Could you run the resistance checks again, only with no power
applied? There was something strange happening there, but it could
have been the way the meter reacts to mixed signals. I would
expect the "near" connection to stay the same, regardless of where
the shaft is rotated to; the middle connection to vary from almost
ground to whatever the "near" connection reads, and the third
connection to always read ground.
This is one of those cases where an oscilloscope would help a
lot.
If the volume control can be unplugged from the circuit, try that
and see if it still "squeals".
