Re: Why make your own radio?

Ages ago I built a 220MHz Ramsey kit. Learned loads-- mostly that I did not understand how radios worked (Ramsey had awful manuals, all about assembly, nothing about theory of operation or purpose of components.) When I started converting Motorola Micor and GE Mastr Pro to 6M I got to read proper manuals that explained exactly what each component did in the circuit and electronics started making sense. Read the manual, look at the actual device, determine if it was ok or needed mod. That was amazingly educational. I've built a lot of radios (QRP) but nothing was quite so educational to me as those very well documented service manuals from Motorola and GE that explained why "they" chose each and every component in the radio.
Yet, for some inexplicable reason, I still want to build a 'Pixie'. Hurry up QMX+ kit!!!
