I think your reply is a yes to my question in that the two pins can be connected to the same voltage source.

Wire the back up battery line I think it is to the 3.3vdc supply.
Then just wire the data and 1pps direct to the U2.
No pull up / down / sideways resistors - no nothing ;-)
Just make the small adjustment on the U2 menu as per Hans' website
and enjoy hassle free GPS working.
