I've made plenty of "rookie mistakes" over the decades (more as a non-rookie than a rookie) and I've used many of the de-soldering techniques posted here.
?
I'd like to add another tip/technique.
?
Snip a segment of solder wick braid to a fine point and perhaps even twist the tip of the braid to obtain an even finer point. Then use it with plenty of flux (dip the solder wick tip in flux) and as many additional copies of it as necessary to extract solder from the hole. As the solder first begins to melt, the fine tip can be inserted and worked into the hole. Try to remove as much solder from the hole as possible before using other implements mentioned here to make your final passes. Typically, I like using bare copper solid wire (often magnet wire with the insulation removed), usually kept in motion back and forth, to clean out the hole even more.
