Not a bad idea.? That is the most common Kenwood handheld radio interface used for many years,?and copied by so many others.??
The PTT Keying for those radios are a bit different however, (connects the?Mic- lead to the Headphone Ground to Key the radio) so that would have to be looked at.

I have a number of speaker mics that dont quite fit. They are all 11mm centre to centre.
