Hello, I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I¡¯ve been thinking.

As the Friendly Contest, the annual Remembrance Day Contest,
comes to a close it is fitting to think about why we have a
special time to remember our members who lost their lives to
war.

Our country hallows the ANZAC Day services and follows rituals
that befit regular church services in their solemnity. We
stop and hold the minute¡¯s silence as a tribute to the fallen
from the time following the First World War and the red poppy
flower has spread from the fields of Flanders to be a
reminder to us all.

So many people made their first contact with the technology,
first known as wireless, whilst engaged in wartime pursuits.
With the necessity of invention, the foxhole radio
comprising a used razor blade a receiver or as we know it,
an earpiece, from a field telephone and a coil wound from
the copious wire strewn around the field of operations.

Like so many issues that we can face in life, the service in
uniform during war and other engagements has special emphasis
to those involved and to their close to them. Like the many
who have faced treatment for the viral disease COVID-19 the
experience of isolation from the usual support networks has
been immensely psychologically profound. For the many in the
healthcare industry who have been called on to treat these
people, the physical and emotional pressures have been
exceptional. For the families and friends of the ill and of
those involved in the health services, there has and remains
the constant concern as to whether they will see those people
alive, once more.

I don¡¯t want to equate the two issues but simply draw the
similarities to mind for us to reflect upon.

On days such as the Remembrance Day Contest, it is fitting
to think about those many people whom we have never met,
never shared their day to day lives but for whom we owe our
gratitude. For the many who have sacrificed their lives in
the endeavour of protecting our country, our home that we
call Australia, we can pause and silently remember them with
thanks. For those whom we meet along the way, we can never
know their experience but we may know their friendship and
for all of this we call this the friendly contest.

We can also remember that our fellows may also have the
haunting memories of the life they have had to lead and the
pain they can carry can also put them at risk. For me, I
reckon this is the time for us to recognise our fellow human
and when the hurt seems to show a little in the walk, the
talk or the tightening of the face, I reckon it is fair to
just simply ask, ¡°Are you OK, mate?¡± and be prepared to listen.
Some debts we can never repay but we can be there and for
the rest we can join in hoping for good band conditions,
some good contacts and great company.

All the best in the contest and this is VK4ZPP saying

-- and that¡¯s what I think, how about you?
