Merry Xmas from the Redcliffe and Districts Radio Club, Robert Thomson VK4TFN here. So, here we are again, eating and drinking and merry making. For you see: There is this fella Chris Krinkle, Whose eye has a bright merry twinkle. For merry mirth and good cheer, He spreads far and near, To all with a generous sprinkle. If you plan to drink don't drive and if you plan to drive well then don't drink. Like the lady says in the song: "Have yourself a Merry Little Xmas." Thank you and 73's, from the Redcliffe and Districts Radio Club. End of Text. Thanks and 73's and Merry Xmas RRT VK4TFN --------------------------------------------------------------------* Hello, I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I¡¯ve been thinking. It¡¯s not long to go now when youngsters will be seeking out what the boxes and socks and pillow cases might contain on Christmas morning. Hopefully we can all look forward to pleasant weather that memory records as being appropriate for the great summer holiday. The forecasts, such as they can be, that I have seen suggest it should be nice weather to celebrate in and let¡¯s hope that this is the way it will be. I wonder how many people have been sight seeing the visual overdose that people display with lights, music and animations on houses and yards. Even in my small area there are few clusters of led¡¯s blinking away to mark the Christmas season. My listening and operating, for a while, has been limited to VHF/UHF so I don¡¯t have any reason to complain about interference on short wave. Hopefully, as the years progress, more of the decorative trinkets will meet the EMC standards as the ubiquitous strings of cheap led¡¯s are discarded to landfill or stashed in some hobbyist's junk box for the time a certain coloured light is needed. I was tempted to start with a story of this week but I didn¡¯t know whether to say Santa came early or to suggest that we had a serendipitous win. One of the minor on going projects is to rig the household vehicle for operating mobile on something other than VHF or UHF. A small inventory of parts has been building up ready for the time we can at least pull off the road and call CQ or better still use the radio whilst actually driving. Now for what it is worth, the Terlin brand of antenna has quite a following in this country and to a lesser extent in the US and the UK. It has been on the potential list of purchases to get one of these famed Outbacker antennas. This day was sort of one of minor misery as the changed wind direction had carried some foreign matter which set of the wretched running and itching eyes, running nose and sneezes that are the hallmarks of a decent dose of hay fever. Needless to say I was probably behaving as if I had the ¡°man flu¡± as I attempted to quell annoying symptoms. I was looking through local ads on a social media sale site when what smacked me in the head like a cold mullet was an add for one of these elusive mobile antennas. A couple of hundred or more kilometres of driving and I arrived home with the precious item in its nice carry bag. Some time spent doing searches gave me more information on the model as the enclosed thermal photocopy page of instructions was so faded as to be useless. So now I can start a rethink on the mobile installation to include this Yuletide bargain. However, it is a bit like the old man in the red suit leaving entertaining gadgets and no batteries. A few years back I lost the base needed for mounting this glorious device when we moved house. So Santa, can you leave us an antenna base on Christmas morning, please? I¡¯m Geoff Emery wishing you all a very Merry Christmas from all at QNEWS. ------------------------------------------------------------* QNEWS SOCIALLY SPEAKING REDFEST will be held on Saturday the 9th April 2022.
