EXCEPT - the mic element needs power.
In many cases, a simple button battery (typically 3 volts) will do the job if no power is available.

I have seen some users put the button battery on the same switch (PTT) using a DPDT.? One side for PTT, the other supplies the power to the mic element.? This (supposedly) save the battery some and keeps everything in the mic case (no extra 'power' wire).
