? RUSS, Radio Under Sun Shade - Also Known as "Radio in the Park" - RITP ?

Back again for the fall and winter, beginning on.....

Saturday, January 8th, 10 AM till 2 PM (1000 to 1400)

Great weather! Perfect for another Radio in the Park or Radio Under Sun Shade event!

Here are the RUSS event dates for all of 2022:

1/08, 2/05, 3/12, 4/09, 10/08, 11/19

You will find below a brief description of the event's objective and activities:

*What is it?* *Here's the recipe:*

- take several ham radio stations and antenna systems
- add portable power - generators, batteries, solar power
- add some experienced hams
- include an open invitation to new hams, experienced hams, and anyone else
- publish a valley wide talk-in frequency of 146.460 MHz (PL of 77 Hz); if operating HF, 7.178 MHz LSB
- We also try to monitor 446.000 MHz as a back up frequency to 146.460 MHz.
- replicate this recipe several times over in the Valley at the same time

*What is the objective?*
- Engage in as many contacts as possible across the Valley using a VHF simplex frequency of 146.460 MHz or HF frequency of 7.178 MHz LSB while operating off grid power, If possible.

*What is the result?*
- An excellent opportunity to learn about ham radio and ham radio operators.
- A great opportunity to learn about the type of equipment available - portable, mobile, base radios, antennas, coax, cables, solar arrays, solar controllers, and more.
- A great opportunity to learn about the importance of basic emergency radio principles.
- An opportunity to actually use the radio equipment and speak to local hams and distant hams hundreds or thousands of miles away -- even if you are not a ham!

It is a hands-on learning experience that is unequaled. We have had many of these events over the last 12 years and every one of them has been a tremendous success.

The hosts of these events have one key objective - to relate the fun, facts, and usefulness of ham radio while exercising emergency communications via simplex and off-grid power.

*Where and When? (Mesa, Phoenix, and Queen Creek Usually)* - More locations are possible and, if they are confirmed, an update notice will be sent out.

The event will run from 10 AM (10:00) till 2 PM (14:00).

[HAMserveAZ] AEN-MAR: FRS/GMRS Radios in the Park - ONE MORE DAY TO SIGN UP

Public service events (marathons, bike races, walkathons¡) have been called ¡°disasters by appointment¡±.? But some hams complain that those appointments are too darn early.

Next Saturday, our appointment is at 10am¡ real convenient.? We plan to hold a simulated public service event, complete with rest stops, simulated runners, and all the issues you expect in a large event.? Of course, we¡¯ll exercise our FRS/GMRS radios to keep in touch with our non-ham contacts, too.? And we will be done by lunch, so even more convenient!

Not only convenient, it¡¯ll be fun and educational!? Even if you¡¯re an old pro at this, you¡¯ll help others learn.

You only have one more day to sign up and get a roleplay assignment.? I¡¯m designing the exercise to match those who sign up.? I won¡¯t have any roles for ¡°walk-ins¡±.? Sorry.

Sign-ups close tomorrow at noon.

Drop me an email today if you¡¯re ready to get out of the house on a pretty Saturday (mid!) morning and exercise your public service radio skills with friends.

Cc: Andrew Cornwall <NetManager@...>

Ham radio, schmam radio.? There are other radio services besides ham.? Cool!? Let¡¯s exercise how to use those during public service events!

The Arizona Emergency Net ¨C Maricopa meets on Monday nights.? But some topics just need hands-on exercise to master the material.? So, on some months, we¡¯ll conduct hands-on, practical training on a Saturday morning.? We¡¯ll share the same park as the RUSS (Radios Under Sun Shade) hams.

Next Saturday, if we have enough turnout, we¡¯ll simulate a half marathon public service event in the park.? And we¡¯ll use FRS radios to keep in touch with our rest stop captains, the race director, and other non-hams.? That¡¯s when FRS radios really shine!? Let¡¯s see what works and what doesn¡¯t.

So, next Saturday, 8 Jan, bring all your FRS/GMRS blister-pack radios and your ham dual-band HT to the exercise site in the East Valley, location to be announced.

Don¡¯t have a dual-band HT?? I have an assignment for you!? Come anyway.? You¡¯ll enjoy it.

If you don¡¯t have FRS/GMRS radios, come anyway.? We¡¯ll have extra radios you can borrow.? Then you can decide whether to get some of your own.

We¡¯ll finish our Saturday exercise by lunch time.? And we just might find a lunch spot to go to together, optional.

And then two weeks later, we¡¯ll review what we learned on the Monday night net with everyone who couldn¡¯t attend.

PREPARATION:

1.????? Clear your calendar for next Saturday, 8 Jan, 10am to about noon.

2.????? Let me know you¡¯re coming.? E-mail me at Mike.J.Pulley@... BY THURSDAY NOON.?
I¡¯ll get some information from you, tell you how to prepare, and tell you where the park is.

3.????? Find your FRS/GMRS radios.? Make sure they have fresh batteries.? Bring at least 2, if you have them.?
Bring more, if you can; someone might need to borrow a pair.

4.????? Find the user¡¯s manual for your FRS/GMRS radios.? If you can¡¯t find it, print one off the web.? (Always bring the manual for your radios in the field.)

Let¡¯s meet in the park, exercise with radios we don¡¯t normally use, and just maybe learn something.? Oh yeah, and let¡¯s have fun!

Who will join me?

Who is Jean Shepherd?

Who is Jean Shepherd?

Jean Parker Shepherd, Jr. (July 26, 1921 ¨C October 16, 1999) was an American storyteller, radio and TV personality, writer and actor. He was often referred to by the nickname Shep. With a career that spanned decades, Shepherd is known to modern audiences for the film "A Christmas Story" (1983), which he narrated and co-scripted, based on his own semi-autobiographical stories.
Born in 1921 on the south side of Chicago, Illinois, Shepherd briefly lived in East Chicago, Indiana, and was raised in Hammond, Indiana, where he graduated from Hammond High School in 1939.[2] The movie, "A Christmas Story" is loosely based on his days growing up in Hammond's southeast side neighborhood of Hessville. As a youth, he worked briefly as a mail carrier in a steel mill and earned his Amateur radio license (W9QWN) at age 16, sometimes claiming he was even younger. He sporadically attended Indiana University, but never graduated. Shepherd was a lifelong Chicago White Sox fan.
During World War II, he served stateside in the U.S. Army Signal Corps. Shepherd then had an extensive career in a variety of media.
Shepherd maintained his interest in amateur radio throughout his life. After leaving Hammond, he obtained the call signs W4QWN (Kentucky), W8QWN (Ohio), and W3STE (Pennsylvania). Upon his arrival at WOR in New York in 1955, he obtained the call K2ORS, with which he was often heard speaking to other ham radio operators for the remainder of his life.
