Re: QNI Reports
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýTom (et all), attached is a copy of the QMN net preamble and general net operating procedure(s). There is also a sample net report the NCS station needs to send to the early or late net manager. Finally, there is a list of common QNI with name and QTH. Revisions welcome! QNI Reports
?
Well, I started my foray into sub as an NCS and sweated it out. Thanks to everyone for your patience.?
?
But, I got to thinking, I bet I'm supposed to give a QNI Report to someone.?
I did a Late QNI and also, what all should go in the report. I've heard different reports given.?
?
Anyway, thanks for your help!

Re: QMN purpose
I run a flex 5000, and use the built-in keyer with a Bencher paddle. Need to get back in practice running it!

QMN purpose
At the annual picnic / meeting we all had an opportunity to state our view(s) of the purpose of QMN. There were almost as many answers as there were people attending the meeting! I did hear a pretty common theme that we all love CW and like to keep our skills proficient.
Tonight I was net control and noticed somewhat of a different tone or characteristic from one participant. It got me wondering what rig this person was running. I decided to ask everyone on the net what rig they are running. I'll share the results below. The side benefit, and arguably more important benefit of asking each person was that it gave everyone a chance to send a non-standard exchange. Many of us / you check in regularly to the net and send nothing much more than your call, GE, QRU, and later, 73. Sending is AS important, if not more important as receiving in handling traffic, because if you don't send proficiently and accurately, you run the risk of having the message recipient or message text misunderstood or received incorrectly. I am not proposing turning QMN into a rag chew net, our main purpose is traffic handling, but it certainly doesn't hurt to practice sending, with your "manual keying device" as opposed to using a computer keyboard. We can all send our calls (pretty much) flawlessly, but many of us need practice sending other text that's out of the ordinary. If any of the net control stations care to take part in this endeavor, AFTER the main net function is over and you're ready to excuse each station, perhaps ask them a simple question that can be answered in a quick response. Have fun with it, if you wish. Station - HF RIG KE8PAG - Elecraft KX-3 WB8R - Yaesu FT-950 WV0SS - Yaesu FT-450 WB8DTT - Yaesu FT-891 50 watts W8MK - Elecraft K3 I'm sorry I forgot to ask K8ED and KB8PGW. KB8PGW got plenty of opportunity to practice sending tonight with a BOOK of 6! Thanks, John. See you on QMN! Tom W8MK |
Re: Big Thanks to Larry WB8R
A Huge THANK YOU to Larry, WB8R, for hosting the QMN event in Coldwater and to Tom, W8MK, for leading the meeting.?
I know I'm the new kid on the block but the meeting was helpful and I appreciate the discussion about purpose and direction of QMN.?
I think the Purpose is important and for me I think we need people to know how to do NTS in the CW mode. It is important to pass it on to the next generation even if they are slow to embrace it. Let us not give it up!?
?
Meanwhile, it sounds like a big issue is the need to spread the workload around a bit. As soon as I figure out my schedule (which should settle a bit more in the coming month) I am more than willing to help.?
?
Again, thanks for having the get-together and for the chance to meet many of the QMN Net Team. I really do think you guys are awesome and I am amazed at your CW skills!?

Re: Big Thanks to Larry WB8R
Greetings to the QMN gang¡¡
?
Thanks to all who took the time and effort to travel to Coldwater yesterday for the annual QMN picnic. Our club (Branch County Amateur Radio Club) was absolutely delighted to be able to share a our facility with QMN.
?
The weatherman cooperated in his finest fashion and provided us with a great day for travel and a get together. Our club will look forward to hosting the 2025 QMN Picnic if the group would be interested in coming to Coldwater again. Our aeronautical inclined members found it easy to combine hobbies and to have our own little fly-in.
?
The one thing that we missed was to take group pictures. I apologize for that. I took a couple of pics which was looking down the main table where some of us were seated. Both shots were a discrete down the table shots, without any real details.
?
If anyone took additional pictures, please forward them to Tom.?We will not make that mistake next year as picture taking will be on the list of must-do items.?
?
Thank you all for making the effort to attend. It was a great time!
?
73,

Big Thanks to Larry WB8R
The annual QMN picnic and meeting was a huge success. Special thanks to Larry WB8R who secured the use of the Branch County Memorial airport terminal building for our meeting. The space was new, clean, large enough for our group, warm, and sunny. What a beautiful day to travel and be together.
Present at the meeting were - in no particular order: Larry WB8R, Jim WV0SS, Mike W8MAL, Jeff KN8CR, Mike WB8DTT (and XYL), Tom KE8PAG, John KB8PGW, Stan K8SB (and Ruth WB8AFO), Tom W8MK, John W8QZ (with co-pilot Tom N8DGD). We missed seeing regulars John K8LJG and Mark K8ED and hope they can make the journey next year. Of course, all are welcome and we'd love to reunite and/or meet you for the first time. I support holding the picnic / meeting in Coldwater again next year, unless there are any objections. The main take-away from the meeting is the need for volunteers for - net control stations for early and late nets - liaison stations to take traffic to and/or from the Eighth Region Net (8RN) or the Digital Traffic Network (DTN) - early session net manager Net control volunteers - contact Tom W8MK (early session) or Stan K8SB (late session) to coordinate which night(s) are best for you. I am looking for a volunteer for the Tuesday early net. Stan would really like a volunteer for the Wednesday late net. Eighth Region Net - contact Mark K8ED to coordinate which night(s) are best for you to go to 8RN early (7:45pm LT) or 8RN late (9:30pm LT) Digital Traffic Network (DTN) - contact John KB8PGW to coordinate which days are best for you to be the DTN rep. Contact John to learn how what equipment and software are required to connect to DTN Early session net manager - contact Tom W8MK if you are interested in receiving early net reports from the net control stations and updating the online (Google) tracking spreadsheet See you on QMN! The weatherman has a great forecast for QMN Picnic October 19 in Coldwater, MI
Good morning,
?
I just checked the weather forecast for southern Michigan on the 19th and we have an outstanding day in the offing¡.. 70 degrees and bright sunshine. What a good day for a fall drive. The trees are very colorful and the drive down should be a nice one.
?
For anyone that was on the fence about attending, the weather is not going to be a problem, so grab a sandwich and something to drink and set your GPS and head out for Coldwater.
?
Tom, W8MK and John, W8QZ are planning to fly in for the picnic, while the rest of us are earthbound.?
?
Again, the address is 351 Airport Drive on the west side of Coldwater and we will be monitoring the Branch County Amateur Radio Club¡®s UHF repeater on 443.300 with 123 Hz tone. This repeater has great coverage and is easily worked with a handheld. You can also contact me by phone at 517-617-4883.
?
See previous notes here on the Groups.io for more detailed directions.
?
Looking forward to seeing everyone on Saturday.

QMN Picnic Weather Forecast, et al
Good morning,
?
Today is Wednesday, October 16 and our annual QMN Picnic is scheduled for Saturday, October 19 at noon at the Branch County Memorial Airport Terminal on the west side of Coldwater. This facility is the home of the Branch County ARC and we are delighted to be able to show off our digs.
?
The address of the terminal building is 351 Airport Drive, Coldwater, 49036 and your GPS should bring you right to the door. Once you are at the terminal, you can enter the building under the covered entrance by the circle drive that serves as a drop off point for passengers or bulky items. You will see the QMN logo on the door. Come in and turn left (another QMN sign) down the hallway to the meeting room.
?
My cell phone number is 517-617-4883 and you can also reach me by radio on the 443.300 <Hz, 123 Hz tone repeater.
?
Please refer to previous communications concerning sandwich shops (if needed) on the east side of Coldwater in the vicinity of the US 12/I-69 interchange area.
?
We have two of our members who are pilots that are planning to fly in, so that will be an interesting twist for our picnic. Tom, W8MK and John, W8QZ are the pilots in our group.?
?
The weather forecast for Saturday (as of Wednesday) says 68 degrees and sunny. Planning anything in Michigan in October is iffy at best, but it appears that the weather gods may be smiling on us.
?
If the weather is suitable (temperature and wind conditions (airports are always windy..) there are a couple of picnic tables outside that we can use. We have folding tables and chairs that can augment the outdoor seating/eating areas if needed. If it is cold or too windy out, there is lots of room inside.
?
This location for the picnic is new to the QMN family. If it works out, I see no reason why we could not make this ¡°ours¡± for the foreseeable future, assuming that the membership agrees that the location is suitable.
?
See you Saturday @ noon¡¡. And travel safely!
