-)
12 WPM or straight key works the best on the QMX.

Dean,

What version of WSJT-X? Windows? Any VAC?
My Windows/WSJT-X v 2.6.1 shows all 4 of my QDXs as Mono/Left/Right input. Mono/Left/Right/Both output.
I have presumed that is set by what the OS tells WSJT-X and what WSJT-X needs.

The default is Mono, I see no reason to change.

Re: Dire need for a part!

When I started to tinker with usdx pcb designs I got all my parts from sources like aliexpress etc. And learned the hard way that nothing is what is advertised spec wise.?

I spent days to figure out what is wrong with my pcb circuit!?

Then a friend of mine working for motorola rf design dept helped me to find out what was wrong. It was the out of spec parts that I procured from all over the world from non reputable sources.

I put together the very same pcb with parts from digikey and mouser and voila it worked in first try!?

Trust me it is not worth to risk all for a shipment cost.

Dear Karl,
You can put me down as a member of the C509 Group.?? I have a Large stash of parts and a lot of QRP Labs kit parts. Especially for U3S, QCX, and now some for QDX. and I don't mind sharing.

Re: QDX Rev 2 problem

Adam,

Concerning the audio question...

In WSJT when setting up the radio under the AUDIO tab I see QDX for input and output. But, when I click the right side drop down menu I can only put the input to "right" and the output to "both".
Why is that and is that correct?

Re: QDX Rev 2 problem

Allison,

Thanks for the reply. My set up is a 60 something foot wire up about 35 feet. It is connected to a ceramic thru-hull fitting. The 100 watt UNUN is in the building, grounded to a 8 foot ground rod and the coax is inside out of the weather. Now, my old setup was all outdoors which is where the loss in performance started a few months ago. New antenna and same lousy results.

I just built a high band kit yesterday and will get it on the air this morning. I know it's different frequencies but I'll report if there is improvement..

Thanks again,
Dean

Re: QDX Rev 2 problem

Dick,
That is very interesting concerning the computer processor speed. It is a fairly new machine running Windows 11 and does constant computing. I will shut down all processes and only use WSJT and Logview to see if there is improvement.

I also have to get back to Adam to answer his questions but I also like his description of the Microprocessor duties.

I might have to fire up PuTTy and check the settings.......

Thank you!

In bash, you could also use Ctrl-R and type putty.

I just added QMX profile to PuTTY and use:

putty -load qmx

I also have an udev rule so it always symlinks appropriate tty to
/dev/ttyQMX.

Don,

I assumed the added current limiting resistance. ?It¡¯s just that I had not seen this as a recommendation to protect the QMX and control the ?usable voltage to the advised 12 volts. A friend recently recommended that I use a 12 volt Zener in my supply line from my batteries because fully charged they are over 13 volts¡¡ versus the ¡°standard¡± diodes in series and having to short them out as the battery voltage dropped.?

Thanks for your thoughts. ?I am still learning after 63 years in this wonderful hobby.

You cannot just connect a Zener diode across the DC input without something to limit the current or it will just blow up as soon as the voltage exceeds the breakdown voltage.

QMX sidetone lag?? #qmx #sidetone #cw

Over my recent use with QMX I think I have noticed a very small delay between keying and sidetone, which at 20wpm causesnme some sending errors.

I thought it may have been me having a bad day, but don't thin so and yesterday someone else mentioned it on Facebook.

It seems to have a "hair's breadth" delay. Anyone else spotted this? A search here revealed nothing.

Re: Easy Linux access to QMX via PuTTY

Nick,

I use something like:

history | grep putty

This finds all the previous command that contained the string putty
then I can choose the one I want to enter again. Works on most shells.

Re: Easy Linux access to QMX via PuTTY

Hi Mike,

Thanks for making that clear. I'm running default Ubuntu 22.04 LTS and not being a power-user I hadn't appreciated the Linux/shell distinction. I guess another option is to edit the bash.rc file to create a permanent alias for the required command.

Re: Ideas please

Cliff, you might have introduced an intermittent short somewhere when you took the unit apart and reassembled it. I would carefully take it apart one more time and reinspect all the boards.
One thing I like to do as a final inspection is to take a smartphone photo of each side of all sub-assemblies, then, using Microsoft Paint to view it and edit the photos, add small red circles around anything suspicious looking using the shapes tools. After any inspection and possibly touch-up, I then put a red line through the red circle to indicate that particular joint has been looked at and touched up as necessary so you don't lose track of what you inspected. (See attached). It's some more work to do, but at least you are ruling out a newly introduced issue caused by mechanical disassembly and reassembly such as a hairline short from a tiny piece of stray clipped wire or a loose solder ball.

Subject [QRPLabs] Ideas please

I built one of the early QMX rigs, S/N 338, and it's done great ever since, about 2 1/2 months, until last week. I gave it the ultimate test by transmitting without an antenna and not being observant so did it a couple of times. It took it at first, but eventually gave up and shorted one of the finals.

I replaced the finals and D106 zener diode it shorted also. It came up and did fine so put it back in the case. It worked for an hour or so then the same thing, short causing the power supply to current limit to 1 Amp. This time D106 was fine. I replaced all the finals and to be safe the driver IC503, 74ACT08D, chip. Tested and all ok so back in the case. Again it lasted about an hour with FT8 and bang. Same short.

What could be causing it to repeatedly fry the finals? Actually only one of the finals shorts. The other 3 all test good. The antenna is connected with SWR of 1.0. Power out on 20M is 4.5 watts and 40M is 4 watts. Now this evening with it out of the box and just replacing the one bad BS170 it's worked for an hour and a half and still is ok. Could being in the case causes too much heat build up? I don't see anywhere where the case touches anything.

Noticed today an oddity, the QMX display kind of flickers as it powers up. No flicker once it's up, but I don't remember that occurring previously. ??? It makes me think that there is something that is putting a heavy load on the voltage as it powers up so the display isn't seeing the full voltage. I don't see that indicated on the meter on the power supply.

Ideas?

Help!

Cliff, AE5ZA

Re: QMX

Hello Reinhard

1, 2, 3 and 5 are known and pending.?

4 is an issue with your PC configuration somehow... There are sometimes various things like permissioning the dialout group, and disabling?the modem manager, that are required; these should all be in the operating manual, please check it.?

Hello Hans,

After extensive testing of the QMX, I noticed a few things that I would like to mention here:

1.?????? In the logbook, CW is entered as the SSB mode (I already reported on this)

2.?????? Although S-Meter RX is on, no S-Meter is displayed.

3.?????? The volume of the sitetone depends on the volume coder. If the signals in the 40m band are very loud in the evening and you have to turn down the audio coder, the sidetone will also be very quiet. The setting in the menu to 099 has no effect. The volume of the sidetone should be independent of the audio coder and can only be changed through the setting in the menu.

4.?????? Despite setting the audio source and the transceiver at WSJT-x in the Raspberry and under Debian 12 in my laptop, it shows that the program does not recognize the TS-440 (hamlib error)

5.?????? It would still be a wish if the SWR could be shown on the display. We already have an SWR sensor on board and it just does its job quietly.

This is not a linux thing but rather a shell feature. Not everyone on
linux uses the same shell.

Re: QDX - protection of BS17O PA

These TVS Zeners have huge capacitance. Wouldn't that be an issue in the finals circuit?

Re: QMX inductor winding #qmx

Thank you.?
Sorry, I probably didn¡¯t explain that very well.?

The picture shows the windings going through the core, out the back (or bottom) and being wound on the core in an anti-clockwise direction.

This is how I started winding, but found that it didn¡¯t sit on the board ¡°neatly¡± so I rewound it clockwise. It seems to sit nicely when wound this way.?

I know it doesn¡¯t really matter for the inductors, it is more that this may be useful information for other builders. (Assuming I have read the instructions correctly.)

Thanks,
