Hello, I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I¡¯ve been thinking.

Last week, I made comments about the lack of presence in the community
of some of our regulators and the impact the lack of service was having on
our pursuit of amateur radio and other users of the radio spectrum.
Perhaps by chance, maybe by coincidence (or was it kismet?) the ACMA
posted recruitment messages for trainee field staff. You can look it up on
social media, the ACMA web site or under news items on the WIA web pages.
It will be a relief to the many people who have looked to the regulator to
have a contingent of field staff to deal with the many investigations and
site surveys that are needed.

There is a history of amateurs joining the regulatory body, by its various
names, over the years and it is an opportunity to receive training which
will provide a career path and expand the knowledge that people have
accumulated in amateur radio.
Here are opportunities for listeners to grow in a professional area
of communications and enjoy the benefits of their previous studies for a
licence in this pursuit.

It seems that our reporters have cottoned onto the official announcement
of the la Nina weather pattern which we are starting to experience
currently. It would appear from the news reports that this climatic
condition only started on the day of the Bureau of Meteorology's
announcement rather than it has been a development
over the past few months until it ticked the observation boxes to be
formally announced. We have had the first cyclone develop to the north
west of the continent and we should be prepared for more severe weather
events to overtake us. Not only the deluges and the electrical storms that
we have experienced in the past days but also there are
warnings of more flooding and fires.

The solar observations provide an interesting set of numbers for people to
digest and with flares producing auroras and some interesting bright
spots, we could or might get good or poor radio conditions in the next
week or so. For the serious DXer, there are good reasons to check daily on
the observations and predictions
available online. For the old fashioned operators, get on air and call CQ
and see what happens. It is a bit like going swimming, in that until you
put your toe in the water you won¡¯t truly know what conditions are like.

Maybe I am too cynical, but our postal service is encouraging us to post
early for the Christmas mail rush and claiming it is prepared to handle
the increased volume of articles. It was barely a couple of months ago
that social media and the TV stations were carrying stories of the
tremendous backlog of articles awaiting sorting and delivery. To temper my
view of Australia Post service, I have been waiting for delivery of some
small items. One was delivered mid week having taken
a bit over a fortnight to travel from Sydney to SE Queensland. I am still
hoping for another to escape its incarceration and arrive at my QTH.

So for the coastal dwellers amongst us, I hope you stay safe and dry and
manage some interesting DX when conditions allow.

I¡¯m Geoff Emery VK4ZPP and that¡¯s what I think¡ how about you?

This is Allan VK4HIT with news from Ipswich and District Radio Club.

President Peter VK4SIR reports that over the last couple of months four
candidates have been studying for their Foundation licence, and last
Saturday the 13th sat their exam at the clubhouse. We wish them the best
of luck and thank members for their tuition and supervising the exam.

The club¡¯s most recent social meeting which was held on the 8th November
with a local councillor being the guest speaker. It was considered a big
success with many members in attendance and lots of questions were asked
and answered.

Last Sunday the 14th of November 2021 Ipswich Wicen group assisted the
Trail Runners Association of Queensland in the running of the Mount
Glorious Trail Run by providing safety communications.

To keep everything running smoothly one base station and four checkpoints
were established and a portable repeater linked everything together. A
total of 14 volunteered for the event. It was an early start for some as
they had to leave home by 0400hrs. The event was a success, and the
organisers were very happy with the professionalism of the Wicen team.
Many thanks to the operators who assisted on the day.

The club¡¯s end of year Christmas get together will be held on Saturday the
27th of November at Kholo Gardens commencing at 10am and it¡¯s a BYO food
and drink event.

Reporting from Ipswich this is Allan, VK4HIT.

--------------------------------------------------------------------*

Hello, I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I¡¯ve been thinking.

The augurers have been probing the metaphorical entrails of the
sacrificial offerings and have decided that the great Caesar will be
calling the people to an election in the next few months. It is hardly
surprising when we see the smiling faces of the leaders suddenly finding
money for funding things we never knew we needed and beaming into the
lenses of the assembled media representatives that the cognoscenti, the
all knowing, are nodding in agreement.

So we have the opportunity to raise issues that would never claim a
willing ear from the elected and the alternative candidates. What I am
saying is that there are issues that concern us as users of the radio
spectrum and as radio amateurs, in particular. To grab the tiger by the
tail, what about the ever increasing levels of what is called ¡°radio
smog¡±? That by product of the digital era that besets both the commercial
user and we hobbyists that sets the level of grass on the waterfall
display to ever higher levels, confuses our equipment in decodes and can
be a threat to life and emergency service personnel.

I know from personal experience that hash from non-compliant solar
photovoltaic, PV, installations, cheap and improperly filtered switch mode
power supplies in the suburban setting can take the easy edge of operating
an amateur station. Apart from the collection of ferrites, the shack is
now sporting a modern version of a noise cancelling antenna. The sale of
this equipment is allowed because there is no
policeman on the beat. We have electro-magnetic-compatability, EMC, rules
and if we are lucky, it seems, an importer or manufacturer goes through a
charade of certification, in most cases, it appears. How could all these
noisy devices be sold, otherwise?

Funnily we used to believe that we employed Customs Officers to ensure the
level of non-approved materials coming through our borders were
restricted. We have a regulator of all things electronic and electrical as
applied to communications and, dare I say it, they would seem to be
missing in action.

As much as our political masters try and devolve responsibility from
government by various stratagems, there is still the outlandish thing
called a Constitution which allegedly sets out who should be responsible
for what. To that end, I believe, our politicians need to not only be
capable of kissing babies, handing out money in front of potential
electors but also ensuring that we actually get what we signed up for and
that is functional government.

This may sound a bit harsh but if the pandemic and the shenanigans it has
provoked are a guide, it is time for us to exercise the firm handshake
(virtual of course) and the honest look in the face and use that well worn
old clich¨¦, ¡°Hey mate, where the bloody hell are you?¡±

I¡¯m Geoff Emery VK4ZPP and that¡¯s what I think¡ how about you?

CLUBBING - QNEWS STYLE

Hello everyone, this is Angelo VK2NWT WIA Affiliated Clubs Coordinator.

One of my first tasks in my new role is checking all Club contact details
that are currently registered with the WIA.

As you well know, the list of Affiliated Clubs on the WIA Website is a
great resource for Clubs to get noticed by people browsing the WIA
Website. It's usually the place where newcomers will first find out about
your Club and want to make further enquiries with you so given this, it's
obviously vital that your Club's contact details are in fact accurate.

Over time, some positions and responsibilities held within Clubs may
change and we appreciate that sometimes the contact names and details of
the new incumbents to a role may not have made it to your Clubs WIA Club
page at the same time. I've recently tried to get in contact with a few
Clubs using the details currently appearing on their WIA Club page and
surprisingly, more than a few have either bounced back as an unknown
address or I've been advised that the individual hasn't held that position
for some time. In some cases I've even been advised that the club no
longer exists.

So, what I¡¯m asking is for all Club secretaries, presidents or whomever is
responsible for looking after your WIA Club page to please take a few
moments today to check the contact details that appear on your page and to
make sure that they are in fact correct and to please make the necessary
updates where needed.

Additionally, by making sure your Club's contact information is correct
you guarantee that correspondence between the WIA and your Club is
received in a timely and efficient manner.

Please let me know if you have questions or if you need some help to
update your contact details on your WIA Club Affiliated Club Webpage. I
can be contacted by email at vk2nwt@... that's VK2November Whisky
Tango at wia.org.au and I¡¯ll get back to you.

Thanks everyone

CLUBBING

GOLD COAST AMATEUR RADIO SOCIETY

IRLP Node 6702

HamFest on the 21st November

--------------------------------------------------------------------*

Hello, I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I¡¯ve been thinking.

From various comments I have heard and read, there seems to be a hole in
our training of new amateurs. For those coming in at Foundation level, the
manual gives all that is needed to pass the assessment but what it leaves
out are the historical items and explanations as to what and why we do
certain things.

Q-codes are an example of practice that stems from the true era of Morse
Code communications and by the time the wireless experimenter came along,
there were many codes in use on the various services that used Morse.
Early in the 20th century the Q-code was adopted as one of the ¡°official¡±
codes for wireless telegraphy. Later it was formalised as the one adopted
by the ITU.

Over the 20th century the practices of our recreation were refined and
codified by international and national regulators and things like national
call books which not only contained the contact details of operators who
were listed by callsign but also a wealth of information of use such as
band plans and forecasts of operating conditions. These books served as a
valuable resource for tasks such as putting mailing addresses on QSL
cards. For us a quaint complaint about loss of privacy was the excuse for
the regulator to cancel the publication.

If we delve into the international handbooks from the United Kingdom and
then USA, we find the vast amount of technical material is prefaced by
chapters which detail the historical background as applicable to their
respective areas. We don¡¯t have a convenient reference source to grace our
shelves that explains the developments in the South Pacific.

I seem to recall that it wasn¡¯t too long ago, the ACMA issued a friendly
reminder to us that we should use our callsigns correctly. That is to say,
when on air the full callsign must be used and the only time this can be
amended is during emergency nets or practice for stations to engage in
emergency communications. Like many things, we
should maintain proper operating procedures and especially with the
improving band conditions on HF. When we consider the situation, when
signals are getting though on milliwatts, an abbreviated callsign could be
received overseas and be misinterpreted.

One of the features of the ARRL Handbook has been the reprinting of the
Amateurs Code which sets down a series of aspirations for the operator to
follow in amateur radio. One of those hopes is that fellow amateurs will
help each other and I was reminded of this during the past week. A
colleague, whom I have yet to meet in person, who lives in my area was
anxious to get a tower erected to try a newly
constructed antenna. It was really a two man task but enthusiasm took hold
and the result was a collapsed jumble of metal.

Shortly afterwards, once members of his local radio club learned of the
misfortune, a small band of volunteers arrived, extracted what could be
salvaged and straightened the tower enough that it could be erected giving
access to VHF and UHF repeaters. To me this is what clubs are about and
this is what amateur radio is about, helping each other out.

I¡¯m Geoff Emery VK4ZPP and that¡¯s what I think¡
how about you?

Hello, I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I¡¯ve been thinking.

As the years go by, the numbers of older people who had parents who
remembered the
horrors of the early 20th Century are getting less and less. That is the
inevitability of life but the significance of Armistice Day is still alive
and
welling in the minds of all those people who have worn a military uniform.
The many
more people who are the relatives and descendants of those who have served in
uniform still see the significance of the Red Poppy and the silence that
will fall
at the 11th hour of the 11th month. In the hope and the pledge of never
having war
again, people will stand and remember. It is so poignant this year as the
aftermath
of the First World War brought the so-called Spanish Flu, for us, this
year, it is
the SARS-Cov19, Covid. Lest we Forget.

Sadly from overseas, we still see reports of fellow amateurs who have died
as a
result of a Covid infection. We have been fortunate that so few casualties
have been
brought about by this virus. The official figures are showing that people
who are
vaccinated generally suffer far less if they are infected. As so many of
our number
are of, shall we say, mature years, international reports indicate that
the elderly
lose their protection faster than the young. For this reason, it seems, if
we want
to keep the number of operators on air stable, it is reasonable that they
take
advantage of the free booster shots of Pfizer vaccine, six months after
they had
their last shot.

Inevitably when we see world wide contests on the high frequency bands,
the people
wishing to join in the sport seek good weather conditions perhaps as much
as good
radio conditions. For some, the almost freak weather just before last weekend
brought down antennas in the southern states. The cost to the insurers
looks high
and the loss of capacity no doubt effected those stations¡¯ scores at the
end of the
contest. However, it seems few of the contesters were ultimately
disappointed with
the totals in their logs.

Coincidentally the spirit of solar exuberance seemed to start with a solar
flare in
a nice doughnut, or should I say toroidal, shape burst forth and managed
to excite
our northern hemisphere in time for Halloween. Just to demonstrate that
Cycle 25 was
really activated another flare travelling much faster was released and by
mid week,
strange lights were seen in the sky and there were intermittent blackout
around
Carnarvon, Wales. It is almost as if Old Sol was giving the world the
message,
¡°Let the fun begin!¡±

So as we move into the official storm season make sure your station is
prepared for
bad weather and you and your family are prepared for fire, storm and flood.

I¡¯m Geoff Emery VK4ZPP and that¡¯s what I think¡
how about you?

VK4 SILENT KEYS @ WIA YEAR COMMENCING JULY 26 2021

SK CALL SK NAME DATE ADVISED BY

VK4IW Kev Dickson 7/7/2021 (vk4dmh)
VK4JJ Joscelyn McGrath 29/7/2012 (vk4zz)

-------------------------------------------------------------*

--------------------------------------------------------------------*

Hello, I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I¡¯ve been thinking.

Well the year is flying fast towards the summer season of troppo and
barbecues. The time when many people take a break from normal routine in
the workplace. Well, I have to ask what has been routine for many caught
in the strictures of the pandemic and the sneaking virus?

You will note that last week there were the announcements of the release
of the 2 by 1 contest call signs and the appointment of a clubs
coordinator, both in the WIA National News bulletin. This got me to
thinking about the relative memberships of the two cohorts, that is how
many people actively engage in contesting as against the number of amateur
operators who support one or more radio clubs. I suspect that
the numbers of club members far out weighs those ardent contest operators.
This brings me to the issue that has me trying to reconcile the situation.

It is a some months on since the election of the new WIA Board and just a
few since the AGM that installed the current administration. It was my
hope that, like others to whom I have spoken, that the fresh faces would
have sprung from the blocks after doing their warm up exercises. Now I am
wondering what is really happening as there
doesn¡¯t seem the interest or support being given the clubs that we would
expect. It is more than just having clubs utilise the public liability
insurance scheme, it is the nurturing of the hobby of amateur radio and
the support of all that goes into that.

Finances have dictated the reduction of issues of the in house journal,
Amateur Radio, and this has meant less opportunity to have club material
printed and distributed as conveniently as once was. It seems that a
simple club portal on the WIA web site and social media pages would go a
long way towards filling this gap. Realistically there needs to be a
greater effort put into relating to the members
and the clubs, in particular.

When we consider the hours that are devoted to the broadcasts that we
enjoy, it is a remarkable effort on behalf of the VK amateur community.
Yet in many ways these various news outlets suffer from lack of input from
clubs. Perhaps it is the shyness of people who get behind microphones to
say hello in a casual manner but overwhelmed
at putting a short announcement down for broadcast that is causing this. I
don¡¯t know. I certainly encourage club publicity officers to support your
broadcasts as this can increase the people who can attend your boot sale
or other event.

Sadly some people would want to expunge history by being offended at
things that don¡¯t settle easily in their world view. History is what
teaches if we are prepared to learn from it and not rewrite it to some new
doctrine. For those who feel that what happened in the past stops them
from getting on with life and joining the rest of us, perhaps time is
catching up and you are wanted with us and not against us.
Old bodies and young ones make up our working clubs and experience is a
valuable commodity if we use it and openness to learn is the mark of
progress.

Please can we have some more engagement and support to the club networks?

This is Allan VK4HIT with news from Ipswich and District Radio Club.

Every year during the third weekend in October, JOTA, the world's largest
scout participation event takes place over the air. It brings together
more than 2 million young people, who can learn about communications
technology and connect with other Scouts.

In Ipswich last weekend we had three groups attend during the day - Girl
Guides from the Ipswich, Forrest Lake District Girl Guides and Venturers
and Rovers from the Jindalee District.

The day began 1230pm and finished at 7pm.

Four radios were in service - one Digital DMR, one Analogue VHF
(Repeaters) and two HF radios.

Contacts were made on all radios ranging from Tasmania, WA, Victoria, New
South Wales and Queensland.

Nearly everyone got to talk to someone on the radios. Not much mike
fright, and they found it easy to talk and ask questions.

Propagation faded in and out at times, which made things a tad difficult
but bearable. Many contacts were made on DMR TG30, and the audio was
excellent in most cases.

JOTA just don¡¯t happen ¨C it needs club members to volunteer ¨C thanks must
go to

Greg VK4GJW
Eric VK4BBK (JOTA Coordinator)
Doug VK4HDO

All groups enjoyed themselves as did the leaders, and they promise to be
back again next year.

BRIAN and Merrell VK4LH and VK4HAJ have always been members of Radar
club Rockhampton since arriving from Mackay many years ago.

A wonderful couple to know and be friends with.

Brian turns 90 years in November and the CLUB was thinking how to
celebrate the event.

Life membership was a unanimous call!

Brian VK4LH has run the WIA News with Mike VK4JT and runs the RADAR CLUB
80 m nett on Tuesdays.

Wife Merrill is fighting cancer and we wish her the best.

I sprung Brian still mowing his lawn the other day in our warm weather.

Brian is an excellent tradesman and machine operator and has manufactured
many item for the club and others over the years.

I always go to Brian when I bugger something and it needs repair.

Congratulation Brian and we all recon it was well deserved.

Hello, I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I¡¯ve been thinking.

It wouldn¡¯t be polite to suggest that I told you so but this past week
managed, in most parts, to prove the Bureau of Meteorology correct.
Wild summer weather has been running along the east coast of the continent
with more predicted in a month or so when we enter the true storm season.
The coastal areas of New South Wales and Queensland have suffered an
onslaught of hail and as a result another shopping centre has had its roof
collapse in the Coffs Harbour area and the Mackay region has a claim to
the largest hail stone to hit the ground in Australia. Interestingly, I
haven¡¯t heard of too many incidences of storm damage to amateur
installations.

It is interesting to note that in some ways the Australian postal system
seems to be working again. Regardless that pictures of stacked to the
ceiling parcel sorting areas claimed to belong to Australia Post continue
to appear on social media, my recent experiences have been genuinely good.
I ordered a piece of equipment from a retailer on
the Sunshine Coast and it arrived the day following it being posted. I
bought a bit of gear to go with a vintage transceiver that I have from an
amateur in VK3 and it took no more than 3 days to arrive and a circuit
board from an Asian vendor took about a week. All these purchases were
radio related, you gather.

So with the impending destruction of the public health barriers for the
majority of us, it is a relief to see areas of commercial activity getting
back on their feet. The other question is just what goods will be
available and which will be unavailable for the Christmas cash splash
season? We know that integrated circuits are in short supply and are
limiting the delivery of motor vehicles and the wholesale and retail
sectors are warning that many goods that would normally be on
the shelves for Christmas shoppers to buy will just not manage to reach
us. One issue is the sky rocketing sea transport costs brought about with
the bottle necks in shipping containers and available container ships. It
seems that we might be wise to prepare for a more frugal festive season
than previous summers have provided.

Years ago the local telephone exchange had a large space dedicated to wet
cell, lead-acid batteries. This was when we depended on a pair of copper
wires to connect us to the outside world and not the wonderful and
powerful computers with radio communications we call mobile phones. The
great thing was that these batteries could keep subscribers connected for
several days during periods of blackouts, cyclones and fires. We now have
a system with the NBN where the service may go down in short time from a
couple of hours to a couple of days, if we are lucky, if mains electricity
is removed from the networks. I have a backup battery for a piece of
medical equipment that will keep me breathing for a couple of days or more
but
without a working UPS, the incoming welfare checks can only be done via an
extra piece of equipment, a mobile phone, and not the internet or land
line.

Such is the price of progress. I¡¯m Geoff Emery and that¡¯s what I
think¡.how about you?

Hello, I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I¡¯ve been thinking.

Let me start by saying WELCOME. I know we don¡¯t usually do that but it is
a word that tells us so much. Welcome says we are pleased to see you and
we want to share with you. So today I say Welcome to all the listeners and
readers of QNEWS whether you are new to shortwave listening, amateur radio
or it has been in your blood for ever.

Of course this is the type of greeting we like to receive from our
friends, our families, our fellow enthusiasts and our fellow club members.
Too often the stresses of life close in on us and we fight to keep things
focused and the friendly greeting gets reserved for immediate friends and
others just get a mental nod. It is a shame
that opportunities get missed in not getting to welcome people around us,
especially when we are involved in a common activity. Broad family
gatherings and large club meetings can impose upon the feelings of the
anxious and the shy but by breaking the ice can often bring a warmth of
friendship as a result.

As the freedom of movement is expanding whilst the effects of the virus,
SARS-Cov2, are weakening, the ability to get together getting greater and
greater. As people share their social time and clubs get fully functional,
we can not only remember to ask, R U OK?, but also remember to include a
welcome too.

This past week, more evidence was coming that we can expect the warmer
part of the year to be sodden as the Bureau of Meteorology has announced a
watch for the start of the La Nina weather pattern. Along with the rain,
it is expected we will have to deal with more constant and serious storms.

Yes I seem to be labouring the point on these issues but we are running
out of time to prepare, tidy up and batten down before these events catch
us. Whilst I put this together, there are warnings for severe storms and
possible super cells to occur over the next couple of days.

Well from the reports that I have seen, the Sun is giving us the
interesting start to Sunspot Cycle 25 with a direct hit from a solar flare
on our duly excited planet.
There were some astounding periods of operating on HF with low noise and
signals pegging S-meters around the east of VK-land. and this included the
signals from Northern America.

The Australian Maritime College has released the 2 X 1 call signs and it
was interesting to read comments that were posted as people fought the
overloaded AMC web site for the opportunity to snare one of these rare
items. At the end of the day it seems that honour has been satisfied and
numerous donations of $70 have been exchanged for a contest call. Now we
wait to see when these valued calls will be
able to be used in the heat of battle, so to speak.

Enjoy the improving radio conditions and you are welcome to join us for
QNEWS again next week.

I¡¯m Geoff Emery VK4ZPP and that¡¯s what I think¡
how about you?

Hello, I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I¡¯ve been thinking.

During the week my motoring club sent an email which was designed to get
people off their backsides and into action. The local Council, in my area
has been promoting a free dumping day prior to the summer storms being
around and of course, the Bureau of Meteorology has issued its forward
estimates of summer in the tropics and sub tropics.
It may not be the best admonition to lay upon people but we may be living
in interesting times, indeed.

There are interesting contests both international and nationally run
coming up in the months ahead and for the point gathering people, getting
the station into top performance should be well in hand.
With the various modes of summer propagation and the improving sunspot
numbers we can still be frustrated by the solar flares with an earthly
strike zone. All in all for radio operations it should be an interesting
and enjoyable period.

But the practical outlook is one of unstable weather and we should be
preparing for it. Making sure the outside parts of our station are in
sound condition and are secure is the start. Making sure that we have
planned for contingencies from fire, cyclone and summer storms with flash
flooding should an important activity at the moment. Then there are the
areas that are still drought stricken and their hopes and
needs will be to embrace and savour such wet weather as comes their way.

From the weather to another subject of importance. We have people who
complain about the few seniors on air who like chewing the fat and sharing
the state of their health. The reality is that so many of our number are
ageing and many are living alone. Having access to a hobby which lessens
the feeling of isolation can be an important part of maintaining a sense
of worth in the community. We have had innumerable
people discussing and pointing out the worsening mental health of the
people who have been required to isolate because of the SARS-Covid-2. The
various media have been devoting lots of time to this issue with many
experts contributing to the discussions.

As we in the largest area of Queensland have barely noticed the impact of
the pandemic, our club activities have continued and the southern parts of
the State are now enjoying more freedom to do things which we consider
normal. As we come to enjoy this new normality and sense of freedom, it is
also time to think of our fellows who haven¡¯t ridden through this storm of
sickness and fear with the same outcome as
ourselves. We need to remember that our individual stories are different
and our responses will be governed by those stories.

Now is the time to consider our fellows, as we see the support groups for
military veterans rally to their members, we radio amateurs should be also
rallying to support our members too as we rebuild our activities through
this year and the next. The young and the old, the well and the injured
are all our fellow amateurs and worth more than the ¡°59 and thanks for the
³¦´Ç²Ô³Ù²¹³¦³Ù¡±.

I¡¯m Geoff Emery VK4ZPP and that¡¯s what I think¡
how about you?

Hello, I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I¡¯ve been thinking.

Well the outcomes from the High Court case concerning comments to posts on
Facebook
are continuing. This past week it was a news item that the international news
service, CNN, had restricted Australian access to its Facebook pages by
banning
Australians from connecting. Whilst the lawyers debate and the journalists
react to
the fact a major organisation couldn¡¯t or wouldn¡¯t provide moderation it
means that
the keyboard warriors and fast of fingers from Downunder will have to
devote time to
other worthy pursuits.

As if to prove the climate scientists are correct there have been severe
storms
buffeting the eastern parts of the continent this past week also; hail at
the back
of Bourke and dust storms on the same day. With the Indian Ocean Dipole,
the weather
system not an antenna, that influences our climate from the west of the
continent
reacting in a way that introduces a la Nina system, the past days have born
testimony to the possibility.

This is the middle of Spring and apart from the proverbial clean up, it is
fair to
ask what is on the agenda for the rest of Spring and the Summer operating
period?
With days lengthening there is the opportunity for getting on with the
preparations
for the Summer storms at home and at club operated installations. The
inspection and
necessary replacement of supports and guys on antenna masts and outdoor
installations is just the beginning of the journey. Apart from storms, flash
flooding and cyclones, our part of the world is noted for bush fires. Have
you and
your club prepared a fire emergency plan and have you trialled and
practised your
plan so that everyone is familiar and confident should they have to follow it
through?

Of course, I believe we should prepare, as well as possible lock downs
will allow,
for the holiday period. Not everyone manages to escape the routine of
daily living
and lots of young people will have time on their hands too. Could the
amateurs in
your area have a program of activities available to introduce interested
people to
the beginnings of learning and using electronics and the other facets of
science and
mechanics, coding and sharing new friendships that we call amateur radio?
There are
people who will be looking for engagement over the long Christmas break
and we have
the ability to help them get it.

I am sure that if we can come up with ideas that would work that the
message can be
passed on through our local media and in person to those we know who might be
interested.

I¡¯m Geoff Emery and that¡¯s what I think¡.how about you?

This is Allan VK4HIT with news from Ipswich and District
Radio Club.

It¡¯s time again to put out the call for anyone you might know
who is considering sitting for their Foundation licence.

The third course for 2021 will begin Tuesday night October 5,
starting at 7pm. As per usual the course will run for between
6 and 8 weeks and culminate in an assessment day consisting
of the theory exam and practical assessment.

If you or anybody you know is interested in doing this course
please contact club secretary Greg via email on
VK4GJW@...
He currently has three candidates already, and can take
another three, so it will be first in best dressed as they
say.

Hello, I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I¡¯ve been thinking.

Presentation is an important part of telling a story as any advertising
executive on the ABC TV program Gruen will tell you. It is that first
impression and the lasting impression when you encounter that
presentation again. We need to be mindful of this in how we respond to
people who pass through our amateur radio and club life.

It was an event that prompted me to think about this situation, an event
which I trust isn¡¯t replicated any where else. A while ago I was invited
to subscribe to a radio club web page and
as the club is within reasonable travelling distance and also linked
repeater distance, I thought why not? It was when I read post which
touched on a matter which has been raised in other contexts that I posted
a question to clarify the circumstances of their action.

The response that I received was less than welcoming and even suggested
defensiveness towards the right to ask the question. After trying to
clarify my intent it was met with an insult from one of the earlier
posters. Now this level of suspicion is hardly the way I have
experienced amateur radio in several decades and I really don¡¯t know the
motivations involved.

What is apparent is that any person privy to that group and who reads
the sequence of posts would be deterred from asking questions in that
place. In other words, for me, the presentation of that club on my
minimal interaction is just don¡¯t go there! When courtesy and
consideration appear absent from an engagement, we automatically draw a
conclusion that isn¡¯t favourable to that body.

So we have an issue of presentation, on an informal level, where an
interaction failed. Why have we become suspicious of our fellows? Is it
the repetitive messaging about the pandemic and the adverse effects that
this situation is having on our
collective mental health? Is it a hang over from the years of the purveyor
of the messages of ¡°fake news¡±? Or is it something embedded in the local
culture which causes the outsider to be distrusted and encouraged to
leave? I can¡¯t say for certain but I use my experience as an example of
what conclusion can be drawn from an interaction.

We are fortunate in our activities that we gain access to various methods
of promoting ham radio and to best take advantage of these opportunities,
we really should think of presentation.

Many clubs go to the trouble of having items of clothing made for members
so they may be identified as one of their mob. It would be poor
presentation to turn up for a press photo with a stubby in hand and tomato
sauce drizzled down the shirt. At
times various arms of the broadcast media want to do a story on one of our
activities. It would be poor presentation to promote your favourite
beverage or race car marque when you are discussing amateur radio in your
locality.

Similarly, in using the internet in its forms, we should be aware of the
potential audience that a post may reach. In the infancy of my interest in
AR, there were roughly 2 groups, licensed amateurs and shortwave
listeners. If we think about the ways people gather information from the
net, they extend from the old fashioned post or email to quite
sophisticated video presentations. Even the casual post can span the globe
and the person that thinks amateur radio is friendly and welcoming may be
deterred and we will never know the value of their company.

I¡¯m Geoff Emery VK4ZPP and that¡¯s what I think¡.how about you?

Hello, I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I¡¯ve been thinking.

For all the followers of the news media on the internet, have you noticed
the big
change that has happened to nearly every post? Yes, that is right, the
comments have
been turned off as of a week ago when the High Court decided that the
owners of
internet posts and blogs (although the case strictly dealt with matters on
the
Facebook platform) were the publishers of the sites and not the strays who
come in
to make comments. The comments themselves were the subject of this appeal
to the
highest court in the land.

So now, if you have a blog or you are a member of a club which maintains
an internet
presence and still allows unmoderated posts to appear, well maybe it is
time to
think why the biggest media distributors of news in the country have
stopped what
you are still doing. The last thing you wish to receive is a letter which
begins,
¡°We have been instructed¡..¡± with the possible result that your bank
account will
become terminally ill.

To another matter which we really should turn our minds. That is how we
present our
story to the world. There are various ways that people use from cinema, to
books and
pamphlet to video, blogs and podcasts and they all have the power to
present the
face, the soul, the feel and the tenor of what this recreation is and
does. Many of
us will remember the awe of first visiting a sombre church full of dark
stained wood
panels and hard wooden seats. Some can remember the first days of school
and the
bright coloured, childish art and decorations that festooned the walls and
the smell
of the room. These two scenes evoke two different sets of memories for
most of us.

When we listen to the streaming music services or the broadcast media, we
have in
the first case the option of selecting the genre of music or in the second
we listen
to the selection on the play list and take joy in the pieces that we feel
reflect
us.

Now what I am getting at is that the impressions and the choices we make are
significant in how we react to the story that is being presented by the
building or
the electronic medium.

Back to amateur radio. How do we like to think of this interest that
sparks people
from around the world to become involved? How do we identify as an amateur
radio
operator? Do we gladly speak to others, when the opportunity arises or are
were
sombre and reticent, defensive even? And then what stirs our enthusiasm,
the dark
wooden panel memories or the happy characters fluttering on the classroom
walls?
What excites us and what will excite others? Will it be stories of defeat and
sadness or will it be images of enjoyment?

These are the considerations that we must take into account in telling the
story of
amateur radio and our part in it. Whether it is at the monthly club
meeting or over
the weekly net, how much more effective is it to have the sounds of
someone who is
thrilled with their time investment? Think on this as I try to and maybe
you will
find a way of adding spark into our story.

I¡¯m Geoff Emery VK4ZPP and that¡¯s what I think¡.how about you?

Hello, I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I¡¯ve been thinking.

Danger, Danger, Danger, Warning Will Robinson! These were the words that
the robot
in the SciFi TV series, Lost in Space, that drew the viewers to another
important
twist in the story line. Well this isn¡¯t science fiction but for users of the
internet and social media in particular, the decision of the High Court of
Australia
in Voller¡¯s case on Wednesday 8th September is most important.

The outcome of a Four Corners episode in which Mr Voller was featured
whilst being
detained in the Northern Territory Youth Detention Centre called Don Dale
was a
number of media outlets reported on the story and published stories on
pages on
FaceBook. Readers were allowed to post comments to these stories and Mr
Voller
believes that he has suffered injury to his reputation as a result. He has
commenced
defamation proceedings in New South Wales.

The decision was made on appeal from the NSW Court of Appeal in it¡¯s decision
upholding the earlier court decision of the NSW Supreme Court. In other
words this
has moved through the 3 highest levels of legal decision making and they
have all
upheld the point that the publisher of a page, in Voller it was on
Facebook, is
responsible for the content of comments posted on that page.

So why is this important to us in the amateur community? Many people and
numerous
clubs have pages which not only allow but also encourage readers to post
comments to
articles and posts. In the vast majority of instances this is going to be
fine as
the comments will be innocuous and related to the content. However, there
are the
few who wish to make personal and offensive comments, in other words,
troll people,
and now it means the owner of the page would be responsible and bear legal
responsibility should a defamation case be launched.

By mid afternoon on Wednesday, Law Professor David Rolph of the University
of Sydney
had contributed an opinion piece to the Conversation, the ABC PM carried a
report
just after 5:00 and other media outlets were scrambling experts and
journalists for
late afternoon bulletins. The evening news broadcasts, that I saw, all
carried
reports of this High Court decision.

As I mentioned this 5 to 2 decision of the Full Bench was the top tier of
decision
making in this case. What has yet to happen is the various defamation cases
commenced by Mr Voller against various media outlets have yet to be
decided. It is
just speculation to suggest that the cases will favour one party of the
other. The
legal fraternity will be hanging on the outcomes as it will be a
significant mile
stone under the law of defamation.

More importantly, it will be the decisions in the defamation cases that
will be
important to the media outlets and publishers of web pages and social
media pages
who will be waiting to see if they will have blown the over draught in not
moderating the pages more carefully.

So the warning to all clubs and people who publish their own blogs, make
sure that
not only what you put on the record and what you allow others to post is
entirely
legitimate comment on the subject and personal reflections do not reflect
adversely
on others. There have already been instances of people taking matters to
lawyers for
settlement amongst the amateur radio enthusiasts.
This should be a WARNING in capital letters.

I¡¯m Geoff Emery VK4ZPP and that¡¯s what I think¡.how about you?

Hello, I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I¡¯ve been thinking.

Happy Fathers Day to all the people celebrating a family relationship with
youngsters and oldsters alike. I trust that you have good times today and
happy
memories to carry you forward for another year.

It also happens to be the first broadcast in Spring and we look forward to
a better
year coming. The oceanographic readings from the Indian Ocean is
suggesting that we
will get above average rainfall later in the year. We will have to await
the reports
from the north of the State as to whether the crocodiles have started to
nest early
to confirm the science. Just to counter the good news are the forecasts
from the
fire watching experts that the central area of the State, where I happen
to live, is
at a higher risk of bush fires this season. It will be interesting to hear
in a
month¡¯s time whether the cyclone incidence will be higher in line with the
climate
change predictions.

For many sporting people, if they haven¡¯t already unpacked their gear from
last
season, now is the time to freshen up the clothing that has been in
storage, rid the
items of dust and go through the spit and polish routine that announces
the upcoming
summer season of activity.

Many clubs will be scratching heads as to whether summer get-togethers can
be kept
on the calendar as the most recent major event, Gippstech has been
cancelled because
of the pandemic lockdowns in various parts of the country. It seems that
we may be
fortunate in the land of the bent banana to be able, for the time being,
to plan,
well pencil in, for group activities not exceeding the total number of
people at
weddings and funerals. So maybe Father Christmas will make a guest
appearance in
your neck of the woods this year, after all.

One of the hard jobs in a few seconds is to pull together ideas and have
them seem
to make sense.
I have from time to time tried to address the difficulties that clubs and
individuals have in spreading the word. We have this medium which you will
note is
underwhelmed with audio clips of news from the clubs. We have various club
and
speciality group sites scattered about the internet and many of these have
excellent
contributions which would benefit other amateurs but, as I have pointed
out, you
have to know where to look or what to put in your search string to
actually find
these gems.

By contrast, successful e-zines, have a routine of sending out an email to
subscribers when the next edition is ready to download. Our own Amateur Radio
magazine gives notice as to when the digital edition is available and when
the mail
out of the physical magazine is commencing. This really is just simple
Marketing 101
of ensuring you maintain engagement of your audience. There is obviously
material
which comes to the clubs and even the WIA which is worthy of distribution
but for
which there is no system to ensure its distribution.

Hopefully we can re-establish the paths to better communication instead of
editors
pleading for material and audiences metaphorically sitting in the darkness of
deepest ignorance because nobody could get their act together.

Ipswich and District Radio Club held its annual general
meeting via Zoom on Saturday 21st August with 20 people
joining online.

All positions of the executive committee were declared
vacant then followed the election of office bearers for
2021-2022.

The four key positions are

President; Peter VK4SIR
Vice President; Mark 4SMA
Treasurer; Robert VK4KHW and
Secretary Greg VK4GJW.

So we have not so much a changing of the guard, but
continuity in leading the club forward into 2022.

In his annual report president Peter highlighted the healthy
state of the club¡¯s accounts largely due to WICEN events
supported by members and friends.

The clubhouse now has the internet, thanks to Rob VK4AB and
security cameras will be installed soon.

Over the last year there has been an increase in membership
which Peter said was due in part to club members being
proactive in promoting amateur radio and the club through
different forms of media, word of mouth and website. Training
is also on-going with a good turn out for Foundation classes
resulting in a good percentage of students passing exams.
There were many other highlights and members acknowledged in
the president¡¯s report including support for the repeater
networks, website, and the hosts and participants in the
various nets ¨C every morning at 8am, the 6M net, DMR net,
Feather Duster net, Newbie Net and with our sister club in
Canada ¨C the Maple Ridge Net.

All net details are on the club website.

Reporting from Ipswich this is Allan, VK4HIT.

-------------------------------------------------------------*
Hello, I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I¡¯ve been thinking.

Huh Yu, goodday cobber. How do we choose to address each
other can depend on the situation that we are in.
The indefinite greeting being used by younger checkout
operators seems to be the current equivalent of hello.
It serves the purpose of not being gender specific and
non-offensive whilst also being easy to ignore.
The older Aussie type of greeting seems to be disappearing
from common use but it serves to show us the change is language.

The rise of the CB culture brought with it a certain jargon
which was popular amongst devotees and we do hear some of it,
from time to time, on the amateur bands as people broaden
their activities. The amateurs have held onto certain
traditions of voice operating and have resisted changes.
During World War 2 there was a standard phonetic alphabet in
use amongst the allied forces and naturally it was popularised
in amateur radio when peace came. I remember teaching myself
Apple, Baker, Charlie and so on. Then in the 50¡¯s the NATO
phonetic alphabet became standardised amongst radio users
and it became the Alpha, Bravo et cetera that is still in
use today.

So enough of word usage and history and on to the thoughts
around how we communicate and with whom we need to
communicate. These days so much of our comms go via the
internet, from emails to instant messaging apps with text,
graphics like emoji¡¯s, other visuals and voice and
combinations of all of these. There is still a place for the
printed newsletter or journal and there are the radio
specific broadcasts of radio and amateur TV. Each of these
modes has its own quirks and much of the language is common.
The means of describing equipment, gear or kit, call it what
you will, remains relatively standard in order that everyone
gets a common understanding of the material. Personal
messages can be fluid, dynamic, unpunctuated and offensive
without causing shock or guilt. Public messages have to be
easy to understand and polite as the message is more
important than any shock value of the material.

So we have a number of social media platforms, web based
resources and these days less paper based communications
along with specific radio based gatherings such as broadcasts
with callbacks and nets. As a general rule, we don¡¯t seek to
offend our readers, listeners or participants and how we
write, present and speak should remain within the normal
operating procedures and common bounds of courtesy. It would
generally be a jar to the listener to hear a spiel of
"10-4 good buddy" vernacular on a weekly net.

As the number of active amateurs become more aged, we mustn¡¯t
forget that there will be younger people, perhaps listening
on scanners or shortwave receivers who will find the style
to be quaint, to say the least. When a message is to be
circulated, we need to know on what platforms it will be
read. It is simply not going to hit the mark if it goes up
on the web site and the bulk of people are using social media
platforms and messaging apps. We need to check what will be
the best way of doing things to get the best coverage for
the most people.

I¡¯m Geoff Emery VK4ZPP and that¡¯s what I think¡.how about you?

VK4 SILENT KEYS @ WIA YEAR COMMENCING JULY 26 2021

SK CALL SK NAME DATE ADVISED BY

VK4IW Kev Dickson 7/7/2021 (vk4dmh)
-------------------------------------------------------------*

-------------------------------------------------------------*
Hello, I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I¡¯ve been thinking.

As the logs for the RD contest are gathered by the contest
manager, this last week saw many former members of the
military take part in the commemoration of the Vietnam
Veteran¡¯s Day, August the 18th the anniversary of the
Battle of Long Tan. I mention this as amongst those who took
part are a former WIA Director and a WIA Life Member.

For those who served it is important that they be able to
reflect on the years in uniform and for the newer members
of the amateur radio family it stands as a reminder of why
we have these events and illustrates that there are many of
the people involved who we meet at our club or on air.

However, I came upon an article that touched on the dynamism
of traditions and how we view things in different ways as
time goes on. It was like a lecture I took that covered the
subject of correct English usage. The point of the lecture
was to get across to the fresh faced audience of first year
students that the written and spoken language was not static
or else we might all be talking like William Shakespeare and
writing in a similar vein. These days the lexicographers,
the dictionary experts, bring out updates to their work and
even tell us what the most popular new word was last year.
The recent article was from an author from the United
Kingdom and his remarks went to the various ways traditions
pass in importance there.

This brings me to a subject that I have addressed before and
that is the very old and new mix of things we find in this
pursuit. We respect and maintain many of the traditional
practices that have been incorporated into amateur radio
such as the Q-code, the Morse Code and SINPO signal reports.
We have had some of these items lodged in the regulations
that govern our licences and others have been a reflection of
the times such as the various iterations of the Amateurs
Code. As a way of invoking what is seen as good behaviour
and respect for fellow amateurs, there really hasn't been a
better expression of aspirations for us all as fellow hams.

At times there is the so-called clash of cultures amongst
our peers when older and younger members of the group seek
to argue that their operating procedures or favoured modes
or type of club meetings is better that the elder or younger
versions might be. Here we see that there really is no right
or wrong answer to these matters and the solution should be
what is pragmatic. If it works amongst your group then it is
the right way to go.

You see, if we go back to the Amateur¡¯s Code from 100 years
back, these things are really covered by the words.

An amateur is up to date and helps his fellow amateurs and
is responsible to his family. The idea is that we keep on
developing our interests and keep our lives in balance.
We have regard to the past and we support what is new and
enjoy all that is in between.

I¡¯m Geoff Emery VK4ZPP and that¡¯s what I think¡.how about you?

Hello, I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I¡¯ve been thinking.

As the Friendly Contest, the annual Remembrance Day Contest,
comes to a close it is fitting to think about why we have a
special time to remember our members who lost their lives to
war.

Our country hallows the ANZAC Day services and follows rituals
that befit regular church services in their solemnity. We
stop and hold the minute¡¯s silence as a tribute to the fallen
from the time following the First World War and the red poppy
flower has spread from the fields of Flanders to be a
reminder to us all.

So many people made their first contact with the technology,
first known as wireless, whilst engaged in wartime pursuits.
With the necessity of invention, the foxhole radio
comprising a used razor blade a receiver or as we know it,
an earpiece, from a field telephone and a coil wound from
the copious wire strewn around the field of operations.

Like so many issues that we can face in life, the service in
uniform during war and other engagements has special emphasis
to those involved and to their close to them. Like the many
who have faced treatment for the viral disease COVID-19 the
experience of isolation from the usual support networks has
been immensely psychologically profound. For the many in the
healthcare industry who have been called on to treat these
people, the physical and emotional pressures have been
exceptional. For the families and friends of the ill and of
those involved in the health services, there has and remains
the constant concern as to whether they will see those people
alive, once more.

I don¡¯t want to equate the two issues but simply draw the
similarities to mind for us to reflect upon.

On days such as the Remembrance Day Contest, it is fitting
to think about those many people whom we have never met,
never shared their day to day lives but for whom we owe our
gratitude. For the many who have sacrificed their lives in
the endeavour of protecting our country, our home that we
call Australia, we can pause and silently remember them with
thanks. For those whom we meet along the way, we can never
know their experience but we may know their friendship and
for all of this we call this the friendly contest.

We can also remember that our fellows may also have the
haunting memories of the life they have had to lead and the
pain they can carry can also put them at risk. For me, I
reckon this is the time for us to recognise our fellow human
and when the hurt seems to show a little in the walk, the
talk or the tightening of the face, I reckon it is fair to
just simply ask, ¡°Are you OK, mate?¡± and be prepared to listen.
Some debts we can never repay but we can be there and for
the rest we can join in hoping for good band conditions,
some good contacts and great company.

All the best in the contest and this is VK4ZPP saying

-- and that¡¯s what I think, how about you?

-------------------------------------------------------------*
Hello, I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I¡¯ve been thinking.

This week we have been seeing discussions about how to
convince as many people as possible to take advantage of
the COVID-19 vaccination. In what is being classed as
public health emergency, it is important to control the
spread of a very contagious disease and we are told that
increasing the numbers of people who have protection from
the worst effects of the infection will hasten the return
to a closer to normal life style.

The people who infest the social media and sections of the
internet as well as some public commentators seem to have
achieved notoriety for their views but not their lack of
knowledge of the areas of science that we are depending on
for our safety. Normally we would expect that those people
who have devoted some years of training and study to be
given credence for their professional advice. We seem to have
fallen into a dystopian realm where the least knowledgeable
can confound the most highly trained sources of advice.

So it is that various schemes are being employed around the
world to ensure that people take action to protect themselves
and their communities with a basic public health measure.

With these facts in mind, I have been wondering if the
smattering of discussions occurring within the amateur
radio world is a result of a similar phenomenon. As I for
one have raised the issue of how do we encourage more people
to consider enjoying amateur radio, I have noticed others
raising the same questions and some suggesting possible
answers to what seems to be a conundrum.

We can almost bet that if someone proposes a course of
action, the fastest keyboards on the planet and other
commentators will jump to denigrate the suggestions with the
net result that no positive action is followed through.
The commentary of denial replaces the discussion and
consideration of the various points which can be argued are
good and bad and when it comes to recruitment we see very
little happening.

In case you consider this a peculiar Australian issue, it
appears not to be and national bodies are faced with
declining numbers unless they have a positive course of
promotion.

It is some years since we have seen active promotion of the
hobby and the local entities have retreated into their
meeting rooms and seem totally devoted to issues of their
members. This is the appearance that seems to greet us any
way. I have noticed the lack of club news in Amateur Radio
magazine and the small amount of material lodged for
broadcast. We can probably find our way to social media
pages and web sites but even the updating via the Memnet
service of the WIA is seemingly random or accidental in its
frequency of delivery.

What I am driving at is this; is this a malaise, a lack of
confidence in the whole body of amateur radio, as it seems
to be with the vaccine, or is it the ¡°she¡¯ll be right mate¡±
model of letting things fall into total disrepair? Surely
with many people forced into home for extended periods and a
good working internet, there is the means for people to
discuss and debate and reconcile the truth from the fiction
and start getting amateur radio growing again.

I¡¯m Geoff Emery and that¡¯s what I think¡.how about you?

-------------------------------------------------------------*

Hello, I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I¡¯ve been thinking.

And a very good morning on this momentous day. Around the
racetracks and stables of the world there will be extra
rations for the horses and maybe a little something for the
people within the thoroughbred industry. Yes it is the first
of August and the official birthday of thoroughbred horses.

Many other keepers of horses also celebrate this rollover
day, so it is a bit like the Mothers¡¯ Day or Fathers¡¯ Day
for all equines.

Now on another matter which is somewhat concerning to the
future of our pursuit of amateur radio.

You will remember the flurry of excitement and angst that
went through our number when a long standing arrangement of
reciprocity with our US cousins was turned on its head.
I refer to the treaty arrangements whereby holders of
Australian and USA amateur licences could apply for
reciprocal licences when living in the other country.

To put some context on this, the capacity to sit and apply
and be granted a licence from the FCC became a reality when
a group of holders of US licences became authorised to
conduct tests in Australia.

There has been a consistent uptake of people using this
facility in order to operate within the US itself either
in person or remotely. Some people, that I am aware of,
actually went from an Australian Foundation licence
accreditation through to a US Extra level and then applied
via the Australian Maritime College for an upgraded VK
licence using the Recognition of Prior Learning, (RPL)
procedure that was laid down at the time.

Suddenly this pathway was scuppered by the Australian
regulator making it necessary to sit a local assessment
to continue to use the amateur bands after 12 months. As I
said this was a treaty which gave the rights to reciprocal
licensing to people from each jurisdiction.

Last week, my copy of the WIA house magazine, Amateur Radio,
arrived and it was then that I read the 2 page spread of
Over to You, a letter to the editor by a correspondent who
provided documentation supporting his statements but who had
his personal details withheld from publication.

This letter is printed on pp 47 & 48 of the magazine and if
you haven¡¯t already read it, I would recommend you take some
time to go over it. The main gist of this letter is that the
procedures for RPL have been amended and no longer follow
the previously published criteria posted on the AMC web site.
The is now the possibility that a verbal exam or viva can be
conducted by an AMC assessor, either in person or over the
phone. The writer points out that this amounts to a form of
examination duplication which is obviously not the usual
procedure for a Registered Training Organisation (RTO). The
writer of the letter quotes correspondence from an ACMA
manager in June of this year in which the matter is
effectively duck shoved under the table.

One of the options floated by the ACMA was to have
assessments conducted by an RTO. Amateurs rejected that
choice and now we have a level of inconsistency being applied,
it seems, by both the ACMA and the AMC. A level of
inconsistency which stands the chance of destabilising the
stability of international relations established over decades
in managing amateur radio affairs.

I¡¯m Geoff Emery VK4ZPP and that¡¯s what I think, how about you?

The Sunshine Coast Amateur Radio Club is pleased to announce
the annual Sunfest event for 2021 will be held once again at
the Nambour Showgrounds this year.

Take pride in building your own gear? You could win some
awesome prizes by entering your work in the Sunfest 2021
Queensland Homebrew Competition. There will be both rookie
(licenced less than two years) and open divisions, and a
special category for U18s.

Perhaps your more of a car or truck lover with some radio on
the side, well why not enter the 2021 Sunfest Echinda
Concourse d'Elegance? We are looking for entries that showcase
the best of both worlds, neat cars and neat radio
installations. You will need to display your vehicle at the
event on the day, and be prepared to answer the odd question
or two. You never know, you could come away with the crowd
favourite award (grand champion)!

Along with our car boot sale space, we will also have a table
sales area as well this year. Fox hunts, and licence exams
are also being looked at, and there might even be
communication from another world on display as well.

Finally don¡¯t forget our MONSTER RAFFLE, we¡¯re looking at
offering some awesome prizes including a Yaesu FT-DX10.

Sunfest 2021 Field Day is being held on Monday the 4th of
October, @ Nambour Showgrounds, Queensland. Please note
unlike past years, due to venue availability, the event
will be held on Monday Oct 4, which happens to be a long
weekend not only in Queensland, but also NSW, ACT and
South Australia.

More info will be on our website ( vk4wis.org ) and
Facebook page soon.

-------------------------------------------------------------*

Hello, I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I¡¯ve been thinking.

During my studies, I was taught that language is a dynamic
and evolving thing. What we think of the rules of grammar
is largely irrelevant except for the style guides of news
bureaus and governments because what we have learned in our
childhood schooling will be surpassed by common usage before
we reach middle age. What we adults may have considered to
be slang of our juniors can quickly be entered into a
dictionary as a word of the year simply on its frequency of
use.

I also learned that it was a characteristic of words to
carry a common meaning like chair or radio or flying saucer
and there were those words and expressions which you would
not use in front of your mother. You had to learn which were
those words and how they were used largely by experience or
face the parental wrath. Many words have been co-opted to
convey another quite different meaning to the original use
such as the good feeling of being gay is now recognised as
a means of being homosexual.

This week, with the release of the latest issue of Amateur
Radio magazine there was a following apology for the
Editorial issued by the Board of then WIA. It took some time
for someone to actually post an image of the relevant pages
to Facebook as the PDF of the issue had been taken down from
the web site for amendments to be made.

The majority of WIA members have been awaiting delivery of
their paper copies in the mail.

I read the material posted by the Board and assumed that
some heinous comments had been contained in what is usually
an opinion piece from the current incumbent. When I read
over the copy posted I went searching for the potentially
offensive and or racist content. With only some seventy plus
years of using the English language version we have in
Australia I was unable to define where these terrible and
maybe affronting comments were.

I have asked for people to explain what was incorrect and
haven¡¯t yet been given an answer that relates to what I read
on the page. Of course, there are probably expressions in
current idiom of which I am not aware. Naturally there will
be political and ethical stances that people derive from
their education and background of which I am ignorant. But
surely amongst those who applauded the changes made on line
and who saw offence in the article, surely there was someone
with the clarity of thought and expression who could put in
plain language, not only for me but the other members who
are confused by this exercise, what was wrong and possibly
offensive or racist.

The reason that I have raised this is many clubs maintain
on-line presences and even produce newsletters and it seems
that probably the majority of those involved are closer to
maturity than youth. If within the structure of the WIA
there can be such unresolved confusion over the words that
we use every day how do we make sure everything is correct
in future?

It is not our intention to offend or alienate others within
amateur radio and it is our intention to be inclusive to all
who wish to take part. How do we stop mere words from
dividing us?

I¡¯m Geoff Emery VK4ZPP and that¡¯s what I think, how about you?
